I just turned 58 today and have been a music lover my entire life. Over the years I have accumulated over 5,000 albums spanning nearly every genre imaginable. This performance of this song will forever be at least tied as my favorite of all time. I wish Tom would have been around to hear it as I'm sure he would have dug it. Thanks to the boys and Amanda for making this. I will listen to this one until the day I die.
Amanda Shires' fiddle brings something truly special, not to mention crying eerily touch! SHE IS VERY VERY GOOD!!! (dont know what she sees in Isbell though, lol! He is a good songwriter, very good) So I just make myself keep politics out of it. Hard to do sometimes when it's some1 as radical as he is....oh WELL ENJOY brc
Listening to this beautiful sound brings calm to a world gone mad. What Mr. Tom Petty wrote is typical of the musical genius that he is and will always be as far as I’m concerned. BlackBerry Smoke picked it up and did something magical with it as well. Their own genius combined with a beautiful invited guest, Amanda Shires, doing an equally mind blowing job on her violin is sheer poetry. Thank you all for entertaining all of us. Peace, love and music to all!
Whoever said Tom fans wouldn't LOVE this is a dumbass. I saw him 1st time in 1980 and probably 25 other times 4 with Dylan. Since he's gone I think he would've loved hhis There a difference between people who play music and people who FEEL music dipshit0
Blackberry Smoke Best Damn Band on Earth RIGHT NOW HANDS DOWN! REAL MUSICIANS PLAYING REAL MUSIC, Charlie's voice is legend! Awesome! GREAT TRIBUTE TO TOM!
well... Whiskey Meyers is up there as well. As of today 8/23/19 they released two songs from their new album set to be available in September 2019 and I am NOT at all impressed by what I've heard so far. Today is the first day I am seriously giving Blackberry Smoke a listen to and so far I have to say they are damned good!
The Love of my life played this song in his truck the first day we spent together...I instantly fell in Love with it while I was falling deeply in Love with him. He left me a few weeks ago and through every second of every day I miss him and ache deep within my heart and Soul. I WAS SO LUCKY. Life will never be the same without him.💔 Hold Your Loved one's close people. I'll never stop Loving You Chad, You were my everything and I would've married You. I truly hope You find happiness and peace in Your life though, You deserve that. I will never, ever forget You and Us though...You gave me some of the most precious memories I'll ever have. 💗
FINALLY I FOUND A BAND A REAL BAND who plays Southern rock!!! From Now to On i am a Huge fan of BLACKBERRY SMOKE. My Song and the first one i've heard was One Horse Town and describes my life and that of my father in the fields and mountains. Love Blackberry Some and Thanks for wrote a song like that....I miss Pa.
I'm almost embarrassed to say this I'm 65 years old and grew up listening to some of the best damn southern rock ever produced. Blackberry Smoke thanks
❤ What could possibly be embarrassing about that? Be proud 🎉 I'm 63 and music has never been better than the Southern rock that came out of the '70's.. Thanks to Blackberry Smoke for bringing it to a newer generation and listening audience.
@sharonyates3106 Agreed, I still listen to Southern Rock at 76, quite a bit thanks to RU-vid. Especially love the Dual guitar leads on those bands that featured them.
I've seen Blackberry Smoke on several occasions indoors and out and they never disappoint. They always bring it. People don't realize they are not "new" and that they have been at this for twenty years. Charlie Star is a huge talent. If you get a chance to catch theses guys take your best friends and plan on making a memory or two with some good Ole boys and some great music
I'm a huge fan of Amanda's work when she collabs. She always adds so much. This song for instance. Who would have thought Petty could get better? Who would have thought Blackberry Smoke could get better.
Once I was 7 years old, in 1972. I lost my mother to kidney disease and adopted by an aunt. A time when we played outside till it got dark with local children or amused yourself the best way you could before the earliest computers/consoles like Binatone or a woody Atari (just before Acorn Electron & Sinclair). Great times, uncomplicated times of friendship and fun. Great times too as it wasn't dominated/influenced/recorded by or for social media. Have a great day.
Watched these guys over 10yrs ago. A local band to me(Isolated Atoms) supported them on their tour of Britain, and I have been hooked ever since. Brilliant band. I would love to have the chance to see them live again.
Jesus! I could not hold back the teardrops appearing in my eyes meanwhile I was listening to this one in my car. So beautiful it made my hair stand. Tom Petty may you rest in peace. Blackberry Smoke will save rock and roll!
Oh my 😍 The slowed down, country take on this sounds great and the violin is just beautiful. I'm a big Tom Petty fan and you really did him justice. This is a fantastic cover!
There is so much genius in this version of this song. The fact that this is one take is monumental. It’s very rare to have something like this and I’m glad that this version of this song exists.
@@williemaupin7267 they are AWESOME in concert!! I seen them at ROCKLAHOMA Last year and there are no words to explain just how KICKASS they really are! HELL YEAH!!
Isn't that the truth. I love it. ...it's great dance song during they don't sing. It's like im flying. 😂. I find peace. that violin kicks it up. She plays beautiful ❤️❤️
IMO this is by far the best cover ive ever heard.Pretty sure Tom Petty would love this.I mustve played this tune 100 times in the 3 weeks ive heard of BBS.The band has brought this tune to an absolute higher lever, if that was possible.
Recently discovered Amanda, love her music. The violin and guitar at the end gave me chills. So perfect. I can assure you that Tom is smiling down on them 😅
I gotta believe that this is the perfect tribute to Tom Petty. I am moved to tears by the haunting violin and that makes it even more touching. A beautiful and moving tribute to a wonderful musician RIP Tom Petty and a wonderful performance by everyone!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
To my estranged husband of 31years. Happy 29th wedding anniversary, 30 + years together . 4/18/1993-6/10/2021. I listened to the words of this awesome song of Tom Petty's today & damn if it wasn't perfect. Blackberry Smoke, you guys are amazing artists & the Amanda Shires did a beautiful job in your duo. God bless you all!
Damn, his voice is just so perfect for this song, as it is with every BBS song, or anyone for that matter, but this one especially he has the tone and control which is just so right.
Man when I first heard this version, it brought tears to my eyes. Tom Petty meant so much to so many people and this song stirred up that emptiness of him being gone. But Lord knows he’ll never be forgotten. The Smoke covering this and adding the fiddle was absolutely fandamtastic !!! This version rolls through my playlist often, and I even play it on a loop. RIP Tom !!!
@@stevelewis1982 what I know of Miss Shires is she is generous with her time to local charities, she is a talented musician and kicked ass with these Georgia boys. I defended this country for 20 years, but am sure Miss Shires cares as little about my political opinion as I do hers. See I defended, with my husband and brother YOUR right to disagree. God bless!
I love these guys, there really aren't a lot of musicians capable of doing such a great job with a cover and from my perspective its a great example of just how much talent all of guys have!!!
I don't know how many times I have listened to this song, but every time I feel the same emotion that I felt the first one! It is simply gorgeous !!! Your music is simply beautiful. Every time I listen to you, the notes of your melodies touch the strings of my heart. Thanks Blackberry Smoke !!!!
This is really, really good. Charlie's voice fits this song perfectly and Amanda adds her violin and voice and you have a slice of heaven. Tom's songs are timeless and i would think he would be pleased with this version. Wow!
Tom petty!!.. .great tribute to one of the greatest bands ever lived.....rest in peace my brother!!....I don't understand why people dislike great bands such as BlackBerry smoke.....listen!!! all there is keeping Tom petty,s music and memories alive!!....
What a beautiful and a brilliant rendition , it just elevates the original , beautiful vocals built with pathos, lovely strumming and super cello , in word word, Brilliant!!
Damn! You guys 🎸🎤🎹🎻🎶❤ the sound, the harmonies, the violin and the melodie, just made my hair stand! I really really hope I'll get the chance to see you sometime ❤ Rock on - and keep safe on the road!

This is one of THE Most Beautiful Cover tunes I've ever heard! The Violin just made the song better!! She's amazing! Blackberry Smoke ALWAYS makes My Day!! What a Wonderful Tribute. Charlie...You're the Best!
My brother is obsessed with Blackberry Smoke. Thank-you little brother for introducing them to me. I am a die hard Petty fan and yalls version of "You Got Lucky" is so haunting and beautiful.
I just heard this last night ..bumper music on a radio station talk show...come across Blackberry Smoke years ago...true artists. Does bring tears .. bittersweet memories and realities of whats real and important..and only the lucky get:)❤
Just bought 4 CDs of them this week. One of them had this song on it, still need to get the Whipporwill CD that has One Horse Town on it. Love their music, there so humble..
Nice! I've been a longtime fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ever since Damn the Torpedoes blew up FM radio and this is the first time in all of those years that I heard a cover of one of their songs that I actually enjoyed listening to.just as much. In the past, I never found a cover that came close. Beautiful work.
Walk Off the Earth did a nice tribute to Tom, too. Your comment echoes my experience. Since I was 12 (back in 79), I have loved Tom and his music. My heart broke last year as my fear I would never see/hear him live came true ... I just couldn't afford the high ticket price when he came through Cincinnati only months before his passing. That day was filled with so much sadness and though the Vegas madness overtook the media, my personal sense of loss over Tom leaving was really so deep and profound, I just slipped into a tender place within. I lost my wax years ago (when I was 36), but had all my Heartbreakers albums until then. I remember the inner sleeve having a photo of Tom in mirrored aviators and how I would display that sleeve while spinning the disc, thinking he was the absolute epitome of cool. I wrote poetry for many years and knew the agony of searching for the "just right" words and I admired how Tom wrote, the words he chose ... Man, I miss him ... And to lose two of my huge musical loves to opioids infuriates me still. (Prince being the other one. I grew up in the Twin Cities and was blessed to see him on his Purple Rain tour.) I honestly don't blame either of them -- I suffer with severe chronic pain and have been prescribed opioids to relieve it -- no, I instead think that more effective treatments for pain could be found if greed wasn't such a huge factor ... But I digress. Tom was an absolute treasure and I am so thankful and grateful for RU-vid and all the uploads of his music and interviews, etc. I watched the documentary and at the end of it, started it again. Haha ! Seriously, I felt like I had spent 4 hours with a best friend and didn't want to say goodbye. If you have never seen footage of his friendship with Garry Shandling, I recommend it. He was a real honest and true friend. And ........ whew. I ALMOST didn't listen to this but I love BlackBerry Smoke so much, I thought I would chance it. Maybe it is because Tom is gone now, maybe the slower tempo, I don't know for sure -- all I know is we were all lucky when we found Tom. His music is firmly embedded in the soundtrack of my life and the friendships he had with the Heartbreakers were truly inspiring. The totality of EVERYTHING they faced together and came out the other side of is nothing short of beautiful. Friendship and love. It doesn't get much better, does it ? Namaste
I sure do miss the 70s, 80s and 90s. The music🎺 today is not even the same. Sometimes I wish I could find a time machine and go back in time. Life was much easier and everyone enjoyed life! Is this your favorite song?
@@edwardcarter3023 YOU JUST JOINED RU-vid 20 MINUTES AGO! DON'T YOU DARE DISGRACE BBS WITH YOUR BULLSHIT! YOU THINK THEY HAVE TIME TO ANSWER SHIT ON HERE? GO GET A JOB, OR TELL THE COPS ABOUT THE DEAD PEOPLE IN YOUR BASEMENT. DON'T F WITH ME. PERIOD.
I’ve watched/listened to this more than 10 times and just noticed that Amanda’s fiddle has 5 strings. That’s how she sounds like a viola sometimes and she uses that low C string on this tune to good effect.
Amanda Shires makes that fiddle cry, or actually, whatever she wants it to do. Kinda sad she married to Jason Isbell, lol, as talented as he is.....SMDH
