Jaydee is an alias of Dutch DJ / producer Robin Albers. Robin is a well known name in the music scene for many years already. In the early 90s he did host “For Those Who Like To Groove”, which was the very first ever show on Dutch radio dedicated to house music. Besides his radio career, Robin was also active in the clubs as a DJ AND…. He was also producing music. During the years he had several hits, with tracks such as “Fiesta” by The Sunclub, he was responsible for the Jody Bernal hit single “Que Si, Que No”, but his most famous track is definately the house classic “Plastic Dreams”, which came out back in 1992 under his alias Jaydee. “Plastic Dreams” became a massive succes, it reached the number 1 position of the US Billboard Hot Dance Music Club / Play Chart, plus in lots of other countries, “Plastic Dreams” made it into the charts as well.
For Muzikxpress episode number 100, I sat down with Robin Albers in his studio, to talk with him about the story behind “Plastic Dreams” and more. The interview is recorded in Dutch, so make sure to turn on the English subtitles.

I still remember when I heard it for the first time. Incredible feeling. That was in February 1993. I was 15 years old. This is one of the top 10 of my life. Timeless Masterpiece

I don't have any hesitation in saying that this track would feature in my top 10 of all time favourite tunes. Think about that, all of those amazing tracks and Plastic Dreams is there. I cannot give it any higher praise than that. House Music has been a constant in my life since the late 80's and I'm still listening now despite being 53 years of age. Thank you Robin for making this and for it to be part of the soundtrack of my life and thank you Muzikxpress for doing a wonderful job of bringing these tunes back in to my life. Peace.

Twan, super gaaf dit! Robin Albers zorgde ervoor met "For those" dat alle house stijlen in Nederland bekend werden. Zaterdagavond van 20.00 tot 22.00 uur zat ik te luisteren. Je voelde je bij de familie horen als je luisterde. De house scene, een toen nog niet-commerciële experimenterende nieuwe stijl, waarbij nieuwe electronische technieken constant werden toegepast. Robin bracht alle stijlen samen. Robin maakte ook veel DJ's groot. Jammer dat "For those" abrupt eindigde. Bizar om te horen dat "Plastic Dreams" geen gehoor kreeg bij Nederlandse labels. R&S was sowieso een gem label toen.

First time I heard this track I was barbacking/ bouncing in the largest nightclub in Jacksonville FL in 1994 and it was spun by the club DJ we had at the time. It still ranks in the top 5 track sets I ever heard.

While a concensus on what is the #1 house track of all time will never be reached, this track is without a contender for that title. Such an awesome tune. Destroyed dance floors. Also if you played it while djing it was great because it was like 10 minutes long. You could have a smoke, go to the bathroom, etc.😂 Don't forget about the David Morales remix which was equally killer.

The low down gong sound he talks about as happening accidentally exists as a preset sound on the Roland JX8P possibly Music Box. I have this synth but not played it for a while but the moment you hear it you will instantly attibute it to Plastic Dreams.

Wow! Leuk interview! Robin Albers is een held! Hij heeft echt heel veel betekend voor de house scene! De man van de hele goede deuntjes en ritmische composities! Heel sympathiek! En hij heeft zo'n gelijk over de Nederlandse radio! Toen hij begon moest Radio 3 FM bijna geen house hebben. Hij is ook degene die vele DJs van de eerste Nederlandse garde groot heeft gemaakt in For those who liked to groove! De bekende housenamen en zelfs Gabber djs die toen nog house en oldschool draaiden waren te gast in zijn programma. Top Twan! You made my day!

I loved 'Plastic Dreams' from the very first moment I heard it, back in 1992. And I very well remember the DJ's comment on the radio: _"10 minutes and still too short"_ How right he was. :-) How many times I tried to come up with a sound similar to this deep bell-sound and teared my hair because I couldn't get there. And now I learn that it was just a preset on an old Roland-synthesizer, played with a very low key. Amazing. :-)

Whenever I have a new sound system to test (like headphones or new car stereo [even rentals!]), Plastic Dreams is always the first track I blast. I just recently got a new car and before I drove from the dealership, I made sure I broke the speakers in with this timeless classic.

Robin, jij bent volgens mij veel eerder begonnen. In '88 heb ik via jou in Venray meegedaan aan de voorrondes van DMX en werd 3e Leuk dit van je te zien

we schrijven het jaar 1984, ik was 19 jaar. Al druk bezig met knippen en plakken op de bandrecorder met als voorbeeld Ben Liebrand en Peter Slaghuis. robin Albers was destijds Dj op de Avro radio en had een item...3x doordraai. je kon je mix opsturen en met wat geluk werd hij uitgezonden op het toenmalige radio Hilversum 3. met een mix van People from Ibiza, colour my love en Guilty van Lime probeerde ik het en tot mijn verassing werd ik op een avond gebeld dorr Robin. Jouw mix willen we uitzenden, kom naar de studio in Hilversum dan gaan we hem opnemen. Zenuwen speelde mij parten destijds en ik kan me herinneren dat Robin zei; we gaan het nog 1 keer proberen anders houdt het op......Dat was DE trigger en het kwam uiteindelijk goed op de band. Man wat een leuke tijd. Ik ben inmiddels 56 jaar jong en nog steeds met muziek bezig:-)

Heel erg bedankt hiervoor Twan ! Voor mij begon de liefde voor house met FTWLTG ! Weet nog goed dat hij in het eerste uur vaker de track "Single Minded People"draaide (vind ik ook nog steeds een topplaat trouwens), een tijdje niet wetende dat die ook door hem geproduceerd was. Hij deed daar eerst een beetje geheimzinnig over. 😊 Robin Albers is echt een held voor mij ! Helaas werd het destijds van de ether gehaald i.v.m. de zgnde "horizontale programmering".. Gelukkig is Robin bijna ieder jaar te vinden op het gezellige oldschool house festival Wooferland, waar hij altijd heerlijke sets draait ! This is in my Top10 best songs of all time. In 2021 it still does not sound old, but sounds cool to my ears, like a huge hit if there were any discos open people would fill the floor to this for the last ~30 years. Like its "timeless".

@@yasin6904 Once I can travel again (and once I have enough budget - this is “just” a hobby for me) I hope to visit Fred Baker for a few interviews. He is also responsible for “Mysteryland”, so fingers crossed! BTW I only do interviews about originals, never about remixes. Most artists prefer to talk about their own tracks instead of remixes they did for others, which I understand of course. Plus stories about originals are more interesting than stories about a remix, so that’s why I don’t do interviews about remixes 😉

Really fascinating interview, particularly the boxes in his office part, that must've been so surreal for him, knowing that 50,000-100,000 copies of his production were stacked up in the office of the boss of R&S! Great interview, only thing that bothered me were the colors, after a while I had to look away because my eyes started to hurt. Furthermore, did you know he was at one time the Dutch champion armwrestling and also presented a TV program. So much talent! I still have the double cd of FTWLTG. Lastly, he is so right when it comes to music on radios nowadays, they just want to shove their music down your throats. I quite listening to the radio at the beginning of this century. I wish it was still like the early nineties. Miss those days!

I was in the studio from Robin when he was making this track. In the beginning the was no delay in the intro. Robin lost the right parameters. But finally he found them and I was surprised and amazed. It was the right sound and I saw a big smile on Robin's face. He also was relieved that he found the right delay on the intro. A few weeks later I heared the whole song. YES thsi is what we wanted to hear. 🙂

die lage bel achtig geluid in plastic dreams klinkt als stoom dat vanuit een verkeerskegel naar buiten word geblazen als een soort koeltoren. eerste keer dat ik die track hoorde was met een maat van mij toen wij onder onvloed van paddos waren en ik had toen een thuis staan waar ik een snoer met lampje in heb gemaakt en daaronder in die pion had ik toen een schoteltje met wierroek erop ingezet en toen plastic dreams voorbij kwam leek het net of die rook op de maat van die track naar buiten geblazen werd bovenaan vanuit dat gat in die pion dus vandaar. sindsdien noem ik het ook geen plastic dreams maar Het Pionnenlied

I have a feeling that Robin Albers is the kind of person that will be successfull in whichever scene he chooses to be. If he was interested in politics, he would be a successfull politician, if in formula 1, he would be a successfull driver. Etcetera. Intelligent person, and a great track.

@@muzikxpress maar zijn kijk op de huidige muziek is helemaal terecht. Ik ben zelf grote fan van de tijd van toen, vanaf de opkomst van House eind 70 (overgang vanuit Disco) en begin 80. Die tijd was gewoon magisch. De Belgen en Nederlanders hebben er eind 80 - begin 90 echt hun eigen ding mee gedaan en heel die periode heeft een prachtige eigen identiteit. Voor de muziek die nu, vandaag de dag, de ronde gaat, is het huilen met de pet op.

@@bramrolus965 Ja daarom focus ik vooral op tracks uit de jaren 80 / 90 (en early 00s); een beetje de muziek waar ik mee ben opgegroeid. Ik heb nog een hele wish list met namen die ik graag een keer wil interviewen, alleen door de pandemie valt het helaas niet mee, maarrr..... er komt zeker nog meer! :)

@@bramrolus965 Hedendaagse muziek lijkt enigszins stil te staan. Juist het werken met beperkingen (budget, apparatuur), en dat een nieuw geluid (en een soort van scene) eerst in een soort van isolatie zich kan ontwikkelen, zijn tegenwoordig niet meer aan de orde. Dat is een probleem, zo lijkt het. Ook is er tegenwoordig zoveel aanbod, dat het lastig is om er nog uit te springen, en als je dat al doet, komen er binnen korte tijd mensen die je geluid kopiëren.

@@muzikxpress I've been wanting to create some content (or somebody to create some content) like this for a while. What I would really like to see on top of the excellent story of how the track was created and with what synths/equipment were used, is a breakdown of the track in Ableton or Logic, for the producers to pass on some knowledge/tricks on how to create that sound, that track. Maybe a video showing how to recreate the most famous house/trance/techno tracks in either of those 2 DAW's, to teach a new generation the old tricks. What do you think?

@@damo5791 I'm more interested in the stories behind the tracks. I'm also not a producer myself, so I have very limited knowledge about producing etc, so I'm not the right person to ask a lot of questions about the production etc. I always try to ask with what kind of equipment a certain track was made since I know there's a lot of people (producers) that want to know that. But it would be weird if I ask a lot of technical questions, since I'm a n00b when it comes to that. Plus the main part of my following doesn't know much about producing either, most are people that like to hear the stories behind the classics :) Hope this explains a bit what I do etc :)

@@muzikxpressmakes perfect sense and still an excellent channel and videos you are producing. I'm going through them now and enjoying them a lot. I think there's certainly a gap in the RU-vid market for the producing secrets/recreation of classics by the producers that made them originally that can be filled in another video/channel...maybe I need to start it :-) All the best and keep the great content coming.

Ik denk precies te weten wat hij bedoeld, hedendaagse muziek is enorm gestroomlijnd ten opzichte van de tracks tussen, laten we zeggen '88-'96, je merkt een duidelijke opbouw, pieken en dalen - verhaalvertelling is duidelijk aanwezig. Ten heden dagen is het meer drops, breaks, peaks of "vinger wijzen naar het plafond"-stukjes zal ik maar zeggen... Nu zeg ik niet dat het allemaal pet is, het is echter zeker zo dat een echte verhaallijn er niet meer inzit. Komt er ooit nog eens een interview met Union Jack en bijv. Talla 2xlc? Ook echte oldschool pioniers. Two full moons and a trout - dat is pas verhalen vertellen :)

Dank je! En tegenwoordig denken veel producers (en hun managers) veel te veel na over hoe een track moet klinken, ze kijken wat populair is etc. In het verleden werd muziek (naar mijn idee) meer met passie gemaakt, gewoon omdat de producers het ECHT leuk vonden om te doen. Dus dat ben ik zeker met je eens! Wat betreft je vraag, ik wil Simon Berry heel graag interviewen, alleen is hij niet zo vaak in Nederland helaas (ik heb geen reis-budget voor de interviews aangezien dit een hobby voor me is). Ik zou Simon heel graag over een Art Of Trance track en een Union Jack track interviewen en dan ook meer vragen over Platipus. Talla heeft vast veel mooie verhalen over DJ-en etc, alleen voor mijn vlogs focus ik echt op de classics en de productie / het verhaal achter de productie. Ik denk niet dat Talla daar heel veel over kan vertellen als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel ;-) Mocht ik ooit naar Frankfurt gaan, dan heb ik al een rijtje met mooie namen op de wish-list, die ook echt een studio hebben en (nog steeds) hun eigen muziek maken. Weet niet of dat dit jaar nog gaat lukken gezien de Corona crisis, maar anders hopelijk volgend jaar :)

Rumour has it, World Dominance - Compression, is the record that was sampled for the background breakbeat in Plastic Dreams, with a phaser effect on it. What do you think?

Not really, "Music Is So Special" was also a great track, plus he did stuff under other names as well. He had a massive hit as "The Sunclub" with the track "Fiesta" as well. Very different than "Plastic Dreams", but a huge hit (and also the cover-versions and remixes that came out later).
