I would love to see an analysis of why this race is always decided in the last climb of the Muur de Huy. One would imagine that having all those climbs and almost no respite there is plenty of space to do a winning move way before, because captains and domestiques definitely get tired, and yet it never happens

I'd like to call attention to Pogacar between 2:36 to 2:50 in this video. He gets boxed in and drops way back, losing distance and momentum, putting a lot of riders in front of him on a narrow road, it's understandable he never recovered. Bad mistake, but he'll learn from it. Pogacar wins it next year, you heard here first.

His team set him up perfectly, except that he wasn't in there wheels. Woods is always out of position at the bottom of Huy and then makes up 20-30 positions to end up in the top 6. Problem is most of all his own. He isn't good at positioning. They actually had a train with Fugl in 2nd wheel and Woods in Fugl his wheel somewhere within 2km to go and 1 shot later Woods is no longer in Fugl his wheel...

For me teuns is not a supprising winner ! in the tour the france theuns managed to win a stage from pogacar. Theuns came up on the top with 9 sec before pogacar and he crossed the finnishline 1 minit before pogacar. Do you remember it ? and in other races theuns was second or third place wat means he just not won that race. Theuns wins almost every year a stage in the tour the france. And always a mounten stage. He is a far underrated rider. So for people with knowledge of cycling it was no supprise theuns won this race. and we will see him back in the tour ;-).

Watching that last climb it looks like a few of these guys are not really at their best at this point in the season. Pogacar specifically at 430 decelerates and riders have to go around him. That's not the same rider who wins the mountain top stages at TDF. And, he was not the only one. Give it to Teuns though. He had the legs at the end today.

So I notice there's this shoulder/elbow movement to call for the rider behind to take front, why would some riders refuse to help each other out? Is it just pure selfishness of wanting the wheel of an opponent? Or not having the energy to push on?

I believe the quickstep guy was just marking the attack but knew it wouldn't go anywhere and his job was to get Alaphilippe to win, so he had no gain in helping another rider in a weak breakaway that wasn't gonna win anything
@molybdnum
@molybdnum 2 года назад
It's all tactics, and why exactly changes depending on the situation (plus it can always be a bluff). In this case the Qstep rider is playing a defensive role for his leader and team, not trying to win for himself. His job is to make sure his team has a rider in this breakaway group just in case it gets dangerous, but not to actively contribute to anything that would make it harder for the Qstep leader for this race (ala) to be in a winnable position at the end.

@robotomassi2011
@robotomassi2011 2 года назад
Oh please. He finished 7 seconds behind Teuns. This is a one-day race. The Tour is 3 weeks long. The Mur De Huy is a very steep and short climb, compared to the 10km climbs of lesser gradients they tackle in the Tour, where UAE's mountain domestiques will really assist him and his ability to recover will come into play. Also, the Tour also has time trials, which Pogacar excels at when compared to other GC/yellow jersey candidates. There is even a 40 km time trial towards the end which is on the long side compared to general TT length which will mean pure climbers and puncheurs will lose loads of time. He will be Top 3, barring a crash or illness and I'd put money on him to win if the odds weren't so short.
