This is the first video of a new series in which I will chronicle and share my experiences as an OT, starting with OT school and everything in between until present day. I'm excited (and nervous) to share this with y'all. Stay safe and I'll see you in the next video :)

One benefit of this quarantine business is I've had a lot of opportunities to look for OTs making content online! What a time to be alive... Anyway, I really appreciate that you've shared your story about getting into school. I'm changing careers completely, going from a hospitality based career back into healthcare. I won't be applying to schools until next year, but I'm definitely feeling anxious about getting all my prereqs done in time. My undergrad required basically no science courses and the ones I did need, I took a long long long time ago so I'm doing them over. I definitely feel that pressure to get things done and to apply next year because I'm feeling very stagnant and can't stand the thought of waiting another year because I didn't get my Labs taken or wasn't able to get my observation hours in - we need 80 for the schools here in California. Thanks again for sharing and I'm looking forward to more of this series! - Katie

Hi Arwen! I loved hearing your story. I just got accepted at University of Tennessee HSC. It was a very overwhelming process that’s for sure! I was also wait listed for about week (which was very surprising). We begin in January & I’m excited and nervous for the workload! I look forward to watching your other videos!

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I have only applied to one school so far (it’s pretty much the only one in my state) and I’m so anxious to hear back from them mid-March! I am also engaged and planning my wedding for November of 2021 (over thanksgiving break). I know I kind of put all my eggs in one basket at the moment 😂 but fingers crossed I get in this cycle. I’m so excited!! 🤞

I just found your channel and it’s been such a help to me! I’m 29, also have a bachelor’s in psych, and strongly considering pursuing a Master’s in OT. I’d love to hear about the different settings you have worked in. Do you feel like you’ve found your niche within the field of OT or would you like to try different settings? I’d also like to hear your take on work/life balance in this profession. Thanks for taking time to share your experiences!

Were to start! I definitely feel like I have found a niche in pediatric therapy. I would have a difficult time transitioning to work with adults again in rehab or skilled nursing settings but it wouldn’t be IMpossible. I have my ups and downs with work life balance. Some months and weeks its great and other times it feels like I’m drowning. But that is mostly due to my own inefficiency and lots of unnecessary paperwork that is required. I do believe that in any job it takes personal responsibly to find work/life balance and it can’t always be blamed on the profession itself. With that said, I believe there are certain settings that may lend to better balance.

Thanks for sharing Arwen! I'm applying for Masters of OT right now and as I'm finishing up my kinesiology degree. Do you have any advice for me before I write my 250 word 'essay' and my CASPer test (a situational/ethical decision making exam)? Thank you!

@arwensayso.k.4809 3 года назад
I am so sorry I missed your comment and this response is probably too late but I hope the test went well! Unfortunately, I do not have any experience with the CASPer test and am unable to provide you with any advice regarding this test. From the looks of it there’s not much you can do to prepare for it. As for the essay I’m not sure what the prompt was, but my advice would be to have at least 2 different people proof read it. My mom proofread all my papers until I graduated lol

You are inspiring me so much!! I can relate to you so much. I am still working on getting my BA in psychology and I've done so many observation hours with OTs when I was working at a Rehabilitation hospital. Does it matter what year Ive done the hours can they be like 3 or 4 years old from the time I apply for OT ? Because I want to request them from the OT that I have worked with.
@arwensayso.k.4809
@arwensayso.k.4809 3 года назад
I do not think it matters as long as you have proof of the observation and completed hours. I would try to request them at the time of the observation in case you are not able to re-contact the OT if it has been an extended period of time as you suggested. Good Luck!!

UT Health Science Center and UTMB. There are many other schools that I could have applied to but my goal was to stay in Texas.

@Arwen Says O.K. are you in Texas since you mentioned UT Health? I have been looking into the UT Health San Antonio for Occupational Therapy after I finish my Bachelor's. I would love a mentor if you are in this area.

I’m so happy you’re content with your decision in pursuing occupational therapy. Do you see yourself progressing into a different career in the future? Or do you not see yourself doing anything else? I just changed my major to spanish education, because my grades for the sciences aren’t the best. I don’t know if I gave up on occupational therapy completely but like you said how you wanted to be in the medical field, that’s how I feel about education. I’m going to give teaching a shot. I really want to work at a school. And I want to make a difference in the lives of young people. Throughout this process, I’m realizing my strengths and weaknesses but also desires. So I thank you for giving me your perspective on the career and an insight of your life. I love your videos and your character. God bless you and your family.

I’m glad you have self-awareness to guide you in making decisions about your career path. It’s such an underrated skill. It’s hard to predict the future but I feel I will always have a job related to OT in some way although it may not always be interacting with patients directly. That’s the great thing about OT, there are so many possibilities. I hope you are able to find fulfillment in education, although the future of education and what the classroom looks like is ever changing due to this pesky virus…Thanks again for watching!!

Hi Arwen! I have to start doing my observation hours here soon, do you have any guidance/tips on how I can find places to complete these hours?
@arwensayso.k.4809
@arwensayso.k.4809 4 года назад
number 1 tip: Be patient and persistent. Most people will say no, or that they don’t have time, or therapist availability. Don’t let that discourage you. Keep calling and asking and someone will eventually say yes. It will probably be more challenging to find observation sites with the impact of the virus but that’s why you plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to complete the observations. To be honest I was able to get my observation placements based on personal connections and acquaintances from friends and family. Number 2 tip: don’t be afraid to ask for favors from friends or family who work in the industry.
