@@drinkingpoolwater Couldn't have screwed him yoo hard because he's still going strong and contributing. Besides, Morris also could have stopped saying yes.
I Love, Respect, Admire and have been greatly Influenced by: Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis = Greatest R&B Producers of All Time ( bar none ). Absolute Legends. oNe LovE from NYC
Morris Day was AWESOME! I remember in DC, waiting for several hours in a line that snaked all the way down the sidewalk and around the corner down the block to watch Purple Rain again. Prince of course was the main reason but Morris really helped make the movie what it was. I used to think that the ULTIMATE sign of success was to have an employee whose job it was to walk around and carry a full sized framed mirror for me.
Almost every great movie is going to need a great rival for the protagonist to overcome. Morris Day is a great rival since their high school band days and a great friend that Prince took decades to realize how much he missed.
He's justified. Prince had been an asshole to them by not allowing them to use the name while he was alive. Also remember, he fired them and even though the did better without him, no one ever forgets who did what.
Prince was a big, major asshole to many of his associates, bandmates, and protégés. He treated the Time like shit on his Controversy tour, kicked Jimmy Jam and Terry out of the band for getting caught in the blizzard, and was just mean. Andre Cymone’s family took him in when no one else wanted his ass around, and look what happened. Replaced him. He wasn’t a very nice guy, which is why towards the end all he had were sycophants
P wanted the last memory to be stuck Morris's head... A solo clap down a dark hallway from one of your toughest critics ?!? Who will ever forget that...
I met Morris at the IP casino in Biloxi They say don't meet your heroes But he was a very nice gentleman and treated me with the utmost respect I still be Jammin the time
Prince, The Time, Vanity 6, Alexander O'Neal ect.... Wow! You couldn't get any better during the late 70's and 80's. If you add the SOS Band, Atlantic Star and the Daz Band you just might let it Whip!
I don't think you can call them rivals when Prince wrote all the songs, played all the instruments and sang all the lyrics that you had to follow note for note thats not really rivals
Random info. I was literally listening to this interview in my car on Sirius when I was delivering Grubhub. Knocked on the door, handed the friendly guy his food, thanked him, door closes. I turned around and my mouth dropped. Looked at the customer’s name: Morris D. I ALMOST SHIT MYSELF. 😱
First, I'd like to say how much I love Prince and have appreciated his magnificent talents since I was fourteen years old. Now, with that being said, please, I do not want anyone to take this wrong . I have read and listened to many of the people in podcasts that played music with Prince and were friends of his for the last 30 years and I have done my best to make an honest judgement call on the treatment of Morris Day from Prince . The last meeting Morris speaks of here is very sad. I believe Princes _spirit_ knew all along that he wouldn't live much longer from his instagram post and tweets. Also, he looked very unhealthy and he knew it. Morris spirit /heart also led him to _feel_ all the emotions and feelings he was having . Prince knew he was greedy and emotionally cruel to Morris in the past. Morris didn't even know what the movie Purple Rain was about until he saw it later. He cheated Morris a _lot_ on the financial part of deals, do not forget that Morris _trusted_ Prince and didn't ask the questions he should had, considering business ventures, but Morris didn't understand all of the correct business decisions and contracts he should have stipulated be completed beforehand. I am not favoring one over the other either. Not at all. I'm just stating that I felt this should be noted to understand their last meeting and how special and _much_ _needed_ _the_ _moment_ was for both of them! and Prince coming out of the darkness and hugging Morris and saying, "I love you" to him, was a beautiful and final moment that put closure to all of the past, regardless of any negativity that may or may not have been between them. ☁️💜☁️☁️
He was jealous of Morris like Rick James was of him. With Rick it was the multi talent Prince possessed at skill. But with Morris, I believe Prince envied his cool and lack of needing to constantly improve himself in order remain great every single night in perform. Maybe that last time was him finally saying it in his own way.
Rick James was multi-talented too... Rick could play multiple instruments, write, arrange & produce music & sing. He was not jealous of Prince, he resented the fact that Prince borrowed from him & was influenced by him but tried to act like he was superior to him.
@@wolf7el356 maybe at the time - which was when Prince and the Revolution were still in the inception phase opening for Rick James' Band. But Prince quickly outshone Rick James and really, if you're going to cite funk bands that inspired Prince, it was more James Brown and the P-Funk along with that old Motown sound from the 50s-70s.
Not necessarily and don't start spooking people out. Too many times I've heard people say that "I wished I told him/her I loved them" after someone passes. This way of thinking that I love you can mean good bye could cause some people to never say it. Think about that!
@Edward Newsome If you stop being irrational. Not once did Morris Day say "I knew Prince was deadly ill" or" I had heard about Prince's recent health issues, etc". Not even "Yeah man Prince looked like he was dying". Now unless you or Barbara here are paranormal, then stop with the mystical bullshit! When you say "I love you" that's what it means. When you say "Goodbye, later or peace out" that's what it means. I told my cousin Jeanne last week that I loved her and that was all it meant!
@Edward Newsome and @Barbara Williamson If Prince had said "I love you, goodbye" it would have meant to me that he had decided not to see Morris Day again for the rest of his life no matter how long or short it may have been!
@Edward Newsome You need to listen to this interview again. Morris never said that he was concerned after his meeting with Prince and Prince telling him I love you. He basically sounded surprised and confused by it. He even said that he didn't know that would have been the last time he would see Prince.
I'm sure he must have felt some guilt over how he took the rivalry too far BACKSTAGE. Morris Day and The Time deserved better. Prince was a proud man though. It took him a long time before he could get to that level of maturity and by then, The Time was no more - and performing on their own seperate and then later on as The Original 7ven. I believe they are back to reuniting when they feel like it as The Time thanks to the Prince estate settling with them on the name?
Straight Outta East St Louis Ill, I was Morris Day and the Time's mirror man, background vocalist and percussionist from April 2007-February 2015, Jimmy Kimmel Live being my last show with the organization. I always knew that I wanted to be with them ever since the Get It Up album was released in 82-83. I'd stare at the album cover for 20 plus years saying out loud "They're only missing one person. ME!" In April of 2007, my 46th birthday weekend I was contemplating suicide. I hated my life with $65 to my name til payday working at Greyhound Bus Station in Las Vegas. I chose life that weekend and went to both shows at Boulder Station, got backstage promoting myself to them, as I did 9x prior when they played Las Vegas. I let mgmt know "If anyone gets sick, too tired to play, wanna take a vacation...I'm your man! I know the whole show on lead/bass guitar, lead/ background vocals and steps." The mgr Mr. Jesse Hamner said "Yeah, Morris know you. We're having personnel problems. Give your info to JB (James Bryant) security and somebody will be calling you." My first show was June 2007, Milwaukee, WI. God blessed me with my heart's desire to work with the group and HE is the best knower. Congratulations Morris on your new book and album. Also, thank you for allowing me to be part of the history that you and Prince created. Much continued success 2U, Jellybean, Monte' Moir, Freeze, Jmak, Tory, and Brotha Thomas!!!!!!!😎
@@pickzkickz Right on pickzkickz!👌I'd been with them about 3yrs at the time and was Living The Dream! Though I was playing Jerome Benton's role, when he quit in 2006, now Brotha Thomas Austin has replaced me and doing a damn good job!.... He doesn't bring the mirror like I did..... But I didn't compare to Jerome Benton either, when bringing the mirror!😂 Thanks!!!😎
@Patricia Walton Yes it was a dream come true to be with them! I was hired because I resembled Jerome, but I was bigger and shorter and I couldn't do splits!😆. On a September 2008-2009 Sunset Junction show in California, the line up was Deniece Williams (she'd fallen off the stage that night) The Emotions, Sinbad and uh...other acts. Morris told me in our tent before we went onstage "I like your energy, you're coming along good with the routine. But what I like most is that you bring positivity to the group. And that's something we're missing or (don't have)" I can't recall exactly. Yes. When I was replaced without warning or notice in February 2015, I went into depression for a year. But Patricia I enjoyed myself those 8yrs! I'm on Facebook under Sylvester Donald Jr. Thanks so much for responding!😎
Morris just said it Prince was Prince, He has always struggled with his earthly self, it's in he's music from day one the song strange relationship, on Oprah Winfrey, he said there is another person inside of me, he was a Gemini, and if you asked anybody who knows a Gemini, they know what I'm talking about. He's music shows his battle with his self good, bad,and ugly. Which everyone has on this planet earth. My you live to see the Dawn
like they say since you never know when someone's going away for good you should enjoy and cherish every conceivable moment you can - the good ones and the bad ones. You may live to regret it when you do hear of their untimely passing.
I had friend call me out of the clear blue one day . He told me that he loved me and valued our friendship. This guy never ever said anything like that to me in’s all the years I’ve known him. That was the last time I spoke with him. He suddenly passed a few days later
Why when black people lose weight other black people think they're sick. Its like we associate being big with being healthy. N not the other way around. We have a lot of things we need to work on mentally.
@@derricknregina True. It happen tome too. But,I wasn't as weighty as Jimmy. But, still my friends or Black friends notice immediately. So maybe it's a natural reaction. Nothing to do with mental. Don't you think? For someone who is a supporter of Jimmy for years. This is a dramatic weight loss. I only said I hope he's alright. I never seen him that emaciated. Sorry it shocked me. I only recognize his voice.
There's a good chance he had some form of gastric bypass surgery. The procedure is a multi step approach which includes weight training. Two of the patients that you have to be stern with are (1) women who've never been physically active and (2) men who were never physicially active. Depending on when he had to procedure done, he might not have gotten into full swing with the weight training just yet. Some do; some don't.
I mean I get you but prince has a lot to do with morris' career if there was no prince then morris would be most likely nothing. But I get what your saying.
@@909khris I promise u want find a Morris video with out Prince being mentioned and I promise you want find a prince interview when they even mention Morris lol
@@barrycunningham9360 Well I mean Morris really didnt do anything to contribute to prince's career. So there is no reason to ask prince about him. I know morris was prince's drummer in the early early days and was in purple rain but like I said morris wouldn't be nothing without prince.
It just so happens Prince & Morris were both in Minnesota and met in middle school. Both were musicians and they will forever be linked. No one knows if Morris Day would have made it on his own because Prince was so immensely talented. Don't act like Prince didn't have an eye for talent cause he rode with Morris for a good minute. I think Morris would have found his own path without Prince but fate saw that they would be forever intertwined.
Oh, damn... He's fucking sick. Lost weight my ass.. *I seen Charlie Murphy on TV One looking like this...the next week he was fucking dead* I'm already tearing up.
Jimmy Jam, hope you're doing ok Health wise. I'm a fan of you most my life. Whatever weight loss plan you're on, can you fill me in because I've been trying for DECADES to lose weight. Thanks
He's said he had so much music inside him that sometimes it wouldn't let him just rest. Other than women, music was his biggest love and he couldn't quit music because it was flowing from him like a gift from God. So, when we're tired, sometimes we do stupid things. Also, he was naturally shy, but a showboat, and also a true Gemini. MAYBE if his parents had gotten along better - and his childhood gone normally - if the crowd at the Rolling Stones concert hadn't shaken his self-confidence - if, if if - but Prince lived long enough to mature and that is a wonderful gift too.
//: They grew up with him so they knew him personally and professionally. Brother's know the truth and they didn't even "PHUKK" wit Prince.....no shade.
This type of friendship, long time friends being competitive with one having more success and the upper hand in business and social status, is not unusual. The highly successful individual knows he or she only have a few trusted friends and it is usually the one who know you with nothing and rode with you all the way to fame before the split.
I didn't even recognize Jimmy jam he's looks smaller but he's ok I Wonder why he didn't connect with prince during the last days..he should thank prince for his career start even though Jimmy jam and Terry Lewis already had producing other artists in mind way before prince started Purple rain because they were already tired of being kicked off so many tour dates during 1999 tour and controversy because The Time were kicking prince ass and he didn't like it ...so when prince fired Jimmy jam and Terry Lewis ..The Time didn't want to tour with prince during Purple rain era so that's why he chose Sheila E to be open act .. because prince already knew that The Time was going to steal the show again
Wow it's such a blessing to make peace because God's commandment indicate that we need to forgive in order to be acknowledged before Jesus's father God blessings 🙏
Prince could not have lived in this Prince after world that’s why he had to leave he couldn’t see himself as an old man . He had to die young now he will forever be 57.
What's up with Jimmy? Dude looks a little...sick...I'm just wondering. Compare this Jimmy with this one - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5iozb_8DanQ.html
Prince made the times first record so without Prince Jimmy Jam Terry Lewis and Morrison them they wouldn't be who they are right now that had to hurt knowing that he will see him that very last time and then he would die after
Are you kidding me? People choose to lose weight. Did you ever consider that Jimmy recognized he was overweight and decided to do something about it? Pay attention!
@@aiconic10 his face is gaunt... he looks sick... true, people lose weight all the time, but Jim looks sick... as a FAN of Him and His Brother Terry, I'm concerned... DUMB ASS...
Prince was a musical prophet to me growing up in the late 70's and 80's. And Morris was the perfect musical counterpart. Oh,... I took my son to a casino (Wild Horse Pass) in AZ where 'The Time' were performing several years ago and Morris shook my teenage son's hand a few times as he performed and my son thought that was so 'Cool!'
Damn every time I look at jimmy jam he looks different first he was a skinny dude with a curl then he gained weight in 90’s and now I barely recognize the guy
Jam & Lewis were eating...literally...Terry has always been slim but now he got thick with a gut now and Jimmy Jam looks '81 again hahahaa - watch the Time video 'Cool'...that's when Jimmy Jam looked like Malcolm Jamal-Warner aka Theo.
On the prince estate ban on Morris, here’s a different angle, I think by the time of the last meeting prince Henry gained full control and ownership of his early significant work which he did under Warner Brothers i.e. master tapes rights to do what he wants and control his legacy etc. etc. he finally won. Therefore could have been The Prince was so happy that now he can allow or at that point allow Maurice to use his name and the name of that time I mean Morris had been using it for touring only but what about recordings new recordings new plant new ideas I think he would have even given the family the rights to use the name the family. Apollonia also mentioned this that prince wanted to get A6 together again towards the end. So perhaps that’s what that love was about but he had finally freed his associated artist also. As a fan of 30+ years following prince his career and is associated artists work as well very closely with a lot of love also distant I don’t know them personally but you know art and music has a way of a strange beautiful beautiful strange… We have connecting people, anyways, I’ve been thinking about the estate band and how it’s a return to the very thing that prince wanted liberty and liberate himself and his closest prodigies from. It’s shameful. But I also in fact any fan who loves prince can also ban any purchasing of towels candles even new music etc. etc.
im happy that he had that meeting with Prince, because that relationship was a rolercoster for both...but i like to think that in a paralel universe Grand Central got a record contract and they stuck together their whole lifes just jamming it out becoming a well loved cultband among people who love music.
Wow amazing story. Thanks for sharing guys. Please please please can we get The Time playing some gigs in the UK when the pandemic madness is over. Love & Peace.
You guys, and if I can be candid, have to all get out here with a big tribute/ reunion show with Sheila, Time, T&J, and the whole cast. Bring in Janet and some other artists that you have worked with and just turn up. It’s really unfortunate that Price is gone. Let this be the motivation to put side differences and or any of that kinda stuff. We want to support and reminisce with you and bring our grown up children and let them appreciate the music. We wanna come and celebrate and show love. I think that it would be amazing. Just a thought. You all are so loved and appreciated.
