I remember when he wrote a DA post complaining that the Aurora shooting was bad because it would ruin The Dark Knight's reputation (this was only about a week after it happened, btw). Truly a pillar of empathy and sensitivity.
The absolute best part of his insult to Zelda Williams was his apology where he said "Oh some people didn't appreciate what I did." I can't tell if he was just salty he got called out or he genuinely did not realize he did something wrong.
@@lightninstriker10 "Some people didn't appreciate what I did"? Appreciate what? Let's be clear. He didn't draw in a 90s anime art style. He WISHES he could. Instead, he drew in a stereotypical 2000s weeb webcomic style. None of the detail, line quality, or proportions of actual anime.
@@leviticusprime4904Nah, he cant draw anime at all. Its more like a weeb art style that looks like the kind of stuff unskilled middle schoolers used to draw.
MovieBob and Dobson would be great friends and agree about 99% of things, but the remaining 1% disagreement would make them bitter enemies until death.
My favorite Dobson story was the one about his job at am airport, he fell asleep on the job, which is one thing, it happens you know? But he fell asleep on the floor, in the middle of the fucking terminal. One of his coworkers found him and woke him up, and Dobson was so offended by this that he went to complain to his boss about it, but he told him he couldn't talk right then because he was in the middle of an important meeting, but Dobson INSISTED, he interrupted the meeting to complain about such petty shit, and his boss was fucking pissed at him for this and Dobsom genuinely doesn't understand what the issue was. The funniest part is that Dobson himself told this story because he thought he was being unjustly persecuted and was trying to farm sympathy
This one alongside Dobson walking into a tabletop game store that was closed because the door was open despite saying closed outside of the store and his bully "sending" a friend request in facebook only for him to fuck up showing Dobson was the one who send the request to his bully meanwhile the bully didn't care about him after all those years, also that guy lives rent free in Dobson's mind because is implied the bully is the main reason that he hates Link having blond hair. Are my favorite stories from him.
One thing to note about Dobson's lesbian fetish; Dobson had met the bandits of a certain tower in one of his playthroughs of Skyrim. The quest starts with a farmer asking the Dragonborn for help with a bandit group, thinking they kidnapped his wife. It turned out the wife was actually the former bandit chief who just returned to the bandit life. She tells the dragonborn to get rid of him, but NOT TO KILL HIM! Dobson was playing a female dragonborn, roleplaying as a lesbian, and decided to kill the farmer because, in his mind, she was being abused and controlled. He even made artwork for the scene that he believes happened, and not, you know, how she would probably react to you killing her husband...
Oh yeah, there's no real happy ending to that scenario. You can lie to the farmer and tell him you didn't find his wife, or tell him that she's dead. Either way, he suffers from false hope or despair. However, it would take a twisted line of logic to come to the same conclusion as Dobson.
@menherakiss It's more common than you'd think. Look at FF14, lots of guys playing scantily clad cat and rabbit girls who want to get it on with other cat and rabbit girls.
The funniest part of the Power Girl photo story was that the photographer who took the pic was the cosplayers boyfriend. Just adds another level of hilarity to the comic
Okay, I was a little willing to believe that maybe she took a picture with the guy and Dobson saw the photographer get shitty with her afterwards because obv comfort can change quickly, but this is the context I needed that makes him definitely an asshole in that situation
Ok, even with the benefit of the doubt there is no way he could just misunderstood. That comic was wishful thinking on his part, some real twisting of reality.
He saw a woman posing for a picture and immediately assumed she was being taken advantage of. His feminism is so bad it literally wraps back around to being sexism
To be honest, I can see why he hated college. Dobson wanted to focus on the more character based stuff, whereas a college will cover a broad range of arts, from watercolours to sculpting, so he probably considered that a waste of his time on what he wanted to focus on. I must confess I was the same, but I dropped out and bough a load of "how to draw" books with my money, then just spammed the hell out of any company that I felt would be interested in my work. Not once was I ever asked what degree I had and got loads of freelance jobs!
What's actually pathetic about dobson, is the fact that unlike other lolcows, he as absolutely no excuses for his failure. He doesn't have terrible parents like Chris Chan, or an extremely screwed up family tree like Cyraxx. He just ruined himself by being absolutely insufferable and hypocritical.
Ironic how Andrew "Get the bike pump" Dobson says he loves Nintendo, the second they say something he doesn't personally approve of such as Peach being Blonde, then he had to throw a tirade making Peach a dimwitted bimbo in response, which is also how he perceives characters and people he doesn't like, especially women he doesn't like. How very Male feminist of him.
@@brianboru2762He got it from the DIC cartoons, whose designs were based on the NES and SNES sprites that had a very limited color pallete, hence ginger/brown haired Peach or "Toadstool". He was also obssesed with Link having brown hair.

Years ago a friend made a Facebook post about the Power Girl photo, which lead to a couple of us making jokes about it in the comments. Now, none of use tagged Dobson. None of us messaged Dobson. None of us KNEW Dobson or were even aware he had a Facebook presence. So imagine our collective surprise, and the hilarity, when he showed up in the middle of our conversation to yell at us and then block us. And that's how we learned he apparently would actively look for people making fun of him online so he could get mad.
Disney didn’t invest more in cgi because treasure planet failed, treasure planet failed because it was an extremely expensive production that disney did not want to succeed. Disney wanted to use less expensive methods of animating than the extremely costly deep canvas they used on most of treasure planet. They released this movie at a date where it was competing with 2 other major disney movies and they barely marketed it at all. Their PR department could sell water to a fish, of course they could have sold a good movie to a willing audience, they just decided not to.
Also because hand drawn animators are unionised with regulations while non-unionised CGI artists can be hired cheap and forced to work overtime to meet deadlines.
And because it was not only dueling in a weekend of packed family movies. with Potter and Clause either out or coming out shortly after, it had to go up against a movie you bet your ass the tweens TP was targeting were lining up for - The Two Towers
Disney invested in cg simply because it was cheaper. They set treasure planet up to fail so they could get it over with to move to cheaper styles of animating.
Some minor things to take note of in regard to Dobson. Half of the art he made about gay men was less for a sake of interest or representation and more as a punchline to a personal joke where two men ending up together is more comical to him, specifically the one picture he made of Mako and Wu where he explained that he saw Mako being with another man as more of a comedic punishment. The second thing to take note of is that his CattyN account was used for him to roleplay as a teenage lesbian and he was also one of the first people online to use the tired phrase of "im literally a minor" whenever he was losing an argument. Its good hes offline ultimately
I doubt he has a bias against gay men, but it's pretty clear that he's nowhere near as progressive as he claimed. He was very clearly just doing it because he liked lesbians and potential female attention.
Jon Musker and Ron Clements fought tooth and nail to get Treasure Planet made since either Lil Mermaid or Aladdin, and they were basically almost forced to make Hercules because Jeffery basically held the chance to make Treasure Planet by a string (but he was later fired during production of that since it was the time he was heavily trying to get the supposed VP position he was promised but acted like an entitled prick during the PR for Lion King and Eisner eventually telling him he wasn't getting the promotion due to his behavior)

One funny little happening was when Dobson "Killed a Giraffe". There was a plugin you could put in your browser that allowed you to draw and put notes on top of webpages, anyone else who had the plugin could see and add-to/change what appeared. Fun little thing, which yes was perfect for clowning around, but to be clear this didn't change the page in any way. Everyone browsing regularly wouldn't see any of it. People who had this plugin started dunking on Dobson adding notes and critiques, or drawing stupid things next to his art. Dobson couldn't take this, so he spent hours of his time constantly monitoring his deviantart pages and erasing anything people put on top of his work. One time a person drew a really nice Giraffe under one of his pages, it wasn't saying anything mean, it was just hanging out being a giraffe. However Dobson still erased it. So for awhile people would go in the comments and call him a giraffe killer. Edit: The plugin was Goggles.
Ohhh yea i remember this. Pretty funny that he goes out of his way to erase troll scribbles from *every single* artwork on his page, which of course nobody but people who had this one plugin is able to see. Big ego dobby-chan had.

The origin of his blue bear character is kinda funny. He'd always draw himself as thin and with a full head of hair. People kept asking him why he does that when hes actually bald and fat. Eventually he got fed up, threw a tantrum, and started drawing himself as a blue bear
My plan would be to make my self-insert much uglier, fatter, balder etc. than me in real life. Then people would be like "oh, you met him? is he really super ugly?" then they'd go "nah, he's just kind of average."

I don't know how much of that is one leading to the other. Like, if it was that everyone dressed that way so logically most people on CA looked like that, or because everyone CA looked like that, people who wanted to be on Channel Awesome were emulating the people who were already there.
Yeah it was just how the outcast neurodivergent nerds and geeks looked at the time. (I say that as one of them). The people with the know how to build a web site and post digital video online, at a time when all this was new. As the Internet got more mainstream, the barrier to entry went down a lot more diverse people started creating content. And of course the best looking people always become the most popular, leaving the nerds of old to be forgotten. That's pretty much where we're at today.
The best part about drawing Steven Universe in the style of Leiji Matsumoto? He thought Leiji was a woman, and refused to change his belief when someone pointed out otherwise.
I like how the inflation fetish was foreshadowed throughout the video. Slowly building up paranoia in the audience, before the monster finally shows itself
You can say there’s an overall inflating sense of unease through the entire video, only expanding further and further until the final climactic burst of reveal :)
When making Calvin & Hobbes, Bill Watterson actually modeled Calvin to be sorta his polar opposite, a decision that made him such a fun character for Watterson to write. Meanwhile I can't imagine strawman comic artists being anything more than miserable

Another funny thing is that on Kiwifarms they localized Dobson's family house which was big and had a pool. Dobson was a straight white man from rich family. The one of the people he hated most.
Dobson once implied that people who complained about Mary Jane’s hair color changing in a new Spider-Man movie were shallow. Keep in mind he was notorious for complaining that Link’s hair changed from brown in the early NES games to blonde in the newer titles
He was even blonde in the original Japanese box art. The only reason it was brown on the NES was due to to palette restrictions. A similar case with Princess Peach in Mario 2 and 3.
@@Mikewee777 Although I do wonder why they gave him pink hair in LTTP, as the SNES had a much more expansive palette than the NES (15 colors per sprite rather than 3).

that probably never happened. Dobbie made a few last attempts at kickstarter and monetization that failed and in the aftermath of that he just rage quitted.
Dobson ironically got the best ending any lolcow can, leaving the internet behind. He had some talent but he completely squandered his potential by being overly attached to one art style to the point that he never improved, it's likely this is the reason why he never broke into the animation industry, however his fragile ego meant he was also not cut out for being a public figure either. It's everyone's dream to be able to turn your hobby into your career, but for him it was just never going to work out. I'm also surprised you didn't mention the "imagine being so fat you look at computers and see food" comic Dobson made, since that was a somewhat notable controversy that he like moviebob insisted PCs were bad compared to apple macs and bing bing wahoo consoles.
Ok, I had NO IDEA about him making that insensitive joke towards Zelda Williams. That’s literally the first time any, and I mean, ANY RU-vid video has caused me to cartoon-style drop my jaw like that. What a hell of an experience this video was, props to you man!
Oh, that's the tip of the iceberg. Dobson once drew a comic dubbed "Squid Comic" where he complained about having to reference a bad event that happened whenever he wanted to talk about something good, because a talking Squid told him he had to because "It's the Internet" It was a week after the Aurora Colorado Theater Shooting, he was upset that the news was still covering it, he was upset that people were offering their condolences to the victims of the shooting, and that he felt like he had to be a decent human being when he wanted to talk about his experience watching The Dark Knight Rises because people online told him he should at least offer his sympathy.
@@henrynelson9301 Andrew really only thought about himself, he doesn't care or empathize with other people. Remember the Charlie Hebdo shooting? Because he was all "I'm afraid that what I will do will get me killed", no one cares about your art mistakes, they hate your terrible attitude. If anything, that would be what gets his ass kicked. Yeah. What's even more concerning is that instead of everyone gets angry at Dobson for his insensitive jokes on Robin William's death, he ends up getting laughed at.
Blaming treasure planet for the resulting firing of a whole bunch of animators is kinda stupid given that in reality its because animation artists were unionised thus they had more rights and disney had to pay them a reasonable wage compared to the then budding CG animation which had no unionisation and ultimately was just an excuse to get rid of a bunch of animators.
Yes, but liberals don't like to think about how corporate greed hurts the working classes-they only want to talk about how "privileged" the working classes are and how "oppressed" the corporations are.
Also, it wasn't Disney's last 2D movie that decade; if anything, you'd probably be blaming Home on the Range for the failure to bring in people to the box office, but even that's false, because The Princess and the Frog came out in *2009*.
if you want to blame a singular movie for 2D animation dying, blame the Rugrats movie for starting a trend of straight to video 2D animated movies. theres a very good rebel taxi video about it

It’s crazy because a lot of Lolcows are told that if they just leave the internet the trolls will disappear and they’re like “NOOOO WHAT ABOUT MY FANS :(“ (think Cyraxx, Chris, Daniel Larson, etc.). Dobson took the advice one time and he went from being one of the biggest clowning targets online to an obscure footnote in the span of a couple years.

My biggest Dobson memory was him drawing a comic complaining about how he had to reference bad events when he wanted to talk about something he liked because a talking Squid told him to do it "because it's the internet" _It was a week after the Aurora Colorado Theater shooting and Dobson was upset that it was still being covered and people expected him to express sympathy to the victims of the tragic event during his personal review of the film._ *"UGH Why do I **_have_** to say anything about the shooting victims a week after it happened? It's a week ago, get over it! **_I'm_** the victim here!"*
Pretty much. The powers at the time set the standard that 3D was just the new thing and no questions, peasants. It also is much easier to make a character model and mocap over it or something than painstakingly draw frame by frame in full inks and paints. 2D animation made Disney, but the executives of the mid-00s to now, have slowly forgotten where they came from.
@@bhendri31 Exactly. People keep repeating this weird claim like it's fact, even when you can easily look up the budget and all the advertising for this movie online. Disney isn't in the business of losing money on purpose, especially not in service of their competition, considering Shrek was in theaters at the time.
Dobson is one of those lolcows on the internet that just fascinates me because he had everything going for him. At one point everything seemed to be going very well for the guy. His ego, his hubris, his inability to take criticism, and his willingness to piss people off for no reason other than because he wanted to feel smug and better than other people ruined every bit of success he had ever gained. Seriously, during the height of his Deviantart days, he could have leveraged his internet popularity, worked with a writer to improve his comic ideas, focused on positivity, taken criticism, and not been lazy and I have no doubt he'd be successful today. Maybe not rich or anything - more like that guy whose art we recognize - but still successful. Hell, he had a stint on RU-vid about animation history and techniques that was pretty interesting to watch too and if he brushed up on his editing, presentation skills, and people skills he could have had a decent side gig as an animation reviewer and talk about animation techniques and history.
People tend to not realize how good they have it and it often takes losing it for them to understand that. Stepping on the toes of his brother and costing him his job might've been the final moment that made Dobson realize just what he has been doing this entire time and what he has lost in the end... I don't know if that's the case, but I like to think he reformed willingly rather than reluctantly. It's only going to be worse for everyone involved if you still can't comprehend the consequences of your actions and what they've turned you into all these years later.
People obsessed with making gay characters of the opposite sex is so weird to me lol. Vivziepop is notorious for this too. I dont necessarily think it is wrong or immoral but I hate when they try to act like their interest is actually progressive and not just because the idea of two women/two men together is attractive.
Another thing that should be mentioned about Dobson is that he had a weird fixation on blondes and blonde guys specifically, which is why a lot of the blonde characters he drew were depicted as dim-witted or bullies. Apparently he was bullied by a blonde kid in school and never got over it.
I mean, I kinda get it I was once stabbed by a kid with down syndrome, and I spent the next decade of my life advocating for lobotomies (mostly my teen years, I was less than 9 when the incident happened)
I was on the EDF during the Metroid commission. It was intentionally and specifically done to compare it against a piece he'd done in his college years that was much better, much more detailed, and honestly a really great work.
The EDF thread on Dobson was a phenomenal ride. Pretty sure Dobs also didn't do the commissioner's last requests for fixes before finally calling it done and just tossed the "finished" piece at them. His early college (and I think even high school era) work was definitely more raw- I always felt like he lost his love for art after a time and just treated it like something he HAD to do as opposed to something he wanted to.
The stonetoss comic about predators being in camouflage, it gives a few examples of animals, then the last panel is a male feminist. I feel that comic still rings true.
Fun story about Dobson: Dobby made numerous comic books and had them printed up so he could put them up for sale on his website. He didn't sell a lot (if any) so he decided to give them away to his aunt so she could hand them out for free to her co-workers and relatives and in that way, give him some publicity. She ended up donating them all to Goodwill who had them all burned because they didn't realize it "was a professional comic" lmao. Another fun story: Dobby is to this day a virgin because him and his one college girlfriend had a snuggleless relationship. He only became a feminist because he thought it would get him some action (it didn't).
@@twinzzlers He tried to deal with it in the best way he could think off. He was even thirsting for some SJW land w h a l e on twitter who made you-know-what vids with other men until she blocked him.
I gotta be honest here. It still baffles me to this day that people see the problem with such weird guys and so many other just like him in being a VIRGIN itself, as if that was the crux of the issue and not their massively disgusting personalities and lack of character by themselves. From when I was still a relatively young dude in my early twenties that just HAPPENED to be a virgin still aswell all the way up to nowadays not much has really changed about me personality-wise. I mean, I'm still basically the same guy I was when I was a 22 year old virgin, I'm just me. On the other hand tho, I get it tho - maybe we'll just need to find a better despricptive word for people like this, instead of just calling them "virgin"? Incel? I don't know. Yet I just find it strange how there is so much stress put on young males, such a push for them to lose their v-card, so much importance put on male virginity. Why is that? Did I magically gain some kind of respect by society and the whole world on the night I lost my virginity? Hahaha, I wish! My point being that I've meet really cool chill virgin guys and also non-virgin guys that act just like the "typical male virgin" probably all of us get a picture of in our heads when we hear things like "HE's a VIRGIN".
Some more fun factoids about the man: - he claimed to have developed legitimate PTSD from the water spray incident - he supposedly had a serious situation with a coworker at his airport job because they accidentally spoiled one of the Harry Potter movies that was coming out at the time due to having read the book, which had obviously come out years prior. - he had a massive boner for Apple products and saw them as straight up superior to their counterparts and not just another brand. One of his most famous comics is a Mac vs PC piece where he makes a food analogy where a broken down PC is junk food while the Mac is healthy vegetables. It's funny considering his love of McDonalds and his let's say, portly figure. - the video does not do justice regarding just how utterly ANAL he was about characters not looking and acting like their DiC cartoon counterparts. It was the one thing he criticized Nintendo for. He did not relent about this throughout his entire career.
His mac shilling gets even better. He later backpedaled on that one infamous “looking at computers and seeing food” comic, basically giving very flimsy excuses for how it was totally all ironic, and making fun of tech rivalry somehow. Also the Mac he stuck with was from 2008. He literally bragged about running Skyrim at 10 FPS, because “fuck 60 FPS elitism” in his words. and then when undertale came out, he couldn’t even launch it.
Maybe that's why his art style never really evolved. Characters can only look the way he wants them to look. Why listen to what other people have to say?
@@theotherjared9824 you can really see it with the blue bear. He was so focused on being bitter and petty in the comic, that he just gave this tiny cartoon bear like all this detail on the face, in the wrong way, it is just uncanny and unappealing.
I love two edits made to that compyutta comic, I forgot what the top dialogue was, but the bottom two panels had the dialogue changed so lazily that it just ran over the both of them. The edited dialogue was: Imagine being so fat that you look at computers and you see food However, due to how it was set up, another edit removing all but the bottom left panel made it say "imagine being at computers" Still funny.
the more i watched this video the more i realized dobson was only special for the late 2000s 2010s internet because most of this is the description of the modern twitter artist
he was definitely a product of his time- the fact there are slews of online personas akin to him (and other notable Lolcows from the 00's) today is kind of depressing ngl
Because having month's long breakdowns over children's media was seen as laughable back then. Now there's thousands of people doing the same thing on social media.
Great video overall! But there’s one question that’s not addressed: “Why is he suddenly a blue care bear?” At one point, he made a comic ranting about people not liking a recent change in his self-insert. He doubled down by changing it again to a blue care bear, and saying he won’t go back to the human design until people stop complaining. He never went back to the human design.
Honestly, if he wasn't so ridiculed and lol cow-y, this response could've been a based interaction with his community that would get a laugh and get memed and stuff.
I feel somewhat sorry for Dobson, but he brought his misfortune down on himself. I first came into contact with him at his peak popularity and people told him that he needs to work on his art, but he wouldn't listen cause he felt high and mighty. You can't believe how utterly toxic he'd be and to say Dobson would treat a "Your art sucks, kys" the same as legit well-intentioned attempts to help him improve is a complete understatement. Tell him you love his art and at best, he'd ignore you, at worst he even make some snide comments. Tell him his art could be improved by not shading with layers of black and he'd spend the next _day_ calling you a poophead. This attitude made him also incredibly easy to troll, given that Dobson's reaction was akin to kicking a beehive. Dobson was _never_ thankful for his fans. I think the humble success he had as an artist on dA went to his head. Anyone not kissing his ass was not a true fan to him. Fans should also mindlessly cheer for the object of their adoration (ie: Dobson) unconditionally. *They* should be happy, *he* deigned to draw a few pieces of art. Little surprise a lot of fans gave up on him over time and became haters. I've been keeping tabs on this guy for quite some time and saw a _lot_ of his downfall happen in slow motion... but the craziest thing about it was always the fact that _EVERYONE_ was warning him. Even 4chan. Everyone told him, he needed to improve his art, his writing, his attitude, but he never did and here we are. But I have to disagree with one point raised in this video: Dobson's art didn't stagnate, it actually devolved over time. In the early 2000s, his art wasn't mind-blowing, but it was actually pretty promising. But Dobson settled for "good enough" and later on with "good enough _for my fans"_ and that's when you see a long-winded downturn over the next years. He never could draw hands, let alone hands holding items, but over time, he got worse. Ultimately, he sucked at inking, he sucked at coloring, he sucked at shading, he sucked at drawing poses, he sucked at composition... The mind-blowing part is that when you look at his history, he _should_ have been a very good artist, given his long time as a comic artist, his degree from that art school, his heyday as an early webcomic artist... and then you look at his art. Dobson being incredibly toxic aside, a lot of his early fans just found better webcomics. Ones with better art, better writing, better schedule and so on. Dobson could have had it all, but he snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, just by being himself.
Gonna be real, I've commissioned my fair share of art, and $45 for a fully colored and shaded piece is a pretty cheap price, even considering inflation (heh). Especially when it's from someone like Dobson, who had a fair amount of actual internet fame behind him and official partnerships with other e-celebs like Brentalfloss. A picture like that can cost you up to hundreds of dollars depending on who you're commissioning. And 4 months isn't an _awful_ amount of time to complete a work. Artists have other things going on, like jobs, family, completing other commissions that were paid for earlier, etc. Now I'm not saying this means Dobson had a great or even acceptable work ethic, as I don't know if anything was going on in his life that would take his time, but it's not an automatic mark against him. There's a few things I'm surprised you didn't touch on. Like, for instance, he would blame anyone and anything else for his artistic failures (when he admitted them). According to him, all his teachers sucked, maliciously had it out for him, and sabotaged his artistic education. He also blamed his love of anime as a child for hampering his own artistic progress ("I watched anime as a kid, therefore I'm stuck drawing anime style forever"). Also, despite being a complete geek into geeky things like anime and video games, he considered the tabletop gaming community as nothing but a bunch of fat, sweaty, unhygienic, angry losers. I think the biggest thing, though, is (if I remember correctly) how he left the inflation art fetish community. He basically posted one of his typical rants, pointing fingers at everyone, hurling lots of insults and blame, and basically burning every single bridge he ever had there. Which, if you're trying to erase your presence in that community from internet history and be completely forgotten, is probably one of the worst things you can do. To me, Dobson is most likely a legitimate narcissist. He believes he's always right, won't take criticism, belittles anyone with contradicting views and opinions, blames anything but himself for his problems, will do wrong and twist logic to say it isn't actually wrong (tracing Big Ben), doesn't really care about the feelings of others (his Jewish girlfriend incident/what he tweeted to Zelda Williams), and is ultimately self-serving even when claiming to be acting for the benefit of others. Honestly, despite leaving the internet, I doubt he really accepts responsibility for his brother's lost job opportunity. He probably blames all the people he was toxic too, as _they_ were the ones that led him to be toxic, obviously.
Dobson's biggest flaw was in inability to read the room. I was baffled when he drew a picture of jasmine from aladdin but with white skin. Anyone else who did that, I would call racist. To partially quote the onion's "the sex house", to call dobson evil is to imply a clarity of purpose I do not wish to attribute to him.
People don't criticize Andrew Dobson because he has no talent. People criticize Andrew Dobson because he has a lot of talent but even more complacency to waste all of it.
What an unfortunate legacy for Dobson, what sucks more is knowing his actions had consequences on his brother, so it's kinda weird in a way knowing his family stepped in to stop him, but it's probably for the best that he stayed away from the internet for good.
I'm questioning the mental gymnastics on how this guy blames anime ruining treasure planet, which cost him a job he never had nor applied for. There's plenty of other studios he could've worked for, but seemed obsessed with just working for Disney.
@@demanic6159 That. He could've done just that and had a steady career but figured "if it's not a movie, then what's the point". Hell, he still could've tried to get work as a story board artist/character designer. Those are options that still made use of 2d art or he really wanted to try, he could've gone back to school to learn vfx.
Dobson claim that he never got work as an animator because Disney stopped making 2D animated films, and yet 2D animated television remained very much a thing. This leads me to believe that 2 possible things happened. 1. He was so set on getting a job animating Disney movies specifically that he never tried getting jobs at any other studios. or 2. Studios wouldn't hire him because he's a hack. These options are not mutually exclusive.
He also claimed that his college was "worthless" for getting an industry job, despite fellow famous internet artist Andrew Chesworth going through the same art program at the same college and getting a job at Disney specifically. That man has literally no one to blame for his lack of career movement other than himself.
The fact that Dobson just up and vanished one day like a balloon into the sky (heh) is so fascinating to me, usually with these types of people you’ll find out they just rebranded themselves and moved onto some other community to make an ass of themselves in, but the fact nobody has found any sort of new Dobbo activity in years is genuinely surprising, even if the brother theory is true (especially since he’s still hosting the desolate SYAC website)
From what I hear, he posts from time to time. It's something he does. But he never sticks around for long because he might get recognized and he doesn't showcase his art.
This is what all lolcows did before society became completely shameless and they figured out they’d still have an audience no matter what they do unless banned from every platform. Which social media will never do because they are zionists and only ban political speech, not scams and literal criminal behaviour.
Dobson has always been one of the most fascinating internet figures because literally nothing was holding him back except himself. He had all these amazing opportunities and even legitimate popularity from time to time. Hell, his pre-2010s art wasn't even that bad and probably could have developed really well if he didn't let it deteriorate really badly during and after SYAC. But every single time, he would squander his luck and privilege because he just couldn't stop being an entitled, belligerent asshole towards literally everyone for two seconds.
Poor Zelda, kinda horribly ironic that her father worked in Disney movies, but our L white knight wanted to work for Disney, and treated her like that. I dare say that it’s twice as horrible because her dad had named her after princess Zelda because he adored the series. Kinda made me want send her fruit to say sorry.
Not only that, but telling a woman "calm your tits" seems to really be at odds with the kind of progressive message Dobson would be sending out there, ya know?
@@arandompasserby7940 This only convinces me that most of the people pushing for that kind of progressive message aren't trustworthy at all, especially since Dobson is far from the only one who's like that. What happened to sticking to your principles?

@margarinesnatcher no I've heard the sexist argument from making Samus take orders from a man to making her having daddy issues both of which made no sense.
@margarinesnatcherOther M's depiction of Samus contrasted greatly with peoples perception of the character from previous games. Before, Samus was a strong battle hardened warrior who took no sh!t from anyone. In Other M however she's sort of bland and focuses a lot on her femininity, a trait no other game felt the need to focus on. Before her gender was sort of a non-factor of her character, she was a badass thst just happened to be a woman, but Other M just beats you over the head with the fact Samus is a woman, making constant allegories about motherhood and her obsession with "The Baby" (The Metroid larva from Super Metroid, the previous game chronologically.) Many people saw this as a degradation of the character, boiling her down to her basic traits and ultimately inferior to her previous depictions.
@margarinesnatcherThe Golden Bolt has a good video on Other M that goes into the greater criticisms of the game, including Samus's contentious depiction. I'd also recommend The Geek Critiques' Other M video, he has a pretty good section on Samus' character in that as well, and explains things better than I probably could.
@margarinesnatcher Eh, I don't know that T2 is an apt comparison. Yes that movie does focus a lot on Sarah Connor and her relationship with her son John, but it also shows her to be a competent fighter and doesn't rely on anyone else (except maybe begrudgingly the T-800), and the love she has for her son doesn't hold her back, if anything it empowers her to move forward and fight for a better future for him and everyone. I can't really comment on Alien 2, since I haven't seen any of the Alien movies, a sin I'm sure since I'm a Metroid fan and Alien is one of the series' most direct inspirations.
@margarinesnatcher for the record, I'm not against the Metroid series exploring other aspects of Samus' character, in fact Fusion did exactly that, before Other M did. Samus is basically suffering from PTSD in that game after nearly dying to the X Parasite, that games big bad. The game makes it apparent that the experience affected her in a way no battle she's fought ever had before, she gets pretty introspective about her life up to that point, and the whole game she's basically working towards regaining her strength and confidence until she can defeat the very same parasites that nearly gave her an unceremonious death. Other M can be almost considered a 3D remake of Fusion, as it uses a lot of the same ideas as Fusion but executes them a lot worse. Samus is similarly introspective in Other M, but her Pros are long-winded amd bloated and often don't really relate to the current situation that well. She's also put in a similar situation at the beginning where she's lost her confidence, but there's never really a point where it feels that she's earning it back, she's just kind of going through the motions. And at the center of this probably Other M's most contentious aspect, Samus' relationship with Adam, her former C.O. from her military days and the man she has to take orders from throughout the game. Samus' relationship with Adam is heavily implied to be a romantic one from Samus' perspective, and as a result she tends to make stupid decisions based that, and is very compliant with Adam's orders. The infamous example if this in the game is when you're sent into a very hot area in the game and are forced to take chip damage because Samus will not activate her heat-protection until Adam-senpai gives her the go ahead to do so. The game is littered with moments like this, where Samus won't use one of her many useful power up's because Adam hasn't authorized it. I've heard this could be Samus just being Maliciously compliant, but the game never seems to imply this being the case as Samus doesn't show any malice towards Adam, despite Adam clearly holding Malice towards Samus. Adam is almost constantly talking down to Samus throughout the game, clearly doesn't respect her or her accomplishments, and there's never a point where Adam's position is challenged. This is why people hate Other M and Consider it sexist, Samus was turned was turned into a walking doormat and willingly takes orders from a man that has no respect for her. In Fusion, Samus is also taking orders, from an A.I. based on Adam no less, but the game makes it clear that Samus is begrudgingly doing this. She doesn't really have any choice but to take orders since she nearly died and is in a severely weakened condition. However, as she gains her strength back, she gains back agency, the orders she recieves being more "suggestions" to her, ultimately having to find her own path separate from the one she was intended to take. By end game she even convinces the A.I. to stop blinly giving orders and work with her to wipe the X Parasites off the face of the galaxy. Fusion's Samus may be a weakened Samus, but she's still Samus, capable of overcoming the odds through her intuition and experience, and ultimately doesn't need someone to order her around. Other M doesn't just fail because it tried to take a deeper look into the character of Samus, it fails because Fusion proved it could be done well and fell short of its standard.
as an internet degenerate who banks on fetish porn, dobson's inflation stuff is not half bad, and that's an issue, the fact that his fetish work looked way better than anything else he drew clearly shows where his intentions lie. i bet that if at one point he started to get commissioned for what he actually wanted to draw, he would have taken it and not only over-deliver, but his frail ego woul see it as blood money, and i don't know if that would have been a better fate for him.
Honestly I'd have way more respect for him if he just came out and said that he was horny and wanted to draw stuff like that instead of masking behind social justice or whatever

You can say Dobson has an... inflated sense of ego!!! Every time Dobson gets mild criticism, he likes to... blow it out of proportion!!! Dobson can be described as a very... larger than life person!!!
As an artist, and a SENIOR in art school, it kills me when online artists have these massive followings (even if they’re being mostly hatefollowed, lol) and they just.. don’t improve. My art has improved SO much from when I was a freshman, and it’s because I was given critique and guidance! I’m even a webcomic artist myself (mostly Webtoon) and I’m just like.. amazed at how stuck in time this dude’s art is. It’s nostalgic in a bad way 😅
I can feel you there. I've been doing wherever I can to improve my art stuff and trying to get better as much as I can. It's fun to look back and see how far you've gotten. Those followings you mentioned can be a bit demoralizing to see.
And this should serve as a lesson for all of us. Dobson refused to accept criticism so he refused to improve. Criticism is not an attack on the person (even when its author just wanted the attack). Criticism is an opportunity to ward off stagnation.
I'll never understand how artists that try to hide their NSFW and fetishes never just realize that it's a hopeless endeavor. If people are motivated/curious enough, and especially if you use the same artstyle for both accounts, people are gonna find out. And usually, you'll get clowned on more than if you were just upfront about it. Same deal with AnimatedJames.
It's easier to own it and just say "hey listen I have some NSFW stuff under this name, but we don't mix the two, okay?" But that is easy to say in a vacuum.
@@SerphSheff Had a DeviantArt account where he drew fart fetish art with Sonic characters/his OCs. Got found out a couple years back and he nuked/abandoned most of his socials after.
It's crazy how he blew up not once but twice over his stupid Starwars comics. I don't even think most of the defenders of that comic were aware of his escapades lol.
In complete fairness, you really can't criticize him for using licensed characters in his art and selling it because artists do this for a living ALL THE TIME. Go to any convention and you'll see artist prints of fictional characters.
You can get the rights for selling specific fan made merch of ficcional characters You need to contact the brand, and there are even agencies who help you do that.
@@Let_Toons Most convention artists don't do this though. It's a morally grey area that studios / rights holders and such generally turn a blind eye to. Basically if you make art of a property and make prints / merch of it to sell at a convention, they turn a blind eye because it would do more harm to their PR for them to send a cease & desist letter than it's worth to protect their copyright. But if you go and sell that same stuff online, you're more likely to get said letter - because there's evidence of it they can't ignore, and if they DO ignore it they risk losing their copyright. Not every case is like this of course, but that's generally how it is for artists selling prints at conventions.
@@diegodunn-humphrey512 Yes. Because so long as you're not posting it online, they don't know. And if they don't know, they can use the defense of ignorance if their copyright was ever challenged that way. They've demonstrated that they take action when they DO know, so clearly "infractions" at conventions only happen because they don't know, and they can't be expected to send representatives to every convention to check and see if anyone is selling unlicensed merch. Source: Some lawyers who did a panel about this very subject at a convention I attended.
The common explanation for him quitting the Internet is a little heavier than his relatives citing his brother allegedly losing a job by association as a reason he should stop his antics. Really, when has he ever been that reasonable or empathetic? The full narrative is that Dobbo the Clown, being a failure in every sense of the word, was/is still financially dependent on his fossilizing parents despite being on the wrong side of 40, and they threatened to cut him off if he didn't stop melting down online. Ultimately his allowance for buying Switch games was more important than railing at the digital heavens.
Counterpoint: He left and never returned. That means Dobson actually learned from a mistake and thus as long as he never returns, is no longer a lolcow
@@fabiomgm1293 I mean that's still a.good move. It's no longer "look at me THE Andrew dobson" now he's just some guy on the internet. A bit of a growth in ego control which is a glimmer of hope

@@drewbakka5265 sure it is-he just didn't do it. His family forcibly removed him. It's the difference between "stayed home" and "placed under house arrest".
It fascinates me how Dobson and Moviebob are the only lolcows that I know that their failures are completely theirs, you can argue that Chris Chan is the way he is because Barbara and Bob failed him and the decades of online harassment definitely sent him over the edge but, Dobson not only had a stable childhood but he also went to a very prestigious college but he dropped out because of his own ego. Chris will never change because he doesn't have the mental capacity to but Dobson doesn't because he's too egocentric to
Even Moviebob seems to have mellowed out following the Lindsay Ellis incident (especially after she was cancelled). I just checked his RU-vid, and he still makes movie reviews with a few thousand views (very small but consistent amount). Hopefully, Dobson has matured since going offline.
Yeah. Dobson gets a bittersweet ending. He finally leave the Internet as what his family suggested to and hasn't been heard of for a few years, but the Internet still never forgets his legacy of blunders that made him infamous in the first place. It's unfortunate that he had the potential with his artistic talents, but his inflated (no pun intended) ego and his questionable behavior really gets the best of him.
@@knightshade2654 I heard that Lindsay Ellis posted new videos, but it's on another site called Nebula. (I just checked to see if she's still active and surprise surprise, she made a post on her community tab 2 months ago with a new novel).

I don't know if me being a kirby fan means I'm a Nintendo fan. But when ever I see those Nintendo fanboy comics, I just feel constant dread seeing them. Ugh -_-
Same I'm a huge Nintendo fan and nostalgic too, I even love their obscure experimental stuff like BOXBOY! and Kururin (also currently hyperfixated on Rhythm Heaven as I type) But I would never go that far, to defend the company itself so hard Especially since Nintendo sure as Hell doesn't return such favors anyway, since they ignore their fans when they criticize them and harass using DMCA takedowns when they show labor of love
Y’know I actually don’t mind the guy’s early art. It’s amateurish sure, but it has charm. He wears his Rumiko Takahashi influence on his sleeve, which I can’t hate him for (My pfp is Ranma Saotome, after all). I think his art got progressively worse the more he tried to distance himself from his earlier influences without actually improving his skills.
I'd say his early drawings had a certain charm to them, it was a weird mixture between Rumiko Takahashi and comic strips like Garfield, for some reason. If he had improved he could have invented a unique artstyle, kind of like some modern cartoons, but later he practically tried to downplay his anime influences I still remember that drawing he made where his original characters beat up famous anime/manga characters like Goku, Naruto, Lum, Pikachu, etc. He was that angry at anime being popular Edit: at 11:17 there's a shot of Andrew's DA post about his "West vs. East" picture
Using Takahashi as a springboard is honestly a good choice if you're honest about adapting an anime/manga style. Better than Toriyama in some respects.
I do get the criticism of how he just seems to fail to have any semblance of space awareness. Like, I know it's hard, but at least sketch that stuff out before you draw it properly!
Dobson seems to pick and choose which part of the 90s anime he talks about, there were dark edgy anime in the 90s like Akira, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, Fist of the Northstar, Dragon Ball Z, etc. Dude just thinks because of the 2000s, Disney became edgy
i would like to point out as an artist- tracing isn't all that bad, so long as you make it your own. tons of artists have done it in the past, including disney animators, because frankly some stuff is just *not* worth drawing by hand. that said, dobson's incorporation of tracing is poorly implemented yes, but tracing itself is not a bad thing to do.
Right. Sometimes to get a pose or object just right you need to trace, and also I think it helps to get the hang of drawing certain things. That being said, it'd be kinda scummy to trace and pass it off as your own straight up. Ideally, if you do trace something, use the original trace as a base and then apply your own style to it, thus now making it a reference moreso than a trace. At least that's how I see it 😊
I think the saddest (or funniest, depending on your take of this) part about Dobson is that not even the inflation/expansion community ever really liked him. Every degenerate artist has some diehard stands, he had literally nobody.
As someone with really weird fetishes, I can confirm this. People like me tend to find their artist, and stick to him, possibly commission him Dobson was such an ass, the only audience he would get, is of people telling him to fuck off from the platform, or touch grass.
Not even only such case. His hatred for new anime is also (in addition to his delusions about it harming american animation) motivated by him being in his college's anime club (he claims he was it's leading figure) and he took it as a personal insult that other members of the club wanted to watch new anime instead of just sticking with 80s-90s kid's anime.
