I always asked myself where the rock n roll really came from... Never expected a happy rebellious gospel woman would be the inventor of rock!! I really hope she's at the hall of fame rock n roll.
No u know! We as black people African Americans discover rock and roll it was taken over by the white men white slaves in the Elvis Presley but I'm so happy that you see this thank you for being in our culture and recognize our culture happy Black History month February 2022
She truly was a great artist. So sad that it took a British video (3 Parts) to bring her to light for the rest of the world. I've listened to Black artists ever since I can remember but this is the first time I've ever heard of this woman!
Laura Anderson there's other documentaries black people knew of her we tried telling ppl a black woman created rock and roll her legacy is so neglected because of white supremacy and sexism
@@angelasantiago7426 I wouldn't say White Supremacy since everyone recognizes Chuck Berry as the Father of Rock and Roll but Sexism most definitely was a big part into why she wasn't known it's a shame but at least we got the internet to listen to her music and appreciate what she has done for music all together
@@hunternichols9463 Chuck Barry is not considered the Father of Rock and Roll. History says it is Bill Haley who Recorded the first Rock and Roll Record. Bit was actually Ike Turner. At every turn they dismiss the true innovators.
I have never heard of this amazing woman. Leave it to the BBC to inform us of our great American leaders. Otherwise we would never know. Thank you for posting this content.
@@corporalhenshaw These days, any broadcast that attempts to tell the truth has enemies. Unfortunately, with the globalization of nationalism, things might only get worse before they get better.
Stop it. Real music came from everywhere. Bach, Mozart and Beethoven weren’t black. And we’ve know all along, before Tharp that blues was from American roots. Why even bring race into it? It’s not necessary. And why do we need proof?
@@Bob-jl2oe BEETHOVEN WAS FATHER WAS BLACK…..U SHAKE YOUR TREE HARD ENOUGH……SOMETHING BLACK WILL FALL OUT THAT MUG SO DO GET TO HIGH BECAUSE ONE OF YOUR FOREFATHERS MIGHT JUST BE BLACK!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣….NINJA!!! ✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿🥷🏿
@Gabriella Shimone- are you a musician? She was mostly gospel and crossed over to Rock and Roll. “Blues” developed in the late 1800’s before Tharp was even born.
@@Bob-jl2oe NO…..THE ANSWER IS U CANT POSSIBLY BE A MUSICIAN…..IF ANYTHING U ARE AN ENTERTAINER…..ALL THE GREAT MUSICIANS THAT CAN PLAY RECOGNIZE BLUES IS THE MOTHER CAT OF ALL AMERICAN MUSIC ESPECIALLY SINCE BLACK FOLKS BLUES IS THE ONLY TRUE AMERICAN ARTFORM….WHEN I HEAR PEOPLE PRETEND TO BE MUSICIANS AND DONT RECOGNIZE BLACK FOLKS BLUES IS THE FOUNDATION OF ROCK AND GOSPEL THEN I CAN ALWAYS TELL A LIAR IS TALKING!!!
Just proves the fact how sniddy those people are who get you to sign a contract they don't care who it upsets as long as they get their Dollars...Genius of a musician and singer who still had faith and spirit within her no matter what any one thinks...How can you judge a person if you don't know her....Just goes to show how mad every one is with thier own inner demons of illusion...if she singed a contract without seeing the small print that she has to sing what ever is given to her then it isn't her fault.....Just proves how evil people can be with thier own intent and agendas when it comes to money...The art is the artist not the person who sells it to make a profit.....God bless her
Its Now ! 2018! Congratulations! To The late* Legend , Godmother of Rock n Roll, * Rosetta Tharpe , for finally been I ducted In * The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! In 2018 , long over due..Pat , will be buying her C. D.
Just learned about sister Rosetta Tharpe this week and I've been obsessed with her all week! I hear her all over music. She is the most unsung musician to me now. She was absolutely incredible
If there was anyone deserving to be given a place in the rock n roll hall of fame , Sister Rosetta should have been the first inductee. Sadly it took till 2018....to me thats disgusting. It use to drive Brian Jones mad how all this great talent was here in America and was so disrespectingly overlooked.
Singers back in Rosetta's day sang because they loved singing and thoroughly enjoyed it. Today's performers are so self absorbed they have no idea what it's like to just enjoy singing and being themselves. I was born in the wrong day and time, but hopefully I'll see Rosetta's in heaven and she'll still be singing her heart out. I'm gonna gather my family and be on the front row. What a great talent!!
Bella Grace They did it that way because that’s the nature of a true musician. Doing it for the love because they know damn well they’ll never get rich. Wish I had a nickel for every cat I know who busks on the street & plays gigs for free or near nothing, working shitty jobs to pay the bills, knowing that’s what they’ll be doing for the rest of their lives. Most of the famous ones aren’t real. They just wanted money & fame. Every once in a while a star shines so bright nothing can cover its shine-not even time.
Man I remember the Jordanaires doing that tune in the 1970's, it was the most amazing night! We had one radio station in town run by one guy and he closed it down to come to the show! They came a few times after that, once or twice with other acts, but this first time at our church was like we were all dying of thirst and they were bringing the Living Water! Hot hot night, my Uncle Bill sitting beside with his arm stretched on the back of the pew, I think I finally ended up standing on the pew with him steadying me so I could see! I must have been, my sisters and I in the dresses made for us at Easter, with wrist corsages we had made ourselves in Vacation Bible School that week. I remember so much of that night, our Bible School projects still ask around the church windowsillss, they laughed at our Sunday School building fund chart given their signature song, and as people filed out at the end, they all stood in the Galilee and shook everybody's hands. How I wish the Sister had been able to come with them!
I AM SO GLAD THE BRITS PUT THIS OUT THANK YOU BRITAN FOR TEACHING AMERICA ABOUT THE ROOTS OF ITS AMERICAN MUSICAL HISTORY BUT WHAT DIDNT LEARN BY US FROM SISTER ROSETTA THORPE /WE AND BY THE WAY SISTER RESETA THORPE A GOAT AS WELL SHE IS jAMMING PEOPLE DI NOT KWNO SHE WORKED WITH THE JORADAIRES PEOPLE
musicians, poets, and creative artists draw from and are led by a deep spirituality. They may feel great emotion that when shared with others creates a better world. Thank God for Rosetta Atkins Tharpe
Dear Lord God I go to Work every Day and I am Around Sinners I am I do be the light of World if I am In Church Every Sister Rosetta Tharpe God Needs Her to Play at is feet now God is Without a Guitars and The World Must Move on Without For God Has Needs And Sister Rosetta Tharpe God Needs Her Voice and Music Tallent
I feel like I've been in the dark all my life regarding recent music and been lied to about history -- lied to about music, and also that women don't have much influence on music evolution. I have to shift my brain around quite a bit. Not only is the story fascinating and exciting to me, and making me have redo my understanding of the past, but the presentation of this story is of a much higher quality than I expected. Thank you so much for putting this together, corporalhenshaw. My only small complaint is not displaying the name of the person speaking, or displaying the year when an old clip is shown. That would have been a nice-to-have, but I enjoyed this very much nonetheless. Anyone who cares about music or even the history of the US, needs to know about her. (She didn't just have influence on music, but had much influence beyond that as well, based on this series and other things I've read recently.)
Tank you very much for the transmission , pour le documentaire incroyable de cette grande Dame musicienne Rosetta Tharpe qui a donné son art au plus grand nombre et espoir pour que d'autres musiciens et musiciennes se fassent connaître dans une période encore difficile pour les afro-américains, nous vous remercions et en mon nom seulement nous nous excusons que l'Europe ait pu faire vivres des hommes et des femmes dans la traite de l'esclavages, un devoir de mémoires s'impose ! Merci pour le jazz, la saoule, le blues, le rock , le country, et les claquettes pour la danse , merci tank you very much
Amazing lady and well done documentary. Sadly she is left out of two many documentaries charting the history and influences of music when she was clearly a huge influence on so many!
Thank you so very much for uploading the videos. I also though I was a music "expert", never before I heard of her, I am reborn listening to sister Rosetta.
Segregation has been the worst thing ever in this country, but because of it we have this superb music and the likes of this fantastic woman. If that sounds racist, it's not intended to. That's not to say white men had shit to do with her talent or the talents of so many other black artists. OMG I would love to go back to this time and be part of this! No, I'd like to go all the way back to the late 1800s when Scott Joplin was first writing his music. Way back in 1972 when I was in my first year in college, my first research paper was on ragtime music and early jazz. Honestly, I feel cheated I was born in the early 50s! "Her four little white babies!" Lol! Precious!
6:08 is literally pre-historic hip hop. On top of that, All of her gospel structure is the foundation of rock and blues. I can't believe one person is this culturally influential. It's incredible.
I did not know and had never heard of it. I thought up a good music connoisseur, but when I found out, I was in love with his music, beauty and his guitar.
Thank you so much I am really really enjoying this biography of Sister Rosetta Tharp. She was amazing woman, and an extraordinarily beautiful person. I’m going to watch all of these, but it’s midnight here in the uk and I’m going to have to watch these tomorrow.
Every time I hear her music now I think back when I was in Prince band for like 4 years and we would do blues songs and the guitar riffs all this stuff he learned from her prince was a genius and now he is gone but I realize he learned from many geniuses black women black men but he never exposed to me this woman rest in peace
Fuck the Rock n Roll hall of fame. Nothing more than a clueless collection of mainstream shite, with few exceptions. To overlook this amazing lady and others (like Captain Beefheart) is complete arrogance and ignorance.
This is more important than even rock and roll. And I love the great early rock and roll for sure. This is the true gospel. She had to play some worldly music to pay the bills as is often the case.. it happens..we are stuck here on earth till we get to finally get out of here..
Ok. Time to put her life on the BIG screen. More then half of the singers from the 50s -70s took something from her music Queen Latifa, would play the part and this would open up so many opportunities for so many. What are we waiting for
The problem was that the church would not pay you and wanted you to play and sing for free and people wanted to eat too and pay rent. I worked for a church and for the first 6 years or so did not get paid for all my work but then it did change a bit. But people left to get paid so many great people who sang back then started in the church but left to get paid.
You're absolutely right. The only ones that make money working for a church are the pastors/preachers/elders/priests/ cardinals/the pope, only the big honchos of the church make thousands if not millions in the business. It's sad that for a lot of people God have a price tag, and your salvation depends on how much you give to church (them). The church is more a business venture than the house of God all mighty, many swindlers find their way into a church to live well off the hard work of others using the name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Because the corruption of a few many don't believe anymore.
God knows His children. She needed a life; and kept the awareness that she was saved. A bend Reed The Lord will not break, and a smoking flax God will never put out.
God, mainstream music lately. Its typically so inauthentic and hollow and its main objective is to just make people buy buy buy. I hope music like this still lives on. This woman needs to be in the rock and roll hall of fame period. Definitly going to paint her portrait soon.
