How did someone like Aṅgulimāla, a mass murderer and an evil man, end up becoming a completely liberated arahant?

Dear venerable sir, thank you for the teaching. In my personal experience, as I try to learn to keep the precepts, being honest and taking responsibility feels like death. Sometimes I feel and think to myself, that I must accept death and destruction of my existence to not break the precepts.

Yes, that's how it is. Establishing yourself in Virtue correctly will eventually lead to extinguishment of your sensual-being (kamabhava). At the time that might feel like "death" because it's the only bhava that you know.

@8:50 " ... we need to be more serious with sense restraint, more serious with avoiding distractions ... " This is so true. We are the problem when we are struggling with the dhamma. This is the brutal truth, but the truth regardless.

Bhante, does reminding myself "what I'm about to do is akusala, don't do it" is already consider as acting out of the pressure?
@HillsideHermitage
@HillsideHermitage Год назад
If you are doing it as a mantra regardless of your current intentions, then yes. If you are doing it in order to clarify whether your intentions are kusala/akusala, then it's fine.

Ajahn is there any Arahant in Tipitaka story that has constant physical illness, but not choose to parinibbana immediately, but still endure it for the rest His life for long time.

Theruwansaranai Bhante.... I know this is a very theoretical question but here goes 😅... What about people who were not raised by their biological parents? If they were to commit an anantarika papa kamma and kill those who gave them life, probably would not feel the same regret as someone who was actually raised by their biological parents? Basically does Mother and Father in this context mean - those who raised me, or those who actually gave me my life? Those who I know to be Mother and Father, who occur to my mind with that meaning, or those who I may very possibly not even remember experientially at all but are the cause for my experience here and now?

Makes one wonder, if he would have become an Arahant if he hadn’t been so severe in his wrongful actions

Voropitasutta - Taken Away Aṅguttara Nikāya 6.87 "Bhikkhus, possessing six qualities, even, while listening to the good Dhamma one is incapable of entering upon the fixed course [consisting in] rightness in wholesome qualities. What six? (1) One has deprived One's mother of life; (2) one has deprived one's father of life; (3) one has deprived an arahant of life; (4) with a mind of hatred one has shed the Tathagata's blood; (5) one has created a schism in the Sangha; (6) one is unwise, stupid, obtuse. Possessing these six qualities, even while listening to the good Dhamma one is incapable of entering upon the fixed course [consisting in] rightness in wholesome qualities."

Crux of the issue with Aṅgulimāla becoming an arahant was/is that he casts shade on those whom lack attainment. If a well known serial killer can fulfill the dhamma there is basically no excuse for nearly all people. Hence, Aṅgulimāla will always be controversial and exposing.
