In the 90' console's magazines were my food, and i was more interested into reading about the new upcoming hardware than the games. Any month there was some new rumors and i remember i used to read articles over and over again looking for some info i could have missed. It truly was another another life, another world eh

I was the same way. Every month I would eagerly wait for the new EGM, NextGen and Game Pro to arrive in the mail. I still have every single issue of those magazines I bought. I never threw one away.

Oh yea. When I was little my dad would grab me copies of GamePro. When I got older I got EGM. Those mags were absolute treasures and I wish I still had more copies today. Oh and I also use to love Diehard Game Fan as well. Such simpler times.

Man this was so nostalgic. My dad was actually one of the few to buy a 3DO.Some of the games were cool but even then I felt like something was off about it. He would try to convince me that Way of the Warrior was better than my SNES copy of Mortal Kombat. 😄 I remember him going on and on about the upcoming M2. This was such a weird period in gaming.

Just before the launch of the PlayStation (Sept. 9th 1995) in the US, the 3DO was the biggest selling 32/64 bit console in the US. Then 3DO announced that the 3DO console would no longer be upgradable to the M2. They said the M2 needed a 4x speed CD-drive. The 3DO only had a 2x speed drive. No one was going to spend $300 on a console that was going to be replaced the following year. Following the announcement, 3DO sales virtually stopped.

I remember some of the furore over this as there was major complaints via the developer houses that the SDK's were heinously priced and Panasonic lost a heck of a lot of potential software developers due to its seen inherent greed. This wasn't the first time in gaming world we heard about the problems of getting gouged on the SDK and couple that with the incredible cost of your graphical development machine it meant the lower end and more vibrant houses simply didn't enter the race as they could not compete with the large conglomerates and so many a game that could have been never was because of platform idiocy by the technology owners. Of course today with our high end Ryzen 7 machines capable of doing what a 50 grand machine did slowly back then, its a whole different ballgame with many a budding designed able to do a homebrew app or game fairly easily on their home PC but back then PC's were different beasts hence why you needed these astonishingly expensive machines to push your code and artwork into a viable cartridge or disc game.

When I saw this video pop up, I was literally baffled. Hadn't ever heard of a planned sequel, or even one as a remote ploy. Also, the M2 prototype looks like a Dreamcast & 3DO had a baby.

Wow, I didn't know it was going to have a DVD drive! This changes my perspective! A Nintendo 64 with a CD drive, but without Nintendo's first and second party software, and at a higher price--I didn't think would be compelling enough for customers, but the DVD drive changes things. Considering the amount of PlayStation 2s sold for its DVD player, this really could have shaked the gaming generation that was to come at the time, and gaming as we know it today.

I remember reading about the M2 back in the 90's and how exciting it was supposed to be. And then it just disappeared over night. This was a very interesting video. I didn't know that Panasonic just didn't even try when it came to marketing the M2 as a console. What a shame. I think it would have been an interesting alternative. But without the licensing fees for each of the games, there was no way the could have been competitive with the hardware, I guess? Oh well, history is just an absolute wash of what ifs and might have been occurrences. My favorite of those was the Amiga AAA platform. It was still in prototyping when Commodore went belly up. If it had come out on time, it could have been really fascinating.

It isn't such a crazy idea for the time. The N64 controller gets a lot of flak, especially in retrospect, but analog controls were an unknown quantity at the time. Imagine they hadn't caught on; the default N64 hand configuration would've been the left and right grips rather than the middle and right grips.

The M2 was only twice as powerful as N64. 700K polys were more like 500K-640K triangles with 15bit color output. What made the 3D0 more appealing than the N64 was it's 8MBs of ram. Video sub system was better for processing textures, something the N64 struggled. ACCLAIM developer Iguana claimed the N64 was more powerful at one point time. Keep in mind the 3DO did the same Atair did with the Jaguar. M2 had 32 bit chips in their system while marketing it as 64 bit. The memory was the only thing 64 bit about the M2. The games released in the arcades did not far beyond N64, Saturn games. Battle Tryst looks like a PS1 game to be honest. Total Vice might be the only game released that was beyond current Gen games.

Matsushita signed a terrible deal for 100 million. They had limited hardware rights and only " most of " the software royalty rights - in other words 3DO company would still get a portion of what software companies paid per title. The hardware was disastrously designed , one of the early developers said it had a " six month " learning curve. Ditching it was a smart move.
@MrTBoneSF
@MrTBoneSF 2 года назад
Don't know where you heard/read that. Compared to its contemporaries, the M2 (and the 3DO) had very straightforward architectures supported by a robust OS and detailed documentation and source code for most everything. The Saturn, N64, PSX were much harder to develop for because most times you received some badly translated hardware manuals, library and compiler binaries that might not work on your desired dev environment (Mac, PC, Unix) with no source to modify, and maybe a few simple test programs that didn't show how to tap the power of the unique hardware.
@FantasyVisuals

@@MrTBoneSF one of the software developers reported a " workstation architecture " and stated it had a six month learning curve. The Saturn was the worst ( after jaguar with its assembly language ) due to bad rushed design , and the two CPUs interrupting each other
@MrTBoneSF
@MrTBoneSF 2 года назад
@@FantasyVisuals "one of the software developer's reported a 'workstation architecture'..." seems really vague and out of context (plus it's not attributed to anybody so it's very "I heard from a friend of a friend"). I guess if you were a SNES developer used to banging on a particular set of chips and registers, and suddenly dealing with an OS on a 3D architecture it would be a learning curve. Heck, the original 3DO was a machine that many developers cut their 32-bit/3D teeth on, so naturally their first few games took longer than they were used to. But that knowledge they could later use on Saturn and PSX. And things like a multi-tasking OS to do background streaming from the disc (a new thing in the cd-rom/32-bit era) were always part of the 3DO dev environments while devs initially had to roll their own on PSX and Saturn.

The license for any company to develop their own 3DO console was the first of many business decisions to really Backfire on 3DO itself. Because of different companies making the price of the console being already expensive enough, it was doomed to fail when other companies got involved.

I read my share of video game magazines as a kid in the '90s. I read up on the M2 and wanted to see it released. Had it been released, Sony wouldn't have stood a chance because we'd have already had consoles that could play DVDs.

Lady Decade, if possible can you start adding captions to your videos. I ask because I am hearing impaired & it helps me follow along with the video easier. Now onto enjoying another video deep dive that you have done for your fans.

Ah yes, the fabled Matsushita M2. The darling of glossy mag hype.

I would still change the lightning during the presentation. To something more warm. Thank you)

Next Generation Magazine were slobbering left and right over M2. I remember several issues with overly adoring write ups despite there not being any real content.

I remember reading about this in GameFan. It’s sometimes interesting to imagine what might have been. Do you already have a video about the Phantom? A game console that actually lived up to its name.

I love the music playing in the background of this video. Do you have a list of the tracks you used, @LadyDecade?

I think M2 hardware got used in at least one Konami arcade game. Seem to remember @lukemorse1 attempting to get his board working again.

Just think, in a few years the 3DO will probably be worth what it is used as it was new.
