Imagine if (for some very contrived probably time/space related reason) every episode of Doctor Who, classic and modern, was going to be wiped from history forever. Now imagine that you could save 100 episodes. No more, no less. What would you preserve? What moments? What stories? Which Doctors? Who can be left behind and who MUST be saved? Well, I have no idea what your picks would be, but here are mine.

alright had some time to think about this! 10th planet 4th episode, web of fear 3 and highlander1 was on my save list, so there are three of them, so I can pick three to save, and after doing some SERIOUS thinking the three others I would save 1 the three doctors ep4. William Hartnells final speech "with the way things are going I dont know what you young men would do without me!" not only addressing his first 2 replacements but ALL the other doctors to come, he IS the original (as in the original actor to play the role, we wouldnt have this if not for him!) 2 the zygon inversion, enough said that speech MUST be preserved for all time 3 the third one was hard, 98 episodes which one to choose. Heaven sent, the most perfect treatise for grief I've ever seen

Classic Who Notes: 1. The Time Meddler was 4 Parts 2. Sonic Screwdriver first Appeared in Fury from the Deep 3. The 1st companion to die wasn't Adric (he was the 3rd), it was Katarina in Part 3 of 'The Daleks' Masterplan' (1965). The 2nd was Sara Kingdom in DMP Part 12 (1966). 4. Survival was 3 Parts 5. The '96 TV movie was the only TV Episode between 12/6/89 & 3/26/05, making it the only episode over 16 years - not 26. - P.S.: Have you seen The Moonbase? It's an excellent 2nd Dr & Cybermen episode which I really feel is underrated (mostly b/c only 2/4 episodes exist). Modern Who Notes: 1. Army of Ghosts preservation reason is basically how many Classic Who nuts feel about Part 1's 2. Love seeing some love for The God Complex, thank you 3. Love seeing some love for It Takes You Away b/c - Yeah, It's awesome! - P.S.: Love this video, It's such an interesting concept especially w/ having 851 episodes to choose from (b4 mini episodes).

I have my 100 episodes. I'm using the full story for my version: An Unearthly Child - great intro. The Daleks - self explanatory The Azteks - explains clearly the temptations and pitfalls of going back in time. The Tenth Planet - first regeneration Tomb of the Cybermen - great The Silurians - here for nostalgia: this was my first Doctor Who story, and it does hold up. Day of the Daleks - first time that time-travel was key to the story, rather than just a setting. The Sea Devils - great Master story The Three Doctors - great multi-doctor story. The Time Warrior - Sarah-Jane Smith. Genesis of the Daleks - Davros City of Death - a great story The Five Doctors - another great multi-Doctor outing (and my favourite Peter Davidson story) Vengance on Varos - Best of the Colin Baker episodes Remembrance of the Daleks - shows the chess master 7th Doctor. Doctor Who (Movie) - 8th Doctor Dalek - great outing & brings back Daleks. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances - scary and brilliant School Reunion - Sarah-Jane Smith :D The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit - awesome and scary Blink - Weeping Angels The Fires of Pompeii - Donna is awesome 1 The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky - Donna is awesome 2 Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead - River Song Eleventh Hour - best of the openers The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang - A great finale The Doctor's Wife - the TARDIS is a woman! The Girl Who Waited - Amy and Rory

And how ever many episode I have left over I would then cherry pick from the rest of the Doctors. Probably the 4th Doctor and the 12th Doctor. Thumbs up for including _The God Complex_ and _Extremis_ - although personally I'd ditch _The End of the World_ in favour of _Rose._ The latter was the one that rebooted Doctor Who for a new generation, so it's arguably important for that reason alone. Plus, in the absence of _Spearhead_ and _Terror,_ at least it makes sure that the Autons are preserved for posterity. (Similarly, I like that you included one episode of _Warriors of the Deep,_ so that at least the Silurians and Sea Devils get a look-in.)

A great list. So good I don't need to write my own list that would hardly differ from your choices anyway! I can only see clear three differences from my list: Remove; 'Boomtown', 'The Five Doctors' and 'The Pilot' (we already have the genius of the superior 'An Unearthly Child' but none of these I am removing are bad stories just not my favorites) And replace with 'City of Death', 'The Invasion' and 'Inferno'. There that is my collection! Anyway excellent choices!
@jamiestevens3074
@jamiestevens3074 5 лет назад
Thanks! I had chosen boomtown because I think it represents modern who a lot, very emotional, very funny but can also do dark, gritty scenes too. I chose the five doctors simply because we see so much of classic who, a dalek, the yeti, brigadier, 5 doctors, rassilon and so on.

Most I'd agree with, though I don't know if you need to include the TV movie if 8's being represented by Night of the Doctor. I might have added Lie of the Land to Extremis, just for the Missy/Doctor confrontation in the vault. That little back and forth that lasted maybe five minutes told us so much about Missy and her relationship to the Doctor. Also, The Waters of Mars. That episode was unique in how dark the Doctor could go. It was, arguably, a turning point for him.

I don't know enough of Classic Who to do 100, so I'll do a top 10 of modern Who: 1) The Empty Child: I think it's a great way to introduce the 9th doctor, Rose and Moffat. 2) The Doctor Dances: Captain Jack is great and "everybody lives!"--it balances fear and happiness so well. 3) The Girl in the Fireplace: it's quite emotional and the Clockwork Droids are nightmare fuel! 4) Blink: I promise I'm not just a Moffat fan, but this also has to go on the list for obvious reasons. 5) Journey's End: the conclusion of the best series finale. 6) Vincent and the Doctor: it's a beautiful, emotionally mature episode with so much creativity. 7) The Crimson Horror: it's my favourite episode, I'm allowed a bit of bias--and Diana Rigg is awesome in this! 8) Mummy on the Orient Express: best episode of new Who? Maybe. 9) Heaven Sent: much like Vincent, it's emotionally mature and extremely creative as well as super ambitious. 10) Oxygen: I wish I had given myself more than ten, but if I really had to pick then it would be this one. It's such a unique spin on the base-under-siege idea and is genuinely frightening at times. As much as I do like the 13th doctor, I don't think any of series 11 could beat these stories for me, but I'm very hopeful that series 12 can!

Damn it, why do people keep misunderstanding Hell Bent. It's a brilliant and wonderfully written episode about friendship, love, the craving for power, totalitary regimes, overcoming and accepting one's own flaws, it has some deep and massive tie ins with a lot of the Doctor Who lore, we get to know a bit more about the time lords and what happened to them after the time war, we learn a bit more about Gallifreyan social structures and that not everyone on there is a timelord and we get all of that basically WITHOUT A MAIN ANTAGONIST combined with a beautiful and heartbreaking send off for one of my favourite companions packed into 1 hour of television! It's just not, what you hoped it would be after seeing Heaven Sent and that's in my opinion basically the ONLY real reason, most people have, who hate this episode. Personally, I really love it and I can get over not putting stuff like Akhaten on this list, which I also love. But this and Time of the Doctor are both just way too meaningful and misunderstood gems of modern WHO and tv overall! (Although I would admit, TotD is maybe a bit of a mess, considering everything it tried - and had to - pay off within the runtime of just one single episode! Yet still, it deserves all our respect for how it turned out!)

The one episode I'd put on this list that you didn't would be Episode 4 of "Curse of Fenric" for the climatic scene where the Doctor is first saved by the faith his companion (Ace) has in him, and then he deliberately causes that faith to falter, because that is what was needed to defeat the villain. Not only does that scene show us one of the most powerful Doctor/Companion dynamics in the history of the program, it also illustrates what a manipulative bastard the Doctor can be, sometimes, in the name of saving the world. Not sure what I would swap out to make room for it... Maybe Time Crash (it's cute, but we get to see the Doctor mocking himself in "The Three Doctors").

I don't hate it, in fact I don't mind it, even with it's problems. There are some good parts to it, most of which get overlooked because many focus on only one factor. Still don't think I'll save it though.

I'm a big ol' apologist for Hell Bent. Not only was it my favourite Capaldi finale at the time but I actually thought its focus on the unhealthy parts of the Doctor/Clara relationship retroactively improved some earlier episodes of series 9.

Just a few yiu didn't mention. Episode 3 of 'The Web of Fear' for Gordan Lethbridge-Stewart's first appearance, ironically the one that's missing'. If I keep anything of the sixth Doctor's era it would be Attack of the Cybermen or Revelation of the Daleks. Not because of the title adversaries but I just so happen to think they're his best TV stuff.

I know series 7 gets a lot of hate, but since you didn't really have any episodes from it I'll just say that I think Angles Take Manhattan, Hide, and the Crimson Horror are pretty good. I know that most serial watchers figured out Clara's whole deal ages before 'The Name of the Doctor' so that payoff wasn't very satisfying, but when I binged the series with my boyfriend (who hadn't seen DW before), he found series 7's arc the most satisfying. Inch resting.

Classic era was no better, even the great one had an off day 1st web planet (^ I think!) 2nd wheel in space space pirates (four each I think!) 4th all of season 17 EXCEPT city of death! 4 stories of 4 to 6 chapters each (you could see how tired he was getting at the end!!!) 6th all of season 22 except the 2 doctors!!!!

I would approach these very different to the RU-vidrs I watched. Council of Geeks saved parts of stories, but I will save complete stories (except in a few examples) as I think it would be difficult to watch back with lots of gaps. He also saved them from an academic point of view, the first episode with Sonic Screwdriver for example, whereas I'd save them on the purposes of watching them back, or from the point of view of a new fan getting into Doctor Who. Therefore, I'd prioritise the New Series (in particular the first 5 seasons as I PERSONALLY think those are the ones with the most quality) with only a few episodes missing so people. Also, the new series imo, has a priority as the episodes are twice the length (22 mins vs 45 mins, which is why I prioritised specials too); I can either save The Invasion, or almost ALL of series one! Thus, my list will be controversial, as I kept all the meat of the early few seasons of New Who, but in the guise of someone watching it for the first time, then going back to watch classic stories that summarise their era (and the best). Here we go: Classic An Unearthly Child (Just part 1!!!) Dalek Invasion of Earth (6) Tomb of the Cybermen (4) Terror of the Autons (4) Genesis of the Daleks (6) City of Death (4) The Five Doctors (1) Caves of Androzani (4) Vengeance on Varos (2) Remembrance of the Daleks (4) The TV Movie (Made sure I got a dalek (and davros!) story, a cyberman story, and a master story, as well as the five doctors which is 90 mins long!) 36 episodes Rose End of the World Dalek Father’s Day Empty child/Doctor Dances Bad wolf/Parting of the Ways Christmas Invasion Tooth and Claw School Reunion Girl in fireplace Rise of cybermen/age of steel Impossible planet/satan pit Army of ghosts/doomsday Smith and Jones Shakespeare Code Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of Daleks Human nature/family of blood Blink Utopia/sound of drums/last of time lords Voyage of the damned Fires of Pompeii Sontaran Stratagem/poison sky Unicorn and the wasp Silence in library/forest of the dead Midnight Stolen earth/journeys end Waters of mars End of time part 1 and 2 Eleventh Hour Amy’s choice The Pandorica Opens/The Big bang Christmas Carol The Impossible Astronaut/day of the moon The Doctor's Wife A Good Man Goes to War Asylum of the Daleks The Snowmen Rings of Akhaten Name of the doctor Day of the doctor Time of the doctor Deep Breath Listen Flatline Last Christmas Face the raven/ Heaven Sent World Enough of Time/The Doctor Falls I know this will be very controversial, and of course my own biases have come into play ALOT!!

Have you thought about doing a 'top ten most exciting episodes' list to go with your 'saddest' 'funniest' and 'scariest' lists? Looking back I think my favourite episodes are the ones with the most running down corridors, high stakes, explosions, a ticking clock and tough decisions under pressure. Episodes like Dalek, The Parting Of The Ways, Tooth & Claw, The Satan Pit, 42, Utopia, Voyage Of The Damned, Planet Of The Ood, The Eleventh Hour, Flesh And Stone, Mummy On The Orient Express, Oxygen, the first 2 minutes of The Ghost Monument or the first two minutes of The Tsuranga Conundrum

I don't know anything about classic who, so I can't speak to the first slightly more than half of the list (the reasons you give seem valid). The only major complaint I have about the latter half of the list is the exclusion of The End of Time. You've got an excellent incarnation of Simms's Master. You've got Wilf. You've got the reveal of the Time Lords at the end of Part 1. And you get the wrap up and send off of Tennant and the whole Davies era of Dr. Who. Just so many amazing emotional moments that I couldn't bear to lose to the void. As to what I would cut out for it, I'd take out The God Complex. It is a great episode, but the one and only problem I have with the Girl Who Waited is that it wasn't the last episode with Amy and Rory. The fact that Rory didn't follow through on his pronouncement that "Then we will not travel with you any more!" just really... it really weakens that episode in context. So having The Girl Who Waited be the last Amy and Rory story we have is a plus in my book. The other episode I'd take out would be... probably Time Crash. It hurts me to say it because I love love love Time Crash, but I think we already have other examples of the show's tie to Classic Who with School Reunion and Day of the Doctor. So while Time Crash is great, I have to get rid of something.

Personally the only things I would have done differently is clipped a few Pertwee, Capaldi and Whittaker eps to make room for all 8 episodes of Troughton's The Invasion, (I just really like that story) and include a few but not all of The Two Doctors story, (Giving Colin Baker a little more representation on this list as well as showing Patrick Troughton's last hurrah as The Doctor!) other than that, yeah I agree with this list!!

The Doctor tries to land the TARDIS at the bottom of the Thames in "Logopolis", but it ends up on a river barge. Then, in episode 5 of "Trial of a Time Lord", the TARDIS materialises on a rocky seashore in the shallows of the ocean, but not in it. So I think you're right - "Listen" is the first time the TARDIS is seen underwater.

Some moments I'd be really sad to lose if we go with your list (just off the top of my head - is not meant to cover everything): First meeting of the Dr & Brigadier (& Unit) Certain regenerations (end of Planet of the Spiders & end of Logopolis) Spearhead from Space (start of the Dr being exiled) Jo Grant leaving Romana leaving Curse of Fenric I'd also keep all of the Daleks & all of Dalek Invasion of the Earth (shows how much the story telling changed in just 1 year) Rose - the reintroduction of Doctor Who is arguably the most important moment in the shows history Flatline - Capaldi's best episode in my opinion I could quite happily cut out Colin Baker completely (let everyone think he was really the best Dr by having him survive in Big Finish stories alone) Peter Davidson could be left as 5 Doctors & Caves of Androzani - I don't care about Adric dying Also would consider cutting Jodie's doctor (hoping her second series gives better material to be worth keeping) Would also lose the TV film - #notmydoctorwho I'd basically look to have 1 complete story from each Doctor apart from 6 and then have some other complete stories I particularly enjoy / am fond of (mainly focusing on companions I like), then I would round out to 100 by preserving some of the key moments I've listed above. I actually agree with a lot of your complete story picks & modern who episodes but I'd be more inclined to try and preserve more complete stories especially from Classic Who, so would make selections on that basis.

Good list. I'd personally put Revelation of the Daleks there for the Colin Baker era, and add Kerblam!, but I'm not sure what I'd take out; probably Oxygen, but I'd still need to remove 2 more, and I haven't seen Vengeance on Varos, so I'm not sure if simply subbing them out for Revelation of the Daleks would be the right move. And possibly more episodes for the 1st and 2nd Doctors should be on there, but there's a lot of them I haven't seen, even among the episodes that are available. I was really glad to see The Girl Who Waited (maybe my favorite episode ever) and Night of the Doctor on the list. And I absolutely agree that Rosa and Demons of the Punjab should be included--I've stated before that I can't exactly say that I like those 2 episodes (especially Rosa), but I think they accomplish what they set out to do very well, and I respect the heck out of them.

I could never narrow it down to 100 episodes. 100 from 2005 onwards would be be be much easier as there's a lot that could easily be thrown out there and you'd only be lose 45 episodes (as of 2019) as opposed to several hundred. If you got rid of Human Nature/Family Of Blood, Utopia and the episodes that followed, anything with River Song in it, then that'd probably make up close to the 45 deleted episodes and you wouldn't be missing anything of value (in my opinion). Silence In The Library was good, but once the mystery about River is revealed and it is the most obvious answer (that doesn't really fit with the Doctor's character...but that's another story), then it loses a lot of what made it work. As for the classic series, I can't think of many that I would want to delete. Trial Of A Timelord would free up a lot of space for better episodes, but then we lose an entire series of Colin Baker. Also, it's not all bad. The first section is okay, then Mindwarp happens and it's all downhill from there. I could probably delete any Tegan heavy episodes as I found her rather annoying. Same goes for Mel. So it'd mostly be JNT era episodes that'd be going. It's hard with the first 2 Doctors as so many episodes are missing. I've not seen them to know if they're as great as the ones that we still have. So I guess those ones remain missing so as I don't have to delete any more. I can't think of anything to delete from the Jon Pertwee era. Maybe the Peledon episodes as Alpha's voice starts to become irritating pretty quickly, but then there's good character work there and it's a nice story arc. I don't know. Like I said, 100 episodes is not enough. There are currently 851 episodes in total. I could maybe cut it down to 800 if I really tried.

Can I ask why you chose to save Sleep No More?
@CineScarborough
@CineScarborough 5 лет назад
@@Alex-ux8cl I've spoken online multiple times about how I really love Sleep No More. I think it does a great job with the found footage format, and you can tell Mark Gatiss did a lot of research into that style of filmmaking. He gets everything that people liked about the way The Blair Witch Project was shot. The jerky camera movement, the way the visuals play into the narrative (like when we find out why we can see Clara's perspective when before we assume as the viewer it was everyone's but Clara and the Doctor's), the way the limited cinematography and diegetic sound plays with the psychology of the characters clearly terrified in this situation... And also, like The Blair Witch Project, the characters don't win. Nothing is resolved, and there is an air of mystery that remains. Does the Doctor ever come up triumphant against the Sandmen, or are those of us watching the transmission doomed to be taken over by our sleep dust in the corner of our eyes? How much of what we saw was real and how much was fabricated to create drama? People forget that with The Blair Witch Project we don't actually know who edited the footage that we see together. All we know is that a group of young amateur filmmakers journeyed into the woods, went missing and this footage is what the search parties found. So like Sleep No More, we don't know how heavily in-universe this was edited by someone to create a good story, and how much of it is what 'actually' transpired. If you appreciate the found footage style, then Sleep No More is truly an amazing episode.

I, for one, would be *very* interested in seeing a similar list of, let's say 50 *stories* to preserve (combining the multi- episode stories of the classic era, as well as the multi-part episodes of the modern era), seeing as how there are (if my counts are correct) over 1,000 *episodes*, comprising of 38 seasons (Yes, I count the 1996 TV Movie as a season, and an episode), and 288 (televised) stories, as of this writing.

at twice upon a time there are 851 episodes or 288 stories, as for 50 STORIES 1st had 29 2nd had 21 3rd had 24 4th had 42 (and yes Im including shada) 5th had 20 6th had 8 or 11 (depending on whether you count trial of a time lord as 4 small stories or one big one) 7th had 24 and these infants who have only watched modern who knows how their count goes! I could do 50 stories on 3rd and 4th alone, there are way too many to choose from
