I went to see Tumbleweed play in North bridge, Perth and they finished with Tears me in two. One of my favourite bands playing my favourite song. I was in heaven.

The Psych rock scene only hit the US in around 2010 with bands like Black Angels and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Shows you how far ahead of the curve Aussie surf bands were

Really cool Aussie bands. You're right. But there were bands of this kind all over the "western" world in the mid80's. Check the Tell Tale Hearts, Chesterfield Kings, Prisoners, Chocolate Factory, Wylde Mammoths, Lyres, early Bangles to name but a few.

There were so many garage psych bands in America in the 80s doing this sort of thing as well

To me, this is one of the best songs to ever come out of Oz. I spent much of my misspent youth seeing The Stems play. They fucking rocked! Dom Mariani is a god! : )

@@sejrec56 Richard is playing Keys and singing, he died in the middle of 2020 of a heartt attack, only 54/55 years old, he really was a very good and decent person, he was straight ( as they all were) as an arrow. I was the original Bass Player, one of the reasons I quit/ they asked me to leave( always at least 3 sides to every story) was my partying habits were getting a bit much,, for them. He, Richard was one lucky fellow, Dom, who wrote and sang most of the songs had been playing in Perth for 6 or 7 years and I'd been playing for 5, he was 26, and I was 23 when The Stems began, Richard was 18, our/his first gig ( except for one country warm up show) was in a Hall with a crowd of 800, in Support of The Saints and The Triffids, 2 years previously I played a gig half a dozen doors away to no more than 6 or 7 people, Dom would've done likewise, Richard was one of the few players I've met who never played to empty rooms, Cheers

Richard committed suicide in May at the start of covid 2020. He was the keyboardist and singer/ writer of this song. Look out for his daughter, Penny Lane.

The bass and organ riff is legendary! I first heard this song in 1997 when it was covered by Brisbane all-girl garage rock band The Genies at The Orient Hotel. Lead singer Vickie Watson is now in a very promising rock trio Some Jerks.

The only song that might pip this in the genre is "Just Ain't Enough", and the Stems did that one too! Utterly brilliant, and doesn't get anywhere near the love it deserves. It's like they were personal "buds".

"Tears Me in Two" borrows from "No Friend of Mine" (1967) by the Sparkles but I don't hold that against the Stems.

Oz indie classic..up there with My Pal and Julie is Junkie. I heard the nostalgia tour line up that gigs occasionally don't play it 'cause the organ player's not involved/fell out with them. If i went to a Stems gig and they didn't play this I'd demand my money back.
