A killer cover of a great Skynyrd song. In their own way, The Steel Woods touched upon all of the elements of that song that made Skynyrd special. I saw The Steel Woods at 8 Seconds Saloon in Indy a few years ago. The place was packed with a bunch of line dancers who seemed to be paying little attention to them. They played this song in the middle of their set and I got goosebumps. I've never heard it covered. It was a great and moving rendition. I'm sixty years old and grew up listening to this kind of music. I asked my date if she recognized the song and got a blank stare. The crowd was oblivious, my date was oblivious, What the hell do people listen to??? The whole crowd had a great band in front of them and did nothing. I left that place mystified.
My all time favorite song by Skynyrd. Glad that Steel Woods plays it. Not too many like the song that I love. The opening guitar riff is what gets me. So sorry for your loss...
Been jamming to this groove for the last couple years. Liked the original. Fucking LOVED this version. Has been my favorite song and is listened to repeatedly. Didn't have any idea Rowdy passed. I'm broken. Why do the brightest flames burn quickest? Unfair. Jeezus, we're fighting with family over red this and blue that...Life is too damned short people. Don't waste it. Embrace your kin. Your neighbors. Those that are different than yourselves. Enjoy life. Share music like this. It'll outlive ALL OF US!
Just when I am counting my blessings this evening of discovering this band...the good Lord sends me the beautiful voice of Ashley too, now I will be looking out more from her as well. What a fabulous track this is and one day I hope to be sitting in a bar drinking a nice drink and watching this band play live. Thank you so much for sharing with us, so very much appreciated. All stay safe. X 👍😎👏👋🌈
Just found The Steel Woods the other day. Awesome stuff! Covering on of my favourite Skynyrd tunes phenomenal. The lovely Ashley Monroe is like wow a coffee flavoured icing on top. If Ashley is new to you check her out with Rickey Skaggs on a Raconteurs song called old enough.
You have to really be a die hard Skynyrd fan to be familiar with it, they do a wonderful job here, but the voice (really, the presence), the longing soulful Female sound... That brings it all back together. Fantastic.
You guys are just what America needs right now...just a good ole american rock band with some good vibes to keep people smiling. I wanna hold up my drink to ya and salute u. Keep rockin.
Damn!! How has this band not made it big yet??? I give them a yr and they are going to explode on the country music scene!! Love love love their sound!!
Dam you guys make me feel like a teenager driving a Pickup to High School in central Florida in the late 80’s and back then I would be listening to 38 Special, today I am listening to you all!
the first song i heard from these guys and they are f'n awesome and i don't even listen to country......well i guess i do now. cause i like all the songs they have i'm catching them live for sure
Awesome I’m really amazed at how talented you all are and it was more of a pleasure to ride and drive with you all in person on the bus. Thanks and more blessings to you all from Mr. Walt Bell⭐️
WOW just WOW!!! Those duel harmonized leads in the last couple minutes of that song are just mental gymnastics! It’s hard enough to bend the exact same not at the exact same time as the other guitarist, but these boys are doing complete scales of harmony parts with many bends thrown in. That is mastered through endless hours of practicing and rehearsal. And no matter the genre be it country, southern rock, or even metal it’s something only those southern boys have!!! If you’re not a guitar player it’s virtually impossible to explain to that person the level of musicianship that is applied in those parts!!!! Also having Ashley Monroe doing guest vocals beautiful stroke of genius!! Well done Steel Woods y’all got it ol’ sons!!!
How precious your bow, how truthful and humble inside you are for all to see. Music in the moment for all to see with eyes closed is nothing compared to making that moment for someone. How respectful you honestly are only a few can see. Music can be so innocent that it is transparent in feelings, how it makes us like children.
Can not wait for the 2022 tour with Blackberry Smoke! It will be the ultimate Southern Rock Tour since true southern rock ended remarked by the passing of Ronnie VanZant and when Danny Joe Brown left Molly Hatchet. Atleast the original purist movement! They’re have been some ok bands along the way but either novelty acts or older bands just doing the whole legacy act thing. Right now is a great time of revival that’s been gaining speed since the early 2,000’s with bands such as Blackberry Smoke, Jamey Johnson, Steel Woods, Allman Betts Band, Whiskey Myers, Anything Warren Haynes does hahaha, Tedeschi Trucks band, Skynyrd still kickn it, Ruby the Hatchet, Mount Carmel, Dixie Witch, Black Cowgirl, Backwoods Payback, Shooter Jennings, Lucero, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Black Crowes are back playing again, plus a ton of really good honky tonk and outlaw style country bands that could easily tour with any of these bands! Whitey Morgan & the 78’s, J.P. Harris and the Tough Choices, Nikki Lane, Colter Wall, Margo Price, Dwight Yoakam, Marty Stuart, HankIII, Reid Donner Band, just to name a few! The most important thing about the artist I listed is that it’s not parody of the genre and they are trying be ironic. These dude work construction in the day then hop in a van with the fellas and head to a show still wearing their Wranglers, pearl snap plaids, white tshirts, and engineer boots that they have been wearing all day to work in. It’s truely a way of life for them. Which is all very important because lovers of country music (all styles) can spot a generic fake from a mile away. If their is a group who wont be taken advantage of its blue collar country music fans. Because “Did you know for $500 you can get your head blown off, it will”. They will not stand for the parody and irony that pokes fun of their beloved culture no ifs ands or buts about it!!! But now I shall digress!!! Fly High Freebird!!! R.I.P. Ronnie VanZant, Steve Gaines, Danny Joe Brown, Allen Collins, Billy Powell, Leon Russell, Tom Petty, Duane Allman, Barry Oakley, Greg Allman, Dusty Hill, Ed King, Rowdy, Hank Williams Sr., Earnest Tubb, The Carter Family, Keith Whitley, Bill Monroe, Graham Parsons, and many many more of our brothers and sisters of this working class culture and art!!!!!!!!!! Keep On Keep’n On, Life’s a garden DIG IT!
Great cover!!. Thanx a lot guys & Miss Ashley Monroe for sharing this gift. Greetings from The Basque Country!! Please visit us as soon as the sun will come out again... KEEP YOU SAFE. The best wishes for you and everybody here!!
Dave Gordon I’m in NE AR.We traced our roots about 350 years to the east coast of NC.I suspect the original old John Gordon was on the run from the law in Scotland. My sister found our Scottish crest. At the very least,we both have great taste in music 😊
As "F"'d up as 2020 has been I think I'll remember it with a weird sense of fondness...........the world slowed down and we got performances like this on youtube.
You go man! You men are together like them. I've heard you guys cover this 3 time. Your on the top. Best cover of this song. I live in Nashville. Plus your originals are dope. There are a lot of men with fenders. But try to play like that.
