Frank Zenker is a DJ / producer from Frankfurt in Germany. He is mainly known as Scot Project, but he also released music under names such as Arome and De Zenk for example. Plus in 2018 Frank and Mark Sherry teamed up for a new project, which they called Gentech.
Frank is also responsible for remixes for acts such as Cosmic Gate, Dance 2 Trance, Interactive, Hennes & Cold, Yves Deruyter, Yoji Biomehanika, Niels van Gogh, DJ Sakin & Friends, Bart Claessen, Marcel Woods and many others.
Because of the 25th anniversary of the Scot Project track “U (I Got A Feeling)”, I recently sat down with Frank, to talk with him about the story behind this great hardtrance classic.

Finally found someone else who loves O (Overdrive) as much as I do!! Totally on my my top 3 list of all time favorites of any genre. That track is just simply magical and still makes me teary eyed listening to it today. My second favorite, from him (Gentech, but still very much Scot Project) and one that always brings back memories of my trip to Canada, Niagara Falls is "Feel My Love." There is something about that track that is captivating in ways I can't explain. But yeah bro, I love playing his records, Scot is a legend. Stay safe and healthy! -PLUR

Nobody's talking about FM1 in the comment section. That's sad, is one of the most diverse and creative tracks in the history of dance music, what it does with the climax may be still unmatched. It was one of the reasons why dance music was really nice back then

He played YEARS ago at Slinky Hard (not my cup of tea at all) at Creation in Bristol where I worked. He had a black leather UDG record bag which I remember looking at and thinking, "That's DOOOOOOPPE..." I literally hadn't thought about it again until I saw his name in my RU-vid feed. Bizarre what you remember.

The compilation "Rave Mission 6" is in my Top 5 all time compilation. DJ Scot Project - U was on that album. That entire compilation is gold, but the build up and pure acid in the "U" is still outstanding. Speaking of which, let me just put Rave Mission 6 into Winamp right now.

I was only a kid when I heard this track in a roundabout way. In the late 90s, a record called DAMMIT JANET was released by an act called Pants & Corset, which samples this song.

Thank you for interviewing Frank. Good job muzikxpress. This guy set a precedent for a lot of aspects in dance music. Back in the 90s, when U was played at the clubs... You cannot describe the feeling unless you were there. The breakdown, the silence and then that famous 303 acid wobble eventually building up and throwing you all over the place. It's crazy how much he achieved with very little, like a lot of other producers back then. Atari cubase and a few basic synths MIDI-ed up... Yet it has such a huge impact decades later.

I think I was 12 years old when I heard and saw the "Overdrive" for the first time (Mtv2 odc40 some 17-18 years ago, if Im right). I used to think to myself "This is what I want to do some day". It was a few years after the war in Yugoslavia ended, and that was something totally out of this world down here. I still feel the rush of it, and it brings back so many memories. I fell in love with trance when i was 8yo, and I still am to this day, because of people like him. I could understand their emotion. And that is what trance music should do. Its a Journey. A feeling that cuts in your soul and stays there forever. And Tocs... that one sits in the trance hall of fame. A true legend, lord of hard trance. What a guy. Thank you Frank, thank you for everything. Greetings from Croatia.

Absolutely legend. I've followed this guy from around 2005 and no other artist has a sound like Scot Project. A big remix I remember is Mr Bright Purple, that tune racked the place in the Coach Night club Banbridge. Can't wait for goodgreef birthday party on 28th and his 25 year set.

Great interview as always. Frank always seems so down to earth and clearly loves the music he has produced. Absolute pioneer in the hard trance world! His sound is so unique and yet instantly recognisable as his productions. So many people have tried to copy him over the years but never been able to match his power and energy! More a fan of his 1999-2002 productions like Thunder in paradise, freedom of expression, second trip, french kiss, F, O etc but recently Bear Pit and Sangre Caliente are such awesome tracks in my opinion! Huge, huge, huge respect to the one and only Frank Zenker!

The past decade was so exciting for Trance music, atleast for me. From my early years digging into really deep progressive, following up with some mad euforia & Now im so in love with tech & hard trance! I feel the new boys Renegade System, Shugz, David Rust & ConnecteD bring in so much unique flavor for harder styles in Trance that made SHOKK, Picotto & Kan Cold so iconic. Trance is a wonderful place and I feel the 2020s will be a Hard Trance Revolution!

I've played this tune in an old school house set, techno set as well as a trance set and it just slots in like it was meant to be there. Its simplicity is its key. "Age of Love" is another such track and like that one, this track is a true masterpiece...

''Hardtrancer''! I know his tracks mostly from the years 2000-2005 as F (Future Is Now!), O (Overdrive), R (Rock!), S (Outerspace) etc. I think the best his track for me was O (Overdrive) from 2001. I listened to it very often then. Also a cool music video was recorded for this track.

Started listening to Scott project in 2001 the future is now and continued to follow his music up to 2022. Loved every track absolute powerhouse in the hard trance world . Some of the best times of my life was listening to Scott project sets . Brilliant interview great to see the man behind the music . Interesting guy and down to earth , great to hear some of the old stories. The future is now ,fm1 , fm2, Fm3 , X, u, ghost, I want your love and rock all time favourites all great mixes couldn't name a tune wasn't an all time banger .the last show in Belfast Northern Ireland was absolutely outstanding

a pioneer of hard trance. :: bows :: it’s crazy because mark sherry and scot project are my favorite DJ’s and i never thought they would end up making music together and it’s just insane.... i absorbed mark sherry tech trance as the closest thing i’d get to hear scot projects sorta style and go figure he comes back and they make gentech later on... it’s beautiful , godbless frank and thank you 🙏🏻 you both are pioneers of your genre’s and i had too many crazy nights @ club exit in NYC during late 99-03 because of you. sickest sets hands down... great interview man 👌🏻

Simply great! But seemed like a missed opportunity as there was no mention of his artist album A1 on CD which I bought in the UK as an import in 2005 and have listened to it at least 10 times in the last few weeks alone! Also recently bought the double vinyl version of A1 with special unmixed versions/edits and would've loved to hear him talk about it (maybe next time!!). I wasn't aware of his early work until about the time when L Want Your Love and FM1 and FM2 came out which are my favourite of his along with the tracks on his A1 album. I'm more into uplifting trance but Scot's work you really cannot ignore! I'll not say anything about his latest work as I don't follow much today but did like Do You Want Me which I bought. And Frank was so right about listening to other genres, totally agree there!

I picked “U” because of it’s 25th anniversary, so that is the main subject of this interview and that’s why I didn’t spoke with him about the album, I’m personally more interested in the stories behind big tracks 😉

Nice one! I heard this track a few times on the radio back in the day. I can imagine that it worked well in the clubs. Because of the name DJ Scot Project I always thought it was from the UK. Now I’ve heard it again I realize that it has this specific, rather heavy German sound. It reminds me of (the non-German) Emmanuel Top - Acid Phase as well :)

Thanks so much! And I would love to talk to Jam El Mar, but if so, it will be most likely about "Stella", maybe one of the Dance 2 Trance tracks and also "Storm". I always focus on originals, since most producers rather talk about their own work, instead of a remix they did for someone else. Plus there are much better stories to tell when it comes to originals. Usually a remix is "just" a remix job, I can't ask too any interesting questions about remixes, so that's why I always focus on originals ;-) Torsten Stenzel is also on my wish list, he did so many great tracks! But.... they both don't live anywhere near me (I'm based in the south of The Netherlands). This vlog is just a hobby for me and I don't have a travel budget. So I can only do interviews with people that live near me or people that visit The Netherlands for shows or so. But.... I really would love to go to Frankfurt for 2 - 3 days to record a few interviews there (like I did last year in London) with some legends. Once I get enough donations via Paypal / Patreon, I can make this happen. So, fingers crossed ;-) Plenty of ideas, but time / money is usually a bit of a problem hehe
