I am 35 mins in and am hoping there are answers as to how the fascists' spells over their supporters were broken. How will we recover from this phase in American history? I have sincerely wondered about this for the last seven+ years.
thanks for this informative film. i'm belgian - belgium got squashed two times by germany in the past century - and i am visiting berlin at the moment, as a proud european and a curious tourist. i am impressed with the way the germans deal with the legacy of world war II and the cold war that followed. it is especially obvious in the way how anarchistic views and opinions are openly expressed and different ways of living are accepted in the german society. germany has become a prosperous and modern country, but the scars of history are all around, and generations of germans paid a hefty price for the actions of their forefathers and foremothers. i am grateful for living in a united europe and it brings me joy that present day germany is part of our big family.

Good on you, Rick Steves, for trying to educate would be Trump voters about the perils of fascism. Trump's rhetoric and behavior is chillingly straight out of the dictator's handbook. I only hope that those who need to learn this lesson are watching, but I fear that they don't have the intellectual interest and curiosity. They want "simple answers" and don't want to be bothered with facts.

Germany had no experience with democratic institutions. Parliamentary systems give space to small radical groups like this. He was able to smother the infant democratic system in its crip. Our circumstances are completely different.
Yes, after the Holocaust we said “Never again.” Then came Cambodia and we said, “The Khmer Rouge is backed by China and we need China on our side against the Soviets, so never again, starting next time.” Then came Rwanda and we said, “Too small and unimportant, so never again, starting next time.” Then came the Rohingya, the Uyghurs, and we still say “Never again, starting next time.”

I was born in Bavaria in 1926, went to ‘Volksschule’ In suburb of Munich and eventually enrolled at Munich’s university, where I took courses in 1:30:27 literature, history and languages.

The tensions of liberal democracy are the same tensions that arise from being a thoughtful, conscientious adult. Yes, you are important but not more so than the other kid in the sandbox. Kids don't _know_ that.

I just came back from a trip to Warsaw where I've taken a few walking tours in famous monuments of WW-2 around the city. This video is a kind of symbolic ting to me, yes indeed I saw how people tend to forget, most of these monuments are pretty hard to locate in Warsaw's living hustling and bustling city. Hearing the horrific stories of each location, it really makes you think of human nature. Just like Warsaw is struggling to find the proper combination between the memory of the past and the need for continues construction and development of the city, that's exactly what we should be all doing in the political seance right now. Thank you Rick for that educational lesson.

The statues around the Fascist stadium in Rome are a reference to ancient Rome. Hadrian's villa in Tripoli has these statues between columns. He would wakk from one to another around his pool. Each statue would be a cue to recall some great truth told in ancient mythology.
Thanks Rick! I come from a comunist country, Cuba. And back in 2016 I saw in Trump the auhoritarism I saw in Castro and Chavez. I beleive is not about left or right, trump just want absolute power and the right is giving him the platform. If comunism was good for him, he would have been more Marxist than Lenin. I hope democracy survives the trumpism.

Brexit was basically a referendum on mass immigration, the people never voted for mass immigration and were never asked. Brexit was their voice, but the uniparty increased immigration post Brexit anyway..

It is ruining friendships, even family. It is all hype and emotion, zero intellect. Being poorly informed and isolationist (cloistered, sheltered), adds to this all hype no facts syndrome. I have not seen it to this level since my first election many years ago. Vote for whoever one wants but at least accept facts and good information.....is my take-but it does not seem to be happening. The aggregate intellectual level of our Republic has declined so much. Read Washington's and Lincoln's writings and compare them the orations of our candidates of today's culture. It is mindboggling how vapid we have become.
I have been following you for some time. I was born and raised in Germany. Even as a young child my grandmother would make sure that I watched the news and listened to her explanations of how much she despised Hitler. She was born in 1911, went thru WWI and later WWIi, raising her children by Herself. To this day I find it totally insane that the American people fall for the same BS a lot of Germans fell for Back in the 1930’s I believe the problem here in the US did not start with the social media, but a glorification that the USA is safe from all intruders and the reluctance to teach children world history. That’s where people like Trump fit in… a wannabe Hitler! Scary

Germans don’t need to have any say regarding the future of our nation. Furthermore a so called “trump land” as you say is exactly what we need. The Democratic Party is against what this country was founded on and we will 110% be in a global conflict if the Democratic Party wins this election.

We lost out on RFK now we must vote for Trump, it's the only way for now. Travel teaches us to appreciate how rare and special it is for America to exist, I would be angry if we lost this democracy.
