George is a Manchester native. He works as a sales manager. When his two children had grown up, he found he had more free time and he wanted to give back. He had seen CASA of NH on television commercials and he had read a pamphlet about CASA's work. In 2002 he applied to become a CASA volunteer and underwent the 40 hour training.
Jeremy experienced neglect when he was young. New Hampshire Division of Children, Youth and Families filed a petition with the courts. The courts referred him to CASA when he was 6 years old.
That's when George came into his life as a relatively new CASA advocate. For Jeremy, being moved into a foster home and getting involved in a seemingly never ending series of court hearings was confusing and he didn't know what would happen next. With Jeremy's world turned upside down, George was the one person to stand by him throughout the entire process. George was to become an expert on Jeremy, meeting regularly with everyone connected to Jeremy's life, his birth family, his foster family, his teacher, DCYF, etc. Jeremy remembers the times he and George would play catch in the backyard. George did all of this so he could effectively represent Jeremy's best interests to the judge in the courtroom.
George introduced Jeremy to Louise and Norm Brassard. They took him into foster care and eventually adopted Jeremy in 2005, when he was 10 years old. Jeremy had finally got a safe and permanent home. However, the story doesn't end there. Jeremy had to work hard to get caught up in school and adjust to a new life. Now Jeremy is 18 years old. He is a senior in high school, a champion cross-country runner, and a decorated Eagle Scout. Next year he will be going to college on a scholarship.
George, now with 12 years of service under his belt, has advocated for 16 children and continues to serve within the organization. Louise, Jeremy's adoptive mother, inspired by George's work with CASA, became a CASA volunteer advocate in 2011 and has served on several cases.
To the outsider, George is just an ordinary guy, but with the training and supervision of CASA of New Hampshire to back him up, he's been empowered to do extraordinary things for children in need. George is one of hundreds of men and women across New Hampshire who have stood up to fulfill the community's responsibility to the most vulnerable people in the state. It's because of people like George that the best interests of New Hampshire's abused and neglected children are effectively represented in court. They're more likely to thrive in a safe and permanent home like Jeremy has. CASA interrupts the cycle of abuse and neglect of children and replaces it with a new cycle of care and responsibility.
Unfortunately, due to a shortage of volunteers, every year, hundreds of children in New Hampshire have to go without the services of a CASA volunteer. Because of this they are less likely to be placed in a safe-permanent home like Jeremy was. Not a single child should have to go without a CASA advocate.
