He is & will always be The BEST! Jerry Lewis! Soo smart that he’d work tirelessly on one 45 sec scene that is fall down funny. He knew it & allowed a few seconds for laughter before going into the next! Comic Genius falls short in explaining his mind. He was brilliant in everything he wanted to do. My favorite entertainer... EVER!
Truthfears Guilty I always wondered why he fell short here. He was ridiculously hilarious in his 60’s movies, but this one hardly any laughs, just plain stupid. But at least not boring.
Found it!!! After all these years of remembering this part of the movie. I would ask others and they either didn't know what I was taking about or didn't remember. Thank you for posting it, childhood memories.
Jerry Lewis reprises his previous movie persona, this time as Warren Nefron, a man unable to successfully kill himself, while Herb Edelman is Dr. Jonas Pletchick, the psychiatrist out to cure him of his failure, in this Jerry's signature ,absolutely hilarious slapstick comedy. It's so clear to see how he influence modern comedian Jim Carrey it's uncanny . Many of Lewis' past routines crop up again through the device of flashbacks, as he sits in the doctor's office and remembers vignettes from his past. It was only released theatrically overseas under its original title, Smorgasboard. The film was released in France. As usual, the French love his humor and flocked to see this film when it was first released. It's a bizarre, nearly avant-garde exercise in stringing together gags and, then of course, pushing those gags to surreal excess. I found the 'Smorgasbord' to be extremely hilarious and really showcase Jerry's brilliance as a writer and comedic actor. Some of the best scenes were ; Jerry witnesses a bank robbery. The head crook (also played by Jerry) notices the bank's security cameras. The criminals become obsessed with the security cameras and perform an elaborate dance routine in front of them. The police arrive and join the dance. Another hilarious scene his shrink tells Lewis "He's playing with half deck"; "He doesn't have both oars in the water";"You've made too many Swan dives into empty pools"! Smorgasbord the last feature film written and directed by Jerry Lewis turns out to be one of his best comedic films .
Miss him doing the telethon...he was there at start all way to end awake every moment part of it ...don't care what people now say of his personal life he was dedicated to those kids and cause
+retrocomedyfan19 Yeah, and where he say's he came zooming through like a land to air missile, and of course ramming into his car to get his attention and stopping him! lol
Dan Simmons hey I had one! Loved it until my mother-in-law made me sell it. "My daughter's not goina get killed it that bucket", so I've regretted loosing it ever since
my brother had one of those, many years ago...it had only 3 cylinders...and it didn't like going up hills at all........ kind of a gutless wonder, if ya know what I mean...I don't remember the MPG...but it must have been really good....
I love how no one mentions that he totally STOLE this from Jackie Gleason’s Sheriff character in “Smokey and the Bandit”. The voice of the driver was also Jerry Lewis. Ha.
Well, that's a matter of opinion. Each great comic was or is great in their own way (Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, the Marx Brothers, Berle, Gleason, Lewis, Brooks, Carrey, etc).
1983 was only 8 years ago tops and Jerry was so young in this movie , only 57 but somehow 1983 according to this calculator was 41 years ago , maybe it needs batteries
And Jerry Lewis' career re-surged in the 1980's. Have you not heard of the King Of Comedy, directed by Martin Scorscese? He was in that film, and garnered praise even from his critics and non-fans. He appeared in films and television sitcoms even into the 90's. He is now directing The Nutty Professor musical that will soon be on Broadway. So much for saying his career died. He stopped making films during the 70's, because they became trashier and immoral. He made films for the family.
