Jared, I sat down to record my next Grandma's Attic and then I asked myself what I thought I was doing. I don't know how to tell a story, not like Jared tells a story. So I put my project on hold and I ran over here, to your channel, to see what you've got going since I was here a week ago. Sure enough, look what I found! I'm listening 'cause you're my inspiration. When I've heard this story, I'll go record mine, and I'll start with the silent reminder ... "Just be honest and tell it like it is, Esther. The way Jared does it." I can't do it like Jared does it, but I'll do it better than if I'd never heard you! God bless!

I love this story and I'm an ex military woman. They was wrong to make him drunk to make him sign up for the War. Dead wrong.

This story should make everyone think. We have some very hard times coming our way. We must be willing to stand with and for our good neighbors. This is how our people lived to have everything they had. Standing in support of the good people around us. Creator provides and stand with us when we do right and help others in our hard times.

I love all of these Appalachia stories. I grew up there but moved away as a teenager without a choice. No matter how much life has gotten in the way i still love hearing all of the old stories from Home!

Got tears in my eyes wonderful story it’s good to hear a story about a boy that didn’t die in the war but live to do good for others. Thank you.

My grandfather was born in 1906, and he was born late for my great grandparents because he had sisters that were 20+ years older than him, and that passed before I was born in 1976. My grandfather lived till I was 21 in 1997. But I have heard stories passed down of my great grandfather as a young man having to help hide livestock all in the rock bluffs here in NW North Carolina. If not the troops would take every bite you had to eat without so much as a thank you.... sounds like this guy was a hero!

All the stories about the civil war that I have ever heard have been heartbreaking. This was heartwarming. I do hope that it was true. I truly believe that it was more of a war at home most times than on the battlefield. The civilian population are the ones who needed the most help. Fighting the everyday life that was the norm and the war and both militaries too. We have so many people to thank for our freedoms besides God and the fighting men.

The war could be really horrendous in the border states, especially in Kentucky. Though Kentucky remained in the union, some of its citizens chose to fight for the Confederacy, whereas others fought for the Union. The results were relatives fighting relatives. It wouldn't be until the Civil War generation died off until the many feuds resulting from the war died down.

I’ve heard of war stories, where soldiers or whoever is fighting would fire their guns, but deliberately avoid killing where they couldn’t deal with killing someone. As long as they shot their guns, it looked like they were shooting at enemies. Of course, this doesn’t fit many’s desire for blood or idea of the hero, where it was best they never told anything about such as they’d be ridiculed, so they remain anonymous. Which there’s some folks that just can’t not take another’s life.

Luke knew right from wrong. He did the only thing a good man could do. He did not want to be in any Army. He was fighting for the rights of others. With Officers, some think their orders must be followed (right or wrong). This happened while I was in the Women's Army Corps. One of the young unmarried women began to look pregnant. There was very little room in those uniforms for any weight gain. She was sent to the Army Hospital where it was confirmed that she was pregnant. She was then questioned about who the father of her baby was. She didn't want to tell; because, she had been ordered by the father not to tell. However, as her discharge paperwork was being processed, she talked. The father of her unborn baby was her boss. A married (with children) Army Officer. He had ordered her to have sex with him. He also ordered her not to tell. He had been taking advantage of her almost everyday since she had been assigned to work in his office. He had made life very hard on her. That was the last time any of us ever saw her. We never knew if the Officer was ever charged with rape or not. After this happened, we were all taught that no man (Officer or not) could order any of us to have sex with him. We were told to tell him, "NO, Sir!", walk away, and report him to the W.A.C. Commander. Even though we were women, we were also GI's (which means Government Issue). All GI's are supposed to take care of, use properly, and protect Government property.

I had a similar miracle happen once. When all odds was against me and it seemed that I would be hurt in a fight very badly, there all at once was my brother Larry, whom I had not seen in years. He was a head taller than me and a lot heavier. He was as big as the man I was about to tangle with. Just before fist was to start flying, I introduced my little brother Larry to this man. Lol, funny to say, that guy cooled off very quick and turn around and left. By the way, that guy stood 6'4" and weighed 240lbs. I only was 5'9" at 165lbs. So like that old preacher and Luke, we know that God Jehovah had his hand in matters. 😀
