That disarmingly sweet piano intro by Jimmy Jam grabs hold of your sentimental side and doesn't let go. The chorus lulls you deeper as you are held, tenderly, until Jam's piano outro gently lets you go. And part of you wishes it would never end.
Yeah they say blood is thicker than water but when it comes to expanding your stardom and pursuing your dreams sometimes the very people you love can hold you back and that's why Janet fired her dad.If she haven't made that drastic move and accept to be under the wing of Jam & Lewis she wouldn't be the Janet we know of today.
I'm not really the sentimental type. but there's something about this song that brings a tear to my eye, maybe because this era of great music is so long gone, never to return and it feels like I lost a friend
tony tookie, You're so right, I feels like one lost a love one, looking at these times and seeing all the loss love for family and children makes you cry, because when we go we'll have to leave our defenseless ones ,the children, behind.
I agree. This generation of music has some sparks and flashes here and there, but there is no comparison to the beautifully diverse and creative sounds that my generation grew up listening to in the 70s & 80s. I thank sites like RU-vid for being here to keep it alive for those of us who still appreciate hearing it.
Babyface is good, but these two are still the biggest producers of all time. No one has surpassed them and probably never will. Their hits are endless and the number of artists they've worked with is mind boggling. They are my idols and wish they would do more in this era.
+Ezekiel Major I see how you could say that, but I think Face was a better overall songwriter/producer. He wrote such great songs, that producing them with LA was easy. Jam and Lewis played such great jams/grooves that they turned into songs. Like they said, Funky bottom with a pop melody. People also forget Babyface had a team with LA Reid and the forgotten one, Darry Simmons. They were a team just like Jam and Lewis though Babyface did the majority of the writing. I kinda like Face more, though most days I struggle picking between the two.
I'm sorry my friend, but Jam & Lewis's reign was a lot longer than Babyface's. Jam & Lewis dominated the eighties with several #1's or top 10 hits, and even wrote hits in the 90's, while baby face pretty much had a short window of hits in the 90's. Jam & Lewis's portfolio is much longer than LA & Face.
+Ezekiel Major Nah. Babyface and Jam and Lewis still are neck and neck. Meanwhile Babyface quietly has more grammys. It's not an either or neither. They're both great. Both genreless. Babyface is more well known. Jam and Lewis have never scored a film soundtrack for multiple films. Babyface is still writing with Mariah, Toni etc. Jam and Lewis are too, it's just a different lane. Idk why, but Babyface is more well known. I think cuz his songwriting is so strong, but he just is a household name. Probably because he sings as well as writes for everyone. Jam and Lewis are nuts though
Wrong my friend. Jam & Lewis are very well known and Jam himself actually sits on the board one of the awards academies. When you look at the amount of artists jam & Lewis have wrote for and hits generated, Face's body of work is nowhere near theirs. I'm not saying face isn't awesome, but Jam & Lewis are still on an entirely different level above face. As I said, Face's back to back success was short compared to Jam & Lewis. These guys were knocking off hit after hit after hit in their era and can still do it today if they really wanted, but they have kind of fallen back and are letting the new producers take the reigns - Pharrell, Swizz Beats, Jerkins, R. Kelly etc.
+Ezekiel Major I respect your opinion. I just disagree. I think they're both timeless which is why they're both still working and very wealthy. But there's only two kinds of music in reality. Good and bad.
Obviously I’ve known their music for decades, and the name “Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis”, but I literally have never heard them interviewed until today on RU-vid. Wow I’m so impressed with these guys as people. They seem so humble, down to Earth, and so good to each other as friends.
One of the best “end of the evening songs” of the 80’s - A true great, covered well by Kenny Thomas. However, you can’t beat the original. Great times - long gone now.
The thing that really drives the song for me are the keys. The piano melody is so lush and filled with emotion. The vocals are great, too, with the old school harmony, but that piano is definitely the lead. I wish it could go on forever and the way it whispers near the end, man... just beautiful. That song was an instant classic.
Yea, their catalog is fucking insane! They wrote and produced "Can You Stand The Rain" by New Edition, "The Finest" by SOS Band, "Human" by The Human League, "On Bended Knee" by Boys II Men and a the list goes on and on. Their talent is endless.
These cats are Legends, they started everything off. They gave a spark to LA and Babyface. Along with Teddy Riley, these 5 brothers lite up the 90’s, and were responsible for almost every hit song of that decade.
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis are legends in the R&B world but their writing transcends all boundaries. Music has no boundaries and can reach all segments of society, regardless of class or color. This song still reminds me of being in love with a girl named Wendy in high school and all of the great times along with it. I hope this duo continue to write & produce forever. 🙏🏾😎
I'm jealous of these guys. Their chemistry more than brothers. History between them from childhood. I love them wish I could have that someone from my past.
The true beauty of this song is how toned down it actually is beyond the piano. They were correct in that it's a very simple song. These guys are responsible for some of the best R&B songs EVER. True legends.
Absolutely Terry, the movie had heart, a boy and girl. Not surprised you two wrote Tender Love. Everything u two touched was gold. Force MD’s, Sheila E, LL, Run D MC. Classic
Without a doubt one of the best love ballads ever written and a 1980's sensation. I can hear this song over and over again and never get tired of it because it clearly defines a moment in my life that I am sure many of you can relate to as well. 💔😢😢😢
I am an old school woman. I grew up in that era when I heard all those beautiful songs from Blue Magic, Stylistics, Chi lites so, so many. When I heard Tender love I immediately fell in love with that song. I fell in love with the group. You did good Jam and Lewis. Thank you... Thank you... and Thank you for the times you were with Prince. RIP TLC.
Wow! I didn't know Jimmy Jam and Lewis produced "Tender Love". Anytime you can come up with classic jams such as "Tender Love" and "Can U Stand The Rain", you are a damn GENIUS. And that's what Terry and Jimmy are.

I love the way Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis sing Tender Love. They both are my mentors as song writers and performers. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, you two are the ones who inspired me into becoming the singer songwriter I am today. You both are true music creators and I'm deeply grateful and appreciative of your music. My heart is speechless because my heart is unable to express what you two truly mean to me.

As someone who loves the origin and meaning of words, "Tender Love" is a song notable for various occasions, so I'm swooning. And Force MD is the unforgotten force of music. ❤💝❤️🙏
@ Steel305 thank you, this song brings me back I was in the 10th grade. I was in love with Alton 😃 "...I just can't understand No I don't understand Why my feelings get so confused. Why I love you like I do, so I'm helplessly in love"
Been so in love with the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis sound since I was growing up as a kid in the 1990s. Just straight up magic and grace on them keyboards, pianos, and drums for decades man.
After seeing this on the DVD, I was floored about the story. I couldn't believe how prolific the story was. I have a copy of Tender Love on many different Vinyl Albums, 12" singles and 45's

Absolutely wonderful. I want to learn to play the piano for this song only. Hard to believe they came up with this song so easily. Says a lot about how talented these guys are.
This soft and beautiful song was a monster hit and played on every boom box every tape deck every supermarket and all pop stations when it was out. 30 times a day. Oh and I went to school with the lead singer of the FMDs who walked around singing “Let me love you” all friggin day. When I heard it on the radio I was like WHAAAAAAT?
Great legends, it is so wonderful that artists who write and produce a lot of songs are coming out to be recognized. Generation to come need to see this.
