Crossing off the Steepest Mile! Finally! The Wildcat Ridge Trail in New Hampshire has a one mile section that rises I believe about 1,800 ft in elevation gain in just one mile! 2,000 ft in 1.5! Making it the actual legit steepest mile on the AT. Located around the location of one of the most popular Ski Resorts in NH. Loved this hike - getting to cross off Wildcat ‘A’ and ‘D’ summits and walking down the ski slopes was a treat!
Definitely a very difficult trek, not much exposure just a lot of level 2 scrambling.
Highly recommend this route!
Safety first in any season, friendly reminder to be wearing proper hiking attire, have your ten essentials and bring plenty of food and water! Hydration is much more difficult to maintain on longer more strenuous hikes, especially in the summer months. Bring multiple sources of navigation and back up batteries for your devices.. - my recommendation. Hike safe! 💗

Very cool. You crushed that. Made the steepest section of the Appalachian trail look easy. Crazy how Mt Washington doesn’t look as big from that summit.

No joke. I've hiked this a couple of times and that is a brutal stretch... even though I love it.

Thank you so much!! I try to work on my dialog everytime I’m out. Sometimes it’s hard to hike and talk, and think lol. Everything is non scripted in my videos.

@@AmandaDouin I live pretty close to Carrabassett Valley and spend a lot of time there and the Rangeley area. I enjoy your videos!

Omg the Bigelows are my favorite!! You’re lucky to live there! It’s a couple hours drive for me :) I want to do a Bigelow traverse to help prep for a Presi traverse :) I feel like that would be a perfect way to prepare.

@@AmandaDouin Rt 27 in Carrabassett to Rangeley is a hard yank too. Lots of ups and downs. Lots of loose rocks on the back side of the Crockers. I usually hike with my dogs and they wear me out especially since I’m nearing 50. Stay young my friend!

The steepest mile on a hiking trail I have ever encountered was on the south side of Doubletop Mountain in Baxter State park. I did it as a day hike. I could not imagine ascending it with a full pack.

I have yet to explore that area but hope to see it this year! I bet it’s spectacular!! I’ve been toting around a 40liter pack to try and continue to build my leg muscles lol. I like suffering. (Plus it has a really good hip belt)

The elevation gain is 900 feet in the last 1/3 of a mile on Doubletop Mountain. Just a little steeper on average than the Wildcat Ridge Trail.

@@spectrum10 Def steeper. Is it a level 3 scramble or something? Dang. Yeah the Wildcat Ridge Trail is just the steepest section of the Appalachian Trail. There are def some doozies out here in New England.

@@AmandaDouin Here's some information I got from a.i.: As for the rating systems, scrambles in North America are graded on the Yosemite Decimal System, ranging from Class 1 (Easy Hiking) to Class 5 (Rock Climbing)2. The grades are based mainly on two factors: how difficult the moves are, and what the consequences will be if you fall. I don't know if Doubletop Mountain in Maine has been rated as a scramble

That bit of trail is the one time my hiking buddy and i looked at each other, and said, "That was incredibly stupid and dangerous. " (It was partially covered in snow and ice. ) We've always chosen the toughest trails up every mountain, but that one climb stands out as the most dangerous.

Glad you guys made it out unscathed! Icy rock is no joke! Steep icy rock is even worse. 😬 Thanks for checking out my video 💗

@@AmandaDouin yeah it's not that bad on it's own. I think it's rep comes from being part of the AT, as thru-hikers would have just dealt with the northern presidentials and now have to go back up with a heavy pack.
