Steven Strogatz, Cornell University Stanislaw Ulam Memorial Lecture Series Lecture 1 Everyone has heard of calculus, but why is it so important? In this story of calculus, Strogatz illustrates the fantastic idea at the heart of calculus - an idea that, in partnership with medicine, philosophy, science, and technology, reshaped the course of civilization and helped make the world modern. It is, Strogatz argues, one of the greatest-ever triumphs of human creativity. 54:52 "Calculus is capturing the trend of reality over a tremendous number of orders of magnitude of space and time and substance and everything and it's based on a lie but it is capturing something true... i think it is very well said by Picasso: 'Art is a lie that makes us realize truth'... so i really do think that is the lesson, that is the story, of calculus." - Steven Strogatz. ..... Commentary: Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! Deeply illustrates the beauty, function, and awe-inspiring place of calculus in enabling humans to not only look ever more deeply into the nature, structure, and essence of reality -- but to participate ever more actively in the co-creation and unfolding of reality! ..... #Calculus; #StoryOfCalculus; #CalculusAndReality; #LanguageOfReality; #LanguageOfGod; #RealityGeneration; #StevenStrogatz; #SantaFeInstitute; #SFI;

His main example of Usain Bolt is unfortunate. I'm afraid this is an example of a mathematician extrapolating about a subject he doesn't know much about. In fact ALL 100 meter runners are slowing down by the end of 100m. A close look at his second data example shows this. In many years of analysis of 100 meter championship runners, track experts know that humans cannot sustain acceleration for 100 meters. Too bad, but a good illustration of theory vs. practice.
