I LOVE The Stones of Blood, it’s such an interesting concept with a fantastic guest cast. Professor Rumford is an absolute gem, and she work with Tom Baker so well. She’s also definitely a queer icon. David Fisher was such an underrated writer. For another really good queercoded relationship I’d recommend The Masque of Mandragora, the actors who played Guiliano and Marco are actually on board with this reading as far as I’m aware.

Just a little point (for the engagement): locations for the stone circle were filmed at the Rollright Stones in Oxfordshire (which doesn't have a bank and ditch earthwork so isn't a henge monument). Extra stones, including the Ogri, were added by the production team, including cross-beams to create trilithon shapes similar to Stonehenge.

It's insane how between this and The Seed of Doom Tom Baker has impeccable chemistry with elderly actresses. Also, noticed a bit of Anthony Reed erasure there 😢, he was the script editor, Admas took over in the very last scene of the season finale

Douglas Adams wasn't script editor until next season, with this season being edited by Anthony Read. The jokes are very much in the vein of David Fisher, who wrote the story. Adams and Fisher shared a similar sense of humour, but as I say the former went nowhere near this script.

True but a lot of this (especially the courtroom scenes) are so Adams it hurts. I can easily see why someone might assume Adams had polished this script.

What a Matryoshka doll of a story! Its 4 parts all manage to be distinct (moors, mansion, twist with the professor's assistant, then finally the trial) *and* it's already inside a season-long story arc. The scene where the camping couple get killed by a rock would be the pre-titles sequences these days, instead of randomly inserted into the middle of the adventure.

Middle of the road one for me overall. Fun, and I love the gothic atmosphere early on, reminds me of the Hinchcliffe era of the 4th Doctor, my favorite time for any Doctor Who, ever. It's about 3rd for me in the key series, behind Pirate Planet and Ribos.

Rewatched this recently and loved it more than I remembered. I think it’s a terrific little tale that keeps the pace really well. Also some terrific goofy ness and atmosphere blended together. Just love the story and the review :)

Favourite of the season. Ribos may be expertly structured, funny, brilliantly written, but this one has Amelia Rumford.

One of the great joys of this story for me is seeing Tom Baker being bemused, amused, and then rising to the challenge of acting with Beatrix Lehmann, who has a personality as big and luminous as his own.

As with so many other things-including this whole season-saw on original transmission.My fave of the season.LOVE the elderly Prof (it was the actress last role I think)...a similar role to the old lady in "Seeds of death" a few years earlier ie eccentric,but we'll educated.The stones weren't as big or scary as I originally remembered...still the death of the 2 campers🎩

Love this story! And it's not just you. I'm a straight, cis, GenX, woman who first watched this episode in the early 1980s, and I have always read Prof Rumford as a lesbian. Even before I really understood what it meant, I saw her as a "confirmed spinster" (assuming that is the female equivalent of a confirmed batchelor).

It's interesting that you should review a story which starts out as a gothic folk horror before suddenly completely changing into something different, a week after 73 Yards aired.

I'm enjoying the double-dose of Key to Time from the media I consume right now. You're covering it in short reviews, and the Doctor Who podcast "Watchers in the 4th Dimension" is covering it in their hour-ish long episodes. I waited on watching this video until today, since today is when their episode on Stones of Blood dropped, so I could have both together. It's a lot of fun for me! And yes, Amelia is definitely queer-coded in my book. Positive stealth queer rep!

I like to think Vivien and Prof. Rumford met, when the latter was about 40, and Amelia just never questioned that her partner never aged.

This is a real favourite of mine. I didn’t see it at the time, my best friend explained the plot. Not very accurately it turned out. He was terrified by the tent bit. If you want to see something similarly themed and absolutely bizarre from the same British tv era: Children Of The Stones

this was my favorite story of the entire 6 chapters to the Key of Time.... ******* SPOILERS *************** Vivian LeFay was the villain.....a space ship parked above a stone henge, it was phased into a pocket dimension (similar to the ship in "The Black Spot")....Three of the stones were ALIEN living rocks from another world and they ate blood.....and the 3rd segment....and when the showed Vivian LeFay in her true form....the silvery skin and that dress....she was gorgeous

I am SHOCKED you got nearly to end of the review without mentioning the lesbian subtext (which is so blatant it is actually TEXT!) Why didn't you pick up on the line Vivien gives to Romana about riding a BIKE being "a whole new experience for you". Let alone the innuendo around "sausage sandwiches" and the Doctor implies that Vivian was Violet Trefusis (Vita Sackville-West’s lover), during the 1920s and and, well, there’s that police truncheon incident. And the justice machines who are every bit n old married couple. At the end of the story, Romana kisses Amelia, who seems overwhelmed by the gesture. Need i go on?

IIRC a behind the scenes book I read during the 90s, this episode was filmed at Stone Henge. A school trip was visiting at the time, and the students were tasked with counting the stones while the show wasn't filming. The teacher was very confused when they all got the wrong number due to the fibreglass stones that were at the site due to the production according to the book. And, yeah, Professor Rumsford is definitely into women. She's one of the various characters who people usually cite for queer characters in classic Who.
@FoggyD

Sorry, but either you're remembering wrong or that book lied to you. Outside shots in this story were filmed in Oxfordshire. The real Stonehenge is in Wiltshire and doesn't look *quite* like the stone circle seen here, as Vera noted.

The best thing to do when approaching this era is probably to pick and choose stories that look interesting to you. Tom Baker’s run is 178 episodes long, so going chronologically might be a challenge. I’d leave season 18 until last, it’s my favourite of his seasons, but it is very thematically rich and probably lands better if you’ve seen Tom Baker and Lalla Ward in season 17 first. Season 16 is the only one you have to watch in chronological order, along with the E-Space trilogy in season 18. My recommendations are: The Ark in Space Genesis of the Daleks Terror of the Zygons Pyramids of Mars The Hand of Fear The Face of Evil Horror of Fang Rock The Sun Makers The Stones of Blood The Androids of Tara City of Death Full Circle State of Decay Warriors’ Gate

@@nekusakura6748 I enjoy The Robots of Death, but I’m not sure it’s the best place to start with the Fourth Doctor. I’ve never been fond of The Deadly Assassin, I can’t get much of anything out of it. I know that’s sacrilege but I’d put it in my bottom quarter of Tom Baker’s stories. It’s one of the few popular stories that I actively dislike.
@nekusakura6748
@nekusakura6748 2 месяца назад
@nocturne8333 I'll argue at least that the Scene where The 4th Doctor explains how the TARDIS is bigger on the inside than outside in The Robots of Death is essential viewing for Doctor Who newcomers. It might also be Bias since Robots of Death was my first 4th Doctor Serial. While I do understand Deadly Assassin's divisive reputation with DW fans, at its heart I do think it serves as a solid microcosm of why the Doctor distances himself from others of his race (something that Chris Chibnall did very sloppily with the Timeless Children arc).
@nocturne8333
@nocturne8333 2 месяца назад
@@nekusakura6748 I love the TARDIS scene in The Robots of Death, I just feel like it’s worth watching a couple of stories before it. Honestly my biggest problem with The Deadly Assassin is that I find it really un engaging and dull, also the realisation of Gallifrey’s sets is almost as bad as Kastria was in The Hand of Fear. I’m also a bit uneasy about how the Master was handled, especially after Roger Delgado’s unfortunate passing.

It's a stone circle, not a henge. 'Henge' is a ring shaped bank and ditch earthwork monument, usually with the ditch inside the bank. Stonehenge just means it's the henge with the stones in it. There is also woodhenge nearby.
