Occasionally there are hard-working successful rock groups from New Jersey who are able to become an overnight success and have the opportunity to jam with rock royalty like The Beach Boys, The Eagles, and The Blues Brothers. The Stanky Brown Group was all of the above except for the overnight success part which seemed to elude them. This song is clear evidence of their talent.

The first song I ever recorded for a record label and one of my all time favorite bands...:) The beginning of my 40 year career,,Thank you guys and thank you John Scher...

Thanks for putting this together. I worked for the band for several years, first on the road crew, and then as road manager. They were certainly a terrific band and deserving of more success than they had. It was a fun time though.

YES!!! I had that K-Tel Stars LP on 8-track. It was my favorite album and this was one of my favorite tracks on it. Thanks!

I saw these guys with 38 Special and the Outlaws at the Music Hall in Houston. Stanky Brown was excellent. 38 Special and the Outlaws were awesome too but the Stank set the bar very nicely. Impressive.

Man, I was in a group in college in 1980-82 that covered a number of SBG songs (probably the only time SBG could be heard in Texas); this is so great to hear again. I'm reaching for my old HS Anderson Moderne to play along -- Thanks so much, Chuck!

I still have the vinyl "If The Lights Don't Get You The Helots Will" from the 70's with this on it.

You did! It's your own amazing work. I just arranged it visually in what I hope is a pleasing manner for all. The first record my 6-year old sister bought was the K-tel album, "Stars", which featured a track by this unknown group that I was sure was hot but our local radio station did not play any of their songs. Of course it was "Coal Town"! We played the heck out of that record until it was too scratched up to play anymore. Thanks for being a part of my childhood and keep on rockin'!

Exactly how I first heard this song. My parents had the K-tel Stars album in the 70s. Love this tune.

I bought the K-Tel "Stars" album as well, in the summer of 1978, age 14. I had never heard this song before but liked it a lot. (That album was also the first time for me to hear War's "The World is a Ghetto.") It is fun to hear this again 44 years later--thank you!

@@peterruark645 Me too! The K-Tel “Stars” album was Amy introduction to this song. In fact, I’m busy restoring some old vinyl of mine, and just cleaned this album. It is a great song.

Thanks for putting this together. It's a terrific little tune. I originally heard Coal Town on an old like Ronco collection and eventually picked up the cassette. Good job on the video.

You're welcome. It's actually on the K-Tel collection entitled "Stars." A copy of the album cover is seen in the video.

+chuckcollins I have this album too, otherwise I would not know who this band was. Like the song, but I think perhaps their success was limited by their "funky" name?
