The life of Osamu Dazai has not been an easy one.“I am convinced that human life is filled with many pure, happy, serene examples of insincerity, truly splendid of their kind-of people deceiving one another without (strangely enough) any wounds being inflicted, of people who seem unaware even that they are deceiving one another.”

I want you all to know to please separate osamu dazai (the character) and osamu dazai (the author) a lot of people seem to treat this mans mental stability as some joke because "omg that's a bsd reference!!" His suicide was not some reference or think to compare to a character. He was an incredibly talented but struggling man and think we should separate him and the character based on him

It's actually five. The first one is from overdosing probably due to the fact that his favourite author, Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, had commited suicide. Then the second attempt was drowning, with Shimeko Tanabe, but he survived and Tanabe didn't. The third attempt was hanging himself in 1935, due to the failure of employeement for Tokyo Shimbun and being cheated on by Hatsuyo Oyama, his second lover. The fourth attempt, was overdosing again, with Hatsuyo Oyama. They bother survived, but got divorced afterwards. Then he cheated on Michiko Tsushima, and commited his final suicide with Tomie Yamazaki by drowning.

So much suffering man....he wasn't necessarily a good person, having cheated with many women but this is beyond depressing. So many factors that just caused his life to spiral out of control. Found out about him like a year ago from his "no longer human" novel but had no idea about his life until stumbling across this video.
@chasingskiess
@chasingskiess 2 года назад
I believe the cheating aspect has alot to do with his depression. Individuals that have a history of mood disorders such as depression usually struggle with a sexual addiction or compulsion. So the point im trying to get across is this - everyone is good or bad in some ways. I dont think it's fair to characterize him as a bad person just because he cheated on multiple women. The act of cheating is viewed as immoral by society. Even I myself would think that im not capable of cheating but the truth is I just havent reach the breaking point of life.

I love No Longer Human! There's also an animated film version of it, that you didn't mention. It's visually beautiful, and really captures the mood. I haven't watched the other adaptations though tbh, so I can't compare. Such a tragic waste that Dazai finally 'suceeded' in taking his own life. I hope his soul has found peace. Edit: Actually, I think the anime 'film' that I saw might have been the 4-part anime series, but when I saw it on French TV they showed all the episodes back to back as 1 full length film. In any case, I thoroughly recommend it. Although I would say that it's probably not a good idea to watch it if you're feeling suicidal. And for anyone who is feeling suicidal, here's a huge HUG for you. Just know that this stranger on the other side of the world loves you and cares about you. Please be kind to yourself - you're worth more than you think.

I've read the Novel "no longer human" since i was a bsd fans and just realize that they refferencing dazai's(bsd) characteristic from the novel. And i bought the book after a week i watched this video. There is a lot words that i don't understand in the novel, and the thing i feel/understand just his pain. (Spoiler )He wrote that when he draws comic about his village he often cried because his family already disown him. Its kinda hurt to read the novel ngl, because i can feel the depression form the novel, he want to happy, but he failed. Rest in peace dazai. there is this part in no longer human where yozo pat that time was depressed because his work didnt sell he turned to alcohol and smoking he started noticing a difference in the way his family has become one time he came back home and found his wife and her daughter having a great moment where they brought him a gift and happily waiting for him to surprise him to make him feel better at that moment he realized how much he's making their life miserable and how they were alot happier without him and how much effort they make to make him happier but he still cant feel the happiness and decided to leave them to let them enjoy their life without his miseranle self I think that the part where he explains why he left is like a reason for his real wife and daughter or more like an apology explaining why he abandonded them because he thought theyd be happier without him

The fact that in no longer human Oba's attempt was an almost exact replica of Dazai's first attempt I related to a lot of things in no longer human to an almost scary extent, which it now makes sense as to why i was so drawn to the character osamu dazai from bungo stray dogs, tbf the author of bungo stray dogs did a pretty good job at referencing not only Dazais life itself but his writing too

Though, I started reading this book few months ago, I cannoy read it continously because of its heaviness (emotionally), I have to put it down a lot of times and take a breather. It was a book of unveiling, seeing, and feeling. I will take my time reading this.
