I very much liked the contents of the letter Boden wrote about Paul Morphy, I thought that it was entirely brilliant, and further shows that even one hundred and fifty years ago people spoke in an unbelievably articulate manner. How remarkable Boden must have been as a man to be so gracious in a defeat as such.

@kirbyculp3449
@kirbyculp3449 4 года назад
As a comment for Morphy's time, that can be ironic. However, in our time that is straightforward. What I mean is that what I have read of the elite players of today is that they do not memorise the winning games, they analyze the losing moves and avoid that line. And we non-professionals cannot analyze an a series of positions for hours or days. Also, not everyone can calculate to depth 31 in twelve minutes or less.

You could analyse games, play games, talk about the future of chess, talk about life as a chess master, life outside of chess,... It must be remembered that by the time Morphy came along, Staunton was no longer well enough or possibly fit enough for chess tournaments or matches. He had suffered from heart problems as early as 1843. By the time Morphy arrived in England his health problems had been made worse by the work he had put in to edit an edition of Shakespeare and so was probably a shell of the player he was in the 1840s

I got both moves. What's interesting was that I got them at a glance, however the more I thought about it I doubted myself. I swear to god I'd love to watch you cover historical events.
