My goal in life is to become a famous actor or comedian somehow and win an award, an Oscar or Emmy or something, JUST so that when I go up to the stage, accept the award, grip it to my chest with tears in my eyes, and give Princess Leia's "....this is the promise of the tree of life" speech with a look of 100% absolute sincerity on my face. If I can do that, my life would be complete. I would be able to die with no regrets.
When I was a kid, I had the rare privilege of being allowed to stay up past 8 to watch this. And for the first time, after being hyped up for almost a month waiting for it to come on. It put me to sleep.
As bad as this special is, Bea Arthur was the only person who walked away with this tripe with her dignity intact. She was just great and the only actor who was even trying here.

My sis and I actually asked Peter Mayhew, the original Chewbacca if he voiced every wookie in the holiday special. Not only did he know what we were talking about, the answer was yes. HE VOICED EVERY SINGLE WOOKIE IN THE SPECIAL!!
+what? Would we really want to waste the 13th bonus holiday special episode on something that everyone and their Fat Grandma has already done? The last thing we want is for MST3K to become just another internet-style reviewer, or worse, just another rifftrax, which really defeats the purpose of bringing MST3K back to life.
I was 16 when this aired and I watched it. I had seen the movie 3 times and this had the words STAR WARS in it, so, of course, it was going to be awesome. It was the apogee of 70's cheese and, at 16, I was old enough to feel embarrassed for the performers.
Trivia: the rat prop from Food of the Gods was going to be in the original Star Wars cantina scene, along with a giant mantis marionette and several other creatures, but they decided to leave them out. Because of the original film's budget, a lot of the Cantina costumes were from other films or from the 20th century Fox warehouse (hence the werewolf, grey alien, and devil)

I gotta wonder how the people who wanted to watch Wonder Woman and The Incredible Hulk felt when they got stuck with this. Also, out of all the reviews of The Star Wars Holiday Special, this is definitely one of them.
The only redeeming qualities of the Star Wars Holiday Special were: (1) the animated cartoon featuring Boba Fett, (2) the cantina sequence with Bea Arthur as bar hostess and her song.
I love this special. Don't get me wrong, I understand every bit of hate it gets but it makes me laugh and it has a weirdly cosy family feeling to it so I can't bring myself to hate it.
That Darth Vader scene Brad called stock footage is DEFINITELY stock footage since the imperial guy beside him, Chief Bast, was in A New Hope, and 100% died on the Death Star.
Yeah. They did what Gareth Edwards did to put Gold Leader and Red Leader in Rogue One, but it was decades earlier and makes zero sense whatsoever. I dunno, maybe "Bast" is a Clawdite spy pretending to be him.
I saw this when it aired that one time (yes, I am old... GAH!!!). I was a kid then, and it scarred me for life. I can tell you that something can be so bad that even an 9-year-old was embarrassed to watch in in the presence of others. And you must remember, while changing the channel could have been an option, this was when most of the country had only 3 networks and PBS to choose from. Sigh. I think we were all stunned by how bad it was, we were too incapacitated to do anything about it, though.
Paul Gale who played Itchy also played Hoodoo in the Krofft Roadshows. Malla was played by Mickey Morton who played Solomon Grundy in the Legends of the Superheroes tv special. He also does an unmasked appearance in the bar as the bar closed. The Droids cartoon of Boba Fett continued to wear the grayish outfit instead of the greenish one used in the film. Oddly Grace Slick didn't appear in the "Set the Night on Fire" song, but does the voice over for the Bea Arthur bar segment. I do like this special better than the movies.
The reason Mark Hammill's makeup is terribly heavy in this special because they're trying to cover up his plastic surgery scars from the car crash he was in right before Star Wars was first released. It's the same reason he's got scars in Empire Strikes Back, and why they added the scene at the beginning of that movie of him being attacked by the yeti. If you pay attention to his face between Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back you can tell the difference. Poor guy, must have been a bad crash if the change to his face from plastic surgery was that drastic.
Uhmmmm... It is a testament to modern filmmaking for me to honestly say, yes, this is indeed the best Holiday special Brad has covered imo. Kirk Cameron made George Lucas look good.

I.....I don't know what to say. This is very exciting, to meet someone who witnessed this famous atrocity *when it happened!* Did Lucas say anything about the special at the time? Do you remember other people talking about its awfulness, and thinking it would fade from the public's memory?
Lizzy Chrome Lol... don't get too excited. Most of what I witnessed that day has long since faded from my memory until I watched this video. I hadn't seen it since. I DO remember, even at such a young age, that what I had watched was profoundly disappointing. And I also remember telling my schoolmates the next day who hadn't seen it how "weird and boring" it was. Don't forget, VHS players were still a few years away. GL never addressed it at the time. Blame it on the seventies. Look at the old Adam West "Batman" series, *everybody* in Hollywood was doing handstands in mountains of cocaine at the time.

I can only imagine a pissed off Wonder Woman and/or The Incredible Hulk fan from the Seventies not only angry that they wouldn't be able to watch their favorite show that night, but that it was postponed for The Star Wars Holiday Special of all specials. Sadly a lot of people prefer this to TLJ to which I say at least TLJ has some really good stuff the twists and turns, Yoda, that fight with Rei and Kylo and Holdo lightspeeding the ship what does this have that could possibly top that?

Whenever I see a review of this special, they always mock Luke's look. Mark Hamill got into a bad car accident after filming A New Hope. In fact, the whole reason for the Wampa scene in Empire was to explain some facial scaring from the accident.
For those of you have not heard, Carrie Fisher, the one who did Princess Lea in the "Star Wars" films as well as this garbage has died today at 60 due to a heart attack. RIP: Carrie Fisher 😭

Only ever saw this thanks to rifftrax. It's damn near unwatchable at 2 hours in length without someone making jokes at it and you're talking to a guy who suffered through dozens of bad star wars novels.

It's just... my eyes glazed over. I suddenly realized several minutes had passed and I had removed every cat hair from the sofa. After that I did the dishes and came back and didn't bother rewinding.
I actually think the Thanksgiving proximity makes sense, when you consider that, like Christmas, the holiday is very similar in how families come together for it. Odd that those holidays are so close together.
