The problem was that the engine was fundamentally flawed. It was very unreliable & suffered a variety of problems throughout its "works" usage. David Wood had a racing/technical background & no experience of the rigor's of top level rallying & made no allowances for this with the engine regularly suffering terminal damage due to stones & debris being ingested into the cam-belt system. Another problem was that the guy in charge had no real idea on how to run a competition department & was running his own agenda which ultimately led to him spending time on an enforced holiday at her majesty's pleasure.

Really, a very flawed Groub B rallycar, mainly because of the engine. Hopelessly slow against the competition, especially against the likes of the 205 Turbo 16 or the Delta S4 which were the fastest of these monsters.

400bhp from a naturally aspirated engine is not good? Considering that the engine was never fully developed makes your statement flawed. So how many other cars was it hopelessly slow against? Tony Pond and others demonstrated the potential of the car. I should imagine that you were one of the many that slagged off Paddy Hopkirk's efforts in the Monte Carlo, driving a Mini Cooper....just another "very flawed and underpowered" vehicle..You really are mediocre.

It was the spectators fault not the rally drivers. If you had half a brain you learn which curve to stand on or which corner a car might go off on. Fast corners are fun but be up high It's because they can't drive. For spectators to stand mid stage on a dangerous corner is stupid.we had whistles to warn the car approaching and we used to shout car!!! It's all about inertia you know.
