Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, we’re going to be discussing one of if not THE most powerful wizard to have ever lived - Merlin. You’ve probably heard of Merlin before, and if not, I’m sure you’ve at least heard the expression ‘Merlin’s Beard’ which is commonly used by Dumbledore and expresses surprise.
Merlin is a particularly interesting character because he didn’t only exist in Harry Potter folklore, he existed in our folklore as well. We see this same sort of thing with Nicholas Flamel. However, it should be mentioned that there are a few differences between the two Merlins. The Merlin from our own folklore was a legendary figure known across the lands as a prominent enchanter and wizard- he was most notably featured in Arthurian legend, but was also a prominent figure in medieval Welsh poetry. The concept of ‘Merlin’ that we’re most familiar with first appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s famous work entitled: Historia Regum Britanniae. The book was first published in 1136 and is essentially a pseudo-historical account of British history- following the lives of the Kings of Briton over the millennia. Merlin was created when Geoffrey combined two prominent historical figures - Myrddin Wyltt, A north Brythonic prophet, and Ambrosius Aurelianus, a Romano-British war leader.
However, The story that we most commonly associate with Merlin in our own culture is the story of King Arthur, and the knights of the round table. The story, which has been subject to copious adaptations over the years, tells the tales of King Arthur, his court, his kingdom, and his most trustworthy men. The Knights of the Round Table were a sub-order of the Knights of Camelot created by Arthur Pendragon, and they helped him with whatever quarrels he had to deal with. In one story, even helping him to combat his sister, Morgana Pendragon, and her attempts to conquer Camelot. In the realm of this universes ‘Merlin’, he is a powerful sorcerer, and the trusted and wise advisor of Arthur.
However, what is most interesting about Merlin is that he’s such an enigmatic figure. He’s the subject of much discussion, widely because his existence has been adapted in so many ways, and slotted in to so many different stories. There’s a certain allure about Merlin, because he’s this figure that’s supposedly immensely wise and powerful, but there’s still so much that is unknown about him. The fact that he appears in so many different tales, myths and legends only adds to this mystique.
I mean, he even ended up in Harry Potter. And though Merlin isn’t explicitly mentioned much in Harry Potter, he does pop up here and there. He’s the reason that the phrase ‘Merlins beard’ exists (as I mentioned earlier), he’s on a Hogwarts portrait, he’s on a Chocolate Frog Card, and he’s even the founder of an organization called ‘The Order of Merlin’.
It has been expressed that The ‘Order of Merlin’ was founded by Merlin during the middle ages, created with the goal of promoting laws to protect and benefit muggles. While it was once an organization, it later became an award, honouring impressive accomplishment or good deeds. There are three different levels of the award: First Class, Second Class, and Third Class.
The three levels of the award can be distinguished by the colour of the ribbon which holds up a large golden medal. First class was awarded for "acts of outstanding bravery or distinction" in magic, and was represented by a green ribbon. Second class was awarded for "achievement or endeavour beyond the ordinary." and was represented by a purple ribbon, and Third Class was awarded for “contributions to knowledge or entertainment’ and was represented by a white ribbon.
Being a recipient of the Order of Merlin was a huge honour, and can be compared to being knighted in our own world. Albus Dumbledore was the recipient of this award after his prominent defeat of Gellert Grindelwald in 1945.
Merlin was a strong believer that the muggle and wizarding worlds should co-exist, and founded the original organization in an effort to help alleviate any complications associated with the coalescence of the two worlds. In the middle ages especially there was a lot of conflict between muggles and wizards. The wizarding world was essentially wide open, and muggles knew that witches and wizards walked among them.

I knew that Merlin was in the Harry Potter folklore, but for me, I know and am more familiar with his version portrayed by the TV-series produced by BBC. Granted, it has its problems but in my opinion, it's one of the better versions, as far as I can tell. There, Merlin had a normal human mother but his father was a Dragonlord (they had the ability to commune with the Dragons). Merlin had also another name, more ancient, prophesied by the witches and wizards of old. He becomes a servant in the court of Uther Pendragon, Arthur's father but has to hide his magical abilities, since the witch-hunt, if you will, is full on. Much more happens as well in the series, and although I'm not entirely happy with some changes and alterations, it did a good job! I kinda recommend it, it's all good and fun.

Merlin is according to my favorite theory based on a real historical person, a Welsh bard called Myrddin Wyllt (Myrddin the Wild) who fought in the battle of Arfderydd and after the very bloody defeat and victory of two warlords he considers beyond cruel, fled to the forest and lived in the wild, where he received a gift of prophecy and became known as a seer (a Welsh word for a seer is dryw = druid). Despite living in woods, Merlin lives in certain luxury thanks to his sister Gwendydd, who is the wife of king Rodarcus. Rodarcus tests the accuracy of Merlins prophecies and after he predicts that the same boy dies in three different ways (tripping on rock, trapped by tree, drowning in river), he dismisses Merlin as a mad man, until the child truly trips on a rock, what causes him to fall into a river where he drowns and his body is later found trapped in a fallen tree across the river. After that, Rodarcus begins to respect Merlin and has a huge house with many windows to watch the stars build for him in the middle of forest, ordering 70 scribers to follow Merlin and writing down everything he says. He himself often search advice from Merlin and so do many kings and leaders. Merlin is believed to be closely associated with druidic religion, who through his prophecies and actions often tried to trick, deceive and manipulate the political situation in certain way, and who, to his own sadness, predicted the defeat of Britons by Saxons (the prophecy about two dragons -the white one representing Saxons taking over the red one representing Wales).

I was always fascinated by the oldest story, of Myrddin, before Geoffrey of Monmouth fused him with Aurelius. It's actually believable! He was a soldier who lost his mind in the midst of battle and fled into the woods, not talking for years, living as a hermit. He eventually became completely attuned to the forest, and when he finally started talking to people it was with great wisdom and compassion from his years of suffering and wrestling with what we'd now call PTSD to work his way through to the other side. That he was also alleged to have uncanny powers fits with the kind of shamanic journey that he underwent.

The legend says that Merlin's wife Vivian (not sure of her name in English) asked him to teach her his powers. He did it and told her of a spell that could trap someone into a jail made out of her. Vivian, deeply in love with Merlin, and so jealous that she was afraid that he would go out with another woman, waited till he fell asleep and trapped Merlin into that air jail. Legend says that we can sometimes hear Merlin yell that someone lets him out.

You said in the start that Dumbledore used it to express surprise. I don't recall to have heard it from Dumbledore, but I have a few other scenes in mind where other wizards have used the phrase, in surprise. Wizards in mind are Slughorn, Arthur Weasely, and Amus Diggory. Slughorn uses the phrase frequently through the story of the Half Blood Prince. From where Dumbledore and Harry meets Slughorn the first time, through the film, also in flashback later, where we see how Slughorn had a conversation with Tom Riddle in the past. In The order of the Phoenix, we hear Arthur Weasly say: "Merlin's beard", as Kingo just sneaks into the elevator in the Ministery, telling that the time of Harry's hearing have just been changed, (hindering Harry and Dumbledore in particular, I'm sure, to attend to it in the first place) And in The Goblet of fire, we hear Amos Diggory express "Merlin's beard" when he meets Harry Potter the first time. Those three scenes from throughout the franchise, are the ones I can come to think of, on my sitting rear end.

In Welsh, the double D (dd) is pronounced like the English hard 'th', as in the word 'the'. Just thought you'd like to know. Historically speaking, Merlin, like Arthur, probably dates from the 5th century AD, just after the Romans left Britain. If I recall correctly, there are Welsh tales of that period that mention both Merlin and Arthur. Mary Stewart's Merlin series of books, which starts with 'The Crystal Cave', uses what little we know of the historical Merlin as a jumping-off point.
@philard

Exactly. The video creator should stick to Harry Potter lore - he mentioned the real life legend of Merlin lived in 11th to 12th century. A few years ago the British History podcast did a great episode on the legend of King Arthur and the "Battle of Badon".

I always believed that Merlin was somehow related to Slytherin based upon his real legends. Possibly the child of Slytherin himself but did not agree with his father's ideas and was more drawn to Gryffindor and Hufflepuff in how they thought about muggles. He would have used his ambition, resourcefulness, determination, and cleverness to bring the magical world together with the non magical world.

I'm going to preface this by saying it's been a while since I read the books, but I'm pretty sure Ron's the only one who said that, and he was 11 at the time. Going off the lore, every house in Hogwarts has produced dark wizards (Hufflepuff having the fewest). Also, there's still a difference between the statements "every dark wizard was in Slytherin" and "every Slytherin becomes a dark wizard". It the same difference as the statements "Every square is a rectangle" (True: as a rectangle is a geometric shape with four sides all connected at 90 degree angles) and "every rectangle is a square" (False: as to be considered a square, all four sides must be the same length)

Merlin couldn't have been a muggle-born because he was sorted into Slytherin, I believe that he was a half-blood as his father is called a "demon or incubus" and we know that the muggles of that time viewed witches and wizards as something demonic, and his mother is the daughter of the king of Northumberland, someone of that high status are closely observed hence if she would have been a witch then the people would have known, but even if we assume that the commoners didn't notice, the king and the queen must have and I think they would disown or kill her while still a child as they would have realized that the people will notice her abilities someday and that could cause a rebellion. Hence, most probably his father was a wizard and mother a muggle...
