Iconic album, hugely influential. John Squire, Mani & Reni were fantastic musicians. This was the closing track on the album - that Wikipedia article you were reading from explains the meaning of the lyrics. Squire is one of the greatest guitarists of his generation. Check out his band The Seahorses who enjoyed success after the Roses broke up. 'Blinded By The Sun' and 'Love Is The Law' are definitely worth a listen.

For a million and one reasons, 1989 was the most memorable year of my life. And that was the year the Roses came into my life. Where I lived these guys were truly underground. "Fool's Gold" ruled the dance floor and the clubs and college radio were the only places where you'd hear them. When a few years later Britpop exploded I was underwhelmed. These guys had done all that stuff already way better years before. The one thing about this band that I never stopped wondering about was whether or not they would have been the biggest band in the world if they had a better vocalist. Not magnitudes better, just someone competent at singing like Liam Gallagher. I say that because the three instrumentalists in the band were superlative. Alan Wren (Reni) was a superb drummer and Gary Mounfield (Mani) was a wonderful bassist. John Squire was a prodigiously talented guitarist. In my opinion, second only in talent (maybe) and influence to Johnny Marr among post 1980 guitarists. That whole instrumental second section in this song was recorded in ONE take. Ian Brown could scarcely keep himself in tune. Ever.
@robh7680
@robh7680 6 месяцев назад
He sounded good on record and suited their sound (at least on the first album), playing live he was hit and miss, I think his voice wasn't very powerful and when he tried to sing loud he went out of tune. But the real reason they lost their way wasn't his voice. After the first album they needed to go straight back in the studio and get the second one done, but they took it too easy - too much money, too many drugs, then they were restricted by their record deal which they struggled to get out of, family stuff got in the way, then they drifted apart. The second album has it's moments but by then they'd lost momentum and were pretty dysfunctional and only Squire was actually producing any songs, and they ended up with only half a great album. But they were never going to be one of those bands that went on for decades.
@Davehatessocialists
@Davehatessocialists 3 месяца назад
I hear what ur saying, can't quite imagine another voice taking Brown's place tho. It's definitely part of the flavour. But saying that, 35 yrs of familiarity has probably ingrained it in there beyond question. I was only 13 when this came out, it'd be like changing the colour of the sky. Absolutely he's not the objectively best vocalist tho. Talk about right place at the right time...jammy sod.

@@antonytheolddog8626 He didn’t, he’s repeatedly correctly stated the Beatles are the best band ever. The Stone Roses is a better album than any Oasis album but the latter had more longevity and released far more good songs. Don’t forget the Second Coming was a flop, despite a couple of good tracks. Growing up the roses , they changed the face of music. They brought fashion, swagger and attitude, ian brown the singer is a legend over here in england, in the early 90's every indie band wanted to be the next stone roses. Liam gallagher once said if there was no stone roses there would never have been oasis. Not forgetting the drugs and raves that went hand in hand with this madchester movement. Probably one of the best albums of the eighties and nineties, if not of all time. The guitar solo / jam at the end of I am the Resurrection - is probably one of the best ever also. I think you were kind with your assessment of the what the song was about - because in truth, The Stone Roses were very arrogant individuals, with heaps of attitude - and tbh I think Ian Brown did actually think he was the Messiah at times. I mean - they called their second album "Second Coming" - so that's a bit of a clue.
