The Story of Dread Pirate Roberts 

Years ago I was at a science fiction convention. One of the vendors was selling a t-shirt that said on the front "I am the Dread Pirate Roberts No. 3,124". On the back it said "Inquire about franchise opportunities in your area".

It's actually not a bad scheme, if you think about it. A succession of pirate leaders gets to have their day and retire happily.

Remember, the Dread Pirate Robert's is reported to never take prisoners so, the majority of the people he encounters never live to describe his looks, voice, height, etc.

When I watch this scene I'm always impressed by how smooth Wesley (Cary Elwes) is when he picks her up and continues the story as he carries her across the tree log. While Robin Wright may not weigh that much, doing that over multiple takes while delivering his lines would have required a good deal of stamina.

The whole Dread Pirate Roberts thing sounds like a very convoluted yet very effective Pyramid Scheme.

When I saw this scene I thought, "No wonder it's Dread Pirate Roberts as opposed to Dread Pirate Robert."

This whole scene upped most girls expectations of a guy 😂

That story alone is one of the things that made this movie great. The idea of a famous pirate actually being a series of men who've passed down the title building on a legend is pretty cool. It's like "the phantom" only it doesn't suck.

Gotta admit, the name Dread Pirate Roberts just rolls off the tongue smoothly. They created a neat character and lore in such a silly movie.

"My name is Ryan" LOL

"The real Roberts retired 15 years, been living like a King in Patagonia. Thank you."

I love the little "thank you" without breaking the stride of his story when she moves the hanging vines out of his face at

“On the set of The Princess Bride, André the Giant once ‘let out a 16-second fart and brought production to a standstill.’ Nobody said anything except director Rob Reiner, who said ‘Are you OK, André?’ to which André replied, ‘I am now, boss.'”

"My name is Ryan." LOL

The fact that Westley became so skilled in swordplay, strength and strategy in only five years speaks to how great of a teacher his Robert’s was and so on and so forth.

You know, hidden behind the silliness and comedy of this movie are some pretty ingenious ideas... for example these 2 minutes of exposition could have been the premise for an entire movie.

When you know the dread pirate Roberts is a reference to a real pirate, Bartholmew Roberts (or black bart/Barti Ddu). And you know he was Welsh. And Patagonia is one of the few places in the world that has Welsh speaking communities outside of Wales. The subtle attention to detail is just 🤯❤️

"You see, no one would surrender

“This will all soon be but a happy memory, as Robert’s ship Revenge is anchored at the far end, and I, as you know, am Roberts.” This line always makes me laugh, Cary says it so matter of fact.

Westley is just so darn positive.
