I know the overwhelmed feeling of having a house house ahead of you and having loads of blocks and boards waiting on you. There were times that I looked around as I was putting up the walls and thought, "what have I gotten myself into?" It's an awesome feeling when the roof goes on.

If I were building that, I'd put some rock in the crawlspace, cover it with 2" of foam and pour a rat slab over it. Then I'd insulate the walls and seal the vents. Make it part of your conditioned envelope. The house will be more comfortable.

100% Agree. Construction in Northern Idaho is different than what is being built in Seattle/Redmond. I understand that you can't really have a monolithic foundation due to the clay and thus a crawl space is necessary. But a heated crawlspace is far better than an unheated one. A crawl space that is open to the elements means *cold floors* in the winter, *unwanted critters* (mice, rats,, ground squirrels, snakes, etc. get in under the footers to get out of the freezing winter weather), and *dampness and mold*. It needs to be ventilated into by a heating duct and then exhausted back into the house through a return vent. Oh by the way did you see access to the crawl space?

That ending got me teary eyed. My first wife was like a love you only dream of. We were both goal oriented and grew a successful business and had a beautiful son together. Before she passed she told me to forget about our successes but to remember the journey we had together because that was our true success. When I met my current wife she was so different. But she said something to me that hit home and felt she was hand picked for me. She told me she does not care about where we go in life as long as we can enjoy the journey. Within our first year of marriage i gave up 60% of my company and complete control. Created a little wood shop where I spend maybe 20 hrs a week in and create stupid things like barn doors or tables or picnic tables and then sell on Facebook for stupid money. But its all fun. It is the journey with my family that gives me purpose. I always wanted a home I created with my own 2 hands and a small shop where I mill my own wood and create whatever and my family is pushing me to do this. I am pretty sure i have found the land and am so excited to jump in. It gives me such great joy to see your family because it reminds me of mine. Where we all dream and we all do what we can to make the journey to those dreams as uplifting and memorable as possible.i look forward to your videos and your daughters because your family is on this great journey and loving every moment of it.

Monolithic foundations don't work well on glacier clay. It swells when it the water content of the ground changes. But I agree 100% they will wish they had a dry crawl space - no cold floors, no nasty unwated critters, and damp and moldy basement. Drainage is a really big deal.

When your new home is completed, your children will be able to say “I did that, or I helped mom and dad build this part”. How do you put a price on that? Their involvement will anchor them to this home forever, no matter where life takes them individually. The future you are building will be built upon a foundation of love and respect. How incredibly refreshing it is to see a young family doing things the right way. You give me hope that there are still decent, kind people still out there.

Idk John...I watch a couple of other "husband & wife" off grid channels... And this channel just comes off as overly scripted/unnatural. Granted, I've only watched a few episodes the past few months, but they're pretty consistently the same to me. They seem like a "Wonderful Wild" knockoff to be honest. Besides, these videos are edited... You think they are going to put the fights/arguments in the videos? Lol

I met my love 3 months ago, although I did not believe in it already. I feel exactly the same as this couple - love and respect next to my beloved. Anything is possible John, the very first thing, start with yourself. I wish you good luck, find your beloved, give and receive love.

I’m curious guys, are you going to bring in some help for the framing and roof? Once that floor goes down, the weather will be your worst enemy, so I was just wondering if you were getting some help to get it dried in ASAP?
@ShadyOaksFarm

Looks like they are using advantech for the floor sheathing. It can more than handle the bad weather. That’s what it’s made for. Being outside in the climate until you are dried in.

Also you can use Thompson’s water seal on the floor and band boards once they are in. Spray them using a garden sprayer and soak them good. I’ve done this before and works well.

In the future, if using foam sill sealer, place a bead of acoustic caulk on the foundation outside the bolts. Then place the foam, then another bead of caulk inside of the bolts. The "Z" method of sealing out air and bugs. Use acoustic sealant, it doesn't get hard and will move with the structure. - OR - Cover that foundation to plate joint with tape or fluid applied. You may need to prime that concrete to get tape to stick. Keep up the good work.

Tim Tams in America are distributed by Pepperidge Farms, which was actually bought by Arnotts (Australian manufacturer of Tim Tams). Apart from World Market and Target, sometimes they are also available at other smaller supermarkets. Unfortunately there are many more flavor options in Australia - good for us Aussies - but sad for you Yanks, and the pandemic has really slowed shipping.

Probably looks like a mansion to UKers. We have 3200 including basement & addition. 1-1/3 acre with large pond & basketball court. When my uncle came from UK, he said it reminded him of the show Dallas. But here it is just a modest suburban home.

It’s so bloody expensive sending stuff to the US from Australia, just sent a pack of caramilk eggs and 5 packets of Tim tams to a friend in Kentucky and the Tim tams and eggs cos $15 AUD and postage cost me $50!

@@kerrymandry262 The extra costs are charged by the US as they're apparently charging some hefty fees to import anything into the States so Austpost passes it on to us :(
