I’m a pediatric occupational therapist who also happens to love RU-vid, coffee, and ballet.
There’s not a lot of RU-vid channels out there documenting occupational therapy so I thought I could fill the gap. BUT there’s no guarantee that these videos are going to good. You've been warned.
If you have questions, comments, or just want to send me funny memes, don’t hesitate to email me at: arwensaysot@gmail.com
Please stop with the abbreviations. I’m guessing OT means occupational therapy just say occupational therapy is that hard to say personally I feel it’s an intrusion entity, useless exercise. There’s nothing to be gained by occupational therapy, physical therapy is another story. I believe that is helpful so please stop with the abbreviations. 6:57
Hi! I hope you are okay! I'm Rita, I'm Portuguese and I'm an OT too! I really enjoyed this video! Hope to watch more content like this! I'm reaching out because I recently graduated and my first job is with kids. I'm about to start soon and I don't have much practical experience in this area. So I was hoping you could helping me out 😊
Do you think the Occupational Therapy in Acute Care textbook will be helpful if I transition from school based OT into a pediatric acute care hospital setting?
Hi Arwen, It’s been a while since your post .I was just looking for some ideas / inspiration for telehealth and thanks for your vid’s . I’m Aussie and enjoyed your use of the word ‘ boonies ‘ !! Terrific i’m going to see if it takes off at home !! Also thanks for the reassurance and general encouragement OT wise !!
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Heartbreak 💔 I am disabled and I have a lot of disabilities. When you said heartbreak 💔 did you mean seeing someone with Cerebral palsy or multiple disabilities? 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 You definitely said it….there is so much beauty in the world 🌎 and also so much suffering. I think what really makes me emotional is when an occupational therapist meets someone that is going through a lot more than Cerebral Palsy. If you have met someone like that.

Hello! Wondering if any of you have had experiencing administering peabody/BOT assessment via telehealth with a facilitator present? Is it still considered standardized? What has worked well and hasn't when administering? Thanks
I went to a cheap cota school, finished with no debt, then worked while in OT school and cash flowed my masters. No debt at all when graduating. Never borrowed a cent. Also kiyosaki’s advice is a little counterintuitive for people drowning in debt.
Hi! You mentioned that Texas only allows you to do so many "online/virtual" CEUs, but I can't find that anywhere in the Texas OT Rules document under categories of education. Am I missing something?😅
Hi I have completed my bechalors degree in OT 4.5 years of course from india. And have experience of 2.5years in Pediatric set-up. I am thinking of pursuing m.sc in psychology from distance. Do you think it would be beneficial and will allow me to work as an OT in canada..?? Any response would be highly appreciated..! Thanks
How do we make OTs known? I’m constantly referred to on the phone as a PT or the nurse. When we provide so much more observation on their daily functions and changes vs the other professions. I’m going mad. Like I don’t need the recognition but I’m sick of all these commercials praising nurses when (in at least my facility) they don’t notice negative changes or care nearly as much as we do
This angers me so much especially working in a facility where the nurses refuse to wear masks appropriately and really don’t give a shit about patients when we’re the ones telling them about negative changes we see
Doctorate for OT's take only 3 years to get after attaining a bachelors. This includes taking summer courses. This is what an OT advisor told me. I'm super excited but can't seem to find much videos on Neonatal Occupational Therapist..
I’ve been really struggling after looking at graduate programs and realizing that the change in master’s to doctoral degrees will just incur more debt, but I guess I’ll just keep researching and seeing if it’ll actually be worth it.
Hi! Been following you, your videos are helpful. Hope you are safe and well. May I know how can I reach you? If it's fine, therebis something I want to ask about home health practice. Do you have an instagram or email? Hope you grant my request.. It would be very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing your story! I have only applied to one school so far (it’s pretty much the only one in my state) and I’m so anxious to hear back from them mid-March! I am also engaged and planning my wedding for November of 2021 (over thanksgiving break). I know I kind of put all my eggs in one basket at the moment 😂 but fingers crossed I get in this cycle. I’m so excited!! 🤞
@@lee_rayyy58 we actually don’t start until July 19th but ive met a few of my classmates digitally on far everyone is super nice and it looks like it’s going to go very well! And that’s awesome congrats to you! I hope all goes well on your OT journey ❤️
OT student here... I really like home health but I am nervous that going straight into home health after school won't allow me to grow as quickly and learn from others. Would you recommend getting experience in a different setting first to learn or should this not be as much of a worry?
Happy late Valentine’s Day Arwen! As a high school student, I love watching your channel to learn more about the field I want to go into! I know you’ve worked in home health pediatrics, but what other ot jobs have you had? What was your favorite? If you’re comfortable answering, what was the biggest drawback to each? Thank you so much! I’m a big fan!
My previous job was outpatient peds. At this time, I still prefer home health over outpatient. I get to make my own schedule, I am not stuck inside all day, and I have more choice in creating my caseload. But those are also drawbacks since it does take more time and effort to do those things. Unfortunately it usually takes experience to figure out what area of practice suits you.
@@arwensayso.k.4809 Thank you for your reply! I totally agree that it’s hard to know until you get out there. Right now, I’m super interested in neonatal ot, but there’s not a ton of information on that so that kind of stinks. I’ve been looking into getting some shadowing hours in with the ot that works at my district’s elementary school, but because of Covid no outside visitors are allowed. Do you have any tips for how to ask other ots if I could shadow them? Any ideas to “gain experience” from home? Shadowing hours are great because I’m trying to apply for a program at a nearby technical center that is ot based for my senior year.
Yes lol If you're referring to assisting adults with toileting, dressing, and bathing, there are certainly areas of practice that do not require this. But these “occupations” are foundational to OT and very important skills for us to be able to address. So, the short answer is yes, with those areas being Peds, assistive technology companies, and maybe adult outpatient. The long answer is, while you may not address self-care directly, the activities of dressing, bathing, and toileting may be addressed in other ways such as helping a child lay still for diaper changes or helping a client modify their home to be able to use the bathroom safely. I do not think you’ll ever be able to fully avoid theses activities but you could definitely find jobs where you do not directly have to assist in these skills. If that is concerning for you though you may need to re-think OT.
1:55, not entirely correct. From the AOTA website: "The ACOTE mandate will NOT impact occupational therapy students currently enrolled in master’s-degree programs or students planning to enroll in the next 6 years. ONLY students graduating after July 1, 2027, would be impacted." You can graduate with a Master's degree up until that date and still be fine. Whether or not Master's degrees will be available is another story. But for context, I am starting a Master's program this summer. The mandate will go into full effect (pending some people voting?) in 2027.
Very good points! Thank you for sharing your perspective. I agree that screen time is not great for child development and virtual school has been proven not effective. For therapy it is crucial to be there with the person because you just miss so much if you're not there able to observe with your eyes. Attention spans suffer. There is just something about in person contact and connection that you can't replace.
My university offers occupational science as a bachelors degree that is closely tied to our master's program here as well! I am in my last semester of undergrad and I honestly feel much more prepared for OT school than I though I would. We have learned so much about the theory and models of OT as undergrads so that when we enter the grad program we will have more foundational knowledge! Super lucky that my local, regional university offered this as a degree.
I just found your channel and you are probably my favorite OT channel I have found so far! I am getting ready to start my last semester of undergrad. I am soooo thankful that my university has an occupational science program that is very closely tied to the occupational therapy masters program. Same faculty and everything. Luckily I will know many of my classmates and professors going into OT school. Thanks for these videos to help ease some of my nerves 😂
Hi! I’m 17 right now and I am planning on doing OT. I would want to have a bachelor degree in Behavioral Science (4years) and do a grad school/ masters (2years) by then it will be 2027 will I make it through the cut off? so that I won’t have to do doctorate 😥
I think it will depend on the schools you're applying to. Most programs may have already transitioned to the OTD program by that time. I would look up the schools you might be interested in and see if it says when their program will be changing. But don't let the doctorate deter you if that's what you really want :)
