THE STATUES
by Charles Bryant
Imaged against the evening sky they stand,
tall, mute, irreconcilable: black forms
upon a rose-washed drift. What setting sun,
what failing art threw up these postured shapes,
its last blind symbols touched with statured pride?
And when that heart had ceased and darkness fell,
what savage mind was haunted by these stones?

Wonderful! I love that word-play on "statured", and the questions. I am strangely reminded of the last two lines of Yeats's 'The Second Coming', but also, somehow, of Frankenstein...
