Rick - no kidding, a collection of interviews like these would be an indispensable document of music history, worthy of the Library of Congress (not hyperbole!) Hearing what Mr. Jordan has to say is a great example, not quite like any other interview. (And it was fun!) No one can do it quite like you, with your deep background and connections to so many greats. Please, more!

Ringo played like he loved and believed in the music. Just try and play a Beatles song with a drummer that doesn't respect Ringo, it won't feel right. Even if they're good or adding to the song, you can't rebuild a Beatles song without understanding the blueprint.
@kkjhn41
@kkjhn41 3 года назад
One of the things that made Ringo great is the way he came up playing drums. Playing to live audiences in situations where people came to party, to dance and have fun. Where the greatest satisfaction for a drummer is taking a room full of people and make them dance their asses off and you can see them having a great time and tell yourself that was me, I did that. Instant validation of what you are trying to do. And it's harsh the other way as well. If you can't cut it they will let you know right away. It's all those hours and hours in hot, sweaty noisy clubs learning to connect with people on an emotional level that's worth so much more than the same amount of hours spent on things like RU-vid video lessons that make you sound exactly like everyone else and put your focus on yourself and make you forget why you're playing in the first place. If you don't love that time on stage making people feel more than anything else you do then that will be reflected in your playing and not in a good way.

So it is me who made it backstage at "Lightning in a Bottle" Production and recording. I am walking around pretending to look like I belong there. I was meeting so many of my childhood hero's and having the time of my life. The task was to make sure Steve did not see me because the whole thing was a Set even backstage. Knowing if I was noticed I would be thrown back out into the audience and I did not have a seat assigned or should have because I snuck in. The guards thought I was someone so I walked right in. Long story short, at the end of a whole day and evening were all leaving and there he is, walking right toward me. I looked away and he said "So, did you have a good time?" I said "Yes this was outstanding, great Job" He smiled and said "I know you are not supposed to be here Right? I was like, yeah but thank you for not kicking me out. He said "I would have done the same thing". That is my Steve Jordon story and I will never forget him for that. Lightning in a Bottle is a very cool project, I highly suggest you all watch it.

It's so funny that he mentions how you can see all these people in NYC. I was there on business (from Tokyo) and I went over to Sam Ash when I had some spare time. They had a poster up announcing that the Robert Cray Band would be performing in the store later, so I came back. Part way through the show, who walks in but Steve Jordan, who grabbed some bongos or something and sat in. So cool. (More than a decade before on another business trip there I ended up playing beach volleyball against John Stossel in Central Park.) NYC!

Incredible interview. One of my favorites that you've ever done. Of course, I'm a drummer! I actually met Steve Jordan one time when I made a delivery of some recording equipment to his apartment in New York City. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to talk, other than just me being a delivery guy but he was very nice. I don't feel comfortable bugging famous people. I've always been a big fan. It was really amazing to hear him acknowledge Grady Tate at the end there. My mom was in the Air Force in the 1950s and she was stationed with Grady Tate in Texas. They were friends and she told him he should check out a guy named Cal Tjader. Apparently he really loved what he heard and he told her that, someday he would play with Cal, which he eventually did. I like to think that my mom was responsible for that! I didn't move to New York City until I was 30 and I missed a lot of that great time that he was talking about- being able to meet all those amazing drummers in town. I still did meet some great people over the years, like Ali Jackson- who's phenomenal (!) and Steve Ferrone & Kenny Aronoff. I was also lucky enough to do a tour where I crossed paths with a guy named Victor Indrizzo, who is an incredible Studio drummer these days. It goes on and on. New York City is just an amazing place for music. I was waiting to hear what Steve had to say about Narada Michael Walden but there was not enough time and too many people to mention. I also wondered what he thought about Richard Bailey who played with Jeff Beck on Blow by Blow when he was just a kid. Anyway, another time. Thanks for the amazing interview! Peace & Love ❤

55:19 "but it´s different when you´re in fact affected by them in person". I can tell. I had the chance to work on stage the last time Steve played here in Buenos Aires with John Mayer, Oct. 29 2017. I spent the whole day chating with Artie Smith, his drum tech, the sweetest guy you can imagine, and by showtime I stayed just 2 meters away from Steve playing his main drumset (there were 2). It´s just a so deep and moving feeling, it´s so hard to explain for me, mostly because my english is kinda limited. This guy is such a living legend! Story tells that in the middle of the set, suddenly, a tornado took over the field (Palermo Hippodrome) and in a eye blink everybody was on the run, so I missed my chance to say "Hello and thanks" to him. But I know it will be another one and I´ll be ready. Thanks Rick for this!

I just love these and I laugh out loud constantly. So many subjects are touched on that nobody else is talking about…it’s exorcising. I played a Steve Jordan Jazz event with my band mate Rhiannon Giddens once and Steve asked me if I would join him on bass for a couple of tunes. I didn’t know what we were gonna play but I also knew that I didn’t have to, it would be effortlessly communicated through music and, I was right, it was effortless. You can pick up most of what you need to know from a great drummer you just need to play attention and pick your spots to communicate back. Such a pleasure.

One of America's greatest failings of the youth is the demise of physical education and school music programs. When everyone knows the benefits of both and still they refuse to fund either . IMO that's why music has dumbed down in musicianship and what is popular . And Steve is astounding as a drummer and producer, a man that has been able to do both to a level of perfection rarely achieved.

I'm sad that my kids don't have the music program that I had growing up. Our public schools leave a lot to be desired (not because of the teachers, my wife is a school teacher) but because of the district and the idiots on the board. We send ours to a private school (while we're able) and there's not music program. There's a "band" so they try, and there is a chorus, but no large band ensembles. My kids do take private lessons for piano and violin, and they have recitals, but it's not the same. My closest friendships were made in the band and music programs. The under/de- funding of music programs is truly sad and highlights the lack of intellect in elected officials, indicating that as well in those who choose these clowns.

Great interview! Glad I watch the whole video. I love making music, playing piano and guitar because it makes me feel good. Turned 60 this year & will rock out til the arthritis in my hands makes all movement impossible to tolerate or exit this earth for good. I relate to what was discussed on using the different plug-ins etc. I feel like the tech available to mix & produce our own songs takes time away from just playing the music. I never created 17 tracks for any song but I used effects that at the time I thought made my songs sound so cool. I can now say that I hadn't a clue what I was doing. I uploaded my recordings and music videos thinking I was "THE WOMAN". I keep many of the earlier videos uploaded onto my RU-vid channel as a reminder how far I've progressed in just the last 10 years. Viewing them now can be an humiliating experience but I choose to look at it as a learning experience . I learned that I don't want to be that solo artist who can't give a live audience the same quality music they heard online or on a CD. I was classically trained on piano by a Julliard Graduate. I taught myself to play guitar. I don't like my vocals and I don't practice much to stay on pitch. No amount of tech producing software will make me a great musician. I must do the work. Talent is great but it must be nurtured and skills honed or else you lose the gift. I am a lifetime student and strive to be a better musician regardless how far I progress. I play because I want and need to. I don't need fame to continue making music. I do it for my soul and mental health. My friends and audiences tell me I have a good voice but it's my ability to reach their hearts with my music and performance that they like. Honest emotions, no bells or Laptop software filling in the empty spaces. Raw and soulful. I miss interacting with local musicians & playing at Open Mic Nights like I did years ago. I stay home a lot because my immune system is compromised by a genetic disorder-Common Variable Immune-deficiency. I don't make healthy B cells and depend on monthly Infusions from blood proteins of healthy people in order to make antibodies to fight viruses. Since COVID-19 shut everything down I am more isolated living alone & less contact with the outside world. Your videos are inspirational and I enjoy your teachings, life stories and down to earth interviews. Yesterday I put you on the list of featured channels on my YT channel. Do you teach music virtually by live stream?

Wow!! Pure wisdom. And that “partial” list of his influences is as close to a compendium of the greatest drummers of the last century and their specific contribution that I’ve ever heard in a single interview. Looks like I’ve got some serious exploring + rediscovering to do for the next three decades 🤪🤣 ✨🤘💖

I really appreciated his comment about the Internet of seeing bands live in the club. The physical presence of how the music performance feels is a huge part of musicianship. Like, the way McCoy Tyner makes us feel in person is as much a part of his musicianship as everything he’s doing with the keyboard. Brilliant conversation. Thank you.

I'm not hip on most of the drummers Steve mentions as favorites. Can't wait to explore and dig into them. Absolutely love discovering "new" old musicians.
