The Story of Trails - Arios MacLaine
Here comes another episode in the ‘Story of Trails’ series, and this time we’ll be looking at the story of the Divine Blade of Wind himself, Arios MacLaine!
Like many other characters in this series, Arios has a difficult past, losing his wife, and witnessing his daughter’s loss of sight. As a result, the man resorts to desperate measures to ensure Crossbell doesn’t succumb to it’s inevitable fate. Though he’s not as prominent as some of the main members of the Crossbell cast, his role cannot be understated in the story of Trails.
Working with others to bring about a miracle, Arios slowly realizes that the younger brother of his good friend would become the light that Crossbell needed in these dark times, and he takes it upon himself to consistently test not only Lloyd Bannings, but the SSS as well.
Arios represents a character who fights for a brighter tomorrow, but unfortunately goes down the wrong path. Thankfully, Arios never truly loses sight of his own morals; he simply believes that the evil he is committing is sufficient for his daughter’s future. The fact that Arios consistently maintains his stalwart personality means he eventually becomes one of the SSS’s greatest allies in the fight for independence.
In light of this brilliant character, today in our ‘The Story of Trails’ series we’ll be delving into the background of Arios MacLaine, and recounting his steps through the Trails Universe. So sit back, relax, and let’s enjoy another dose of Trails Series lore!

Here we go, a video on my boy the Divine Blade of Wind himself! Arios is a pretty slick character. Despite not being a major player compared to others in the Crossbell arc, the man is still a prominent figure in the growth of the SSS. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him as the story progresses! Hope you enjoy this one, and let's chill with some more Trails lore!

The way of presentation of this series is the best, just finished the crosbell saga on february and boy it has the best story across all the games, and can't imagine a better presentation of a story by any kind of media, i really liked the foreshadowing on trails of cold steel stories and even how it ends the first two, but how you present the story around that is important, and falcom nailed it.

I was stunning when I realize Arios was behind of Crois Plan and take Kea. He is a good character and well built. You appreciate much more Arios's background in retrospective when you take some detail during the zero and Aono events. I am so happy for ending those game even before of playing Sora SC and TC; I don't regret.

It's beautiful really, he hasn't lost his sense of self despite the path he's chosen. If anything that must burden him more, as all these people in Crossbell are lauding him as this paragon of justice, but deep down he knows it's not true. Can you imagine people praising you for being something that you're not constantly, and realising that it's all a lie? That could easily break someone mentally.

Another great lore video from TKN! I find myself disliking Arios very much after what happens in the Crossbell arc. I mentioned it before in an episode of the podcast, but I almost see him as a villain for how he sells out. Like, I get wanting to protect Crossbell and his daughter but, he kinda just locks her up in Orchis Tower and then goes along with an authoritarian plan, which I feel is not only a betrayal of the SSS, but of what the Bracer Guild stands for. It bugs me because I love the Bracer Guild and how they always fight for what is right, even if some of them have a bit of an attitude (Agate!). Obviously that gives some depth to the character and some complexity to the overall storyline, but I still feel a bit betrayed and I'm going to have to make a conscious effort to give Arios a second chance in the future. 10/10!
@TheKisekiNut

Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, Blue! I was definitely taken aback when I realised Arios's betrayal, but he had witnessed the barriers around Crossbell, and he felt that there was no way to overcome them. Obviously he's been grief stricken with his wife's death, seeing that as his fault, not to mention Guy's and Shizuku's sight. And now he's forcing a child in KeA to a life of misery for Crossbell's benefit. And you can see he hates it, he hates everything that he's doing, but he believes that it's the only way the State can find true freedom. I think many people can relate to a character who feels so much desperation that they are willing to go to drastic measures in order to solve the issue. On top of that, he's recognised by everyone in Crossbell as this 'hero', the Bracer Guild constantly bombards him with requests to become an S rank bracer. They all see him as something that he knows he's not, and that must really weigh down on him. But I think with Lloyd and the SSS he saw there was another path that he could never find, and he takes it on himself to test and push the group forward over their journey. There's no doubt his path was the wrong one, but I can totally understand it, and I'm happy that he's found some redemption. I'm looking forward to seeing his role in the future games.

Hello mate, first of all thank you for all the content you provide. I love especially, your character rundown series, I really hope you will portrait as many people as you can. Arios is still one of my favourite male characters in the series, even with my "conflicting passion" for him in Ao. To be honest, only because of him in Zero, I was confident to leave my beloved child under his guard after IBC raid, to pursue main culprit in the game. Really fleshed out characters are in Crossbell duology I have to say. Btw. You really should consider patronite or something similar, as quality of your content deserves it. I just love those games for years already, and it's my favourite jrpg and developer of all time (and I'm nearly 40yrs old guy, who plays jrpgs since 1996). Your channel deserves much more attention. About quality, I like that you are talking slower, so when I show your videos to my friend, who isn't super deep into Kiseki lore, and he also isn't English native speaker, can understand all what you're saying. Please continue with this character miniseries, as it's something important for many - I personally just enjoy to listen all those informations even knowing it, but for people like my friend, who refuses to play Liberl arc until it comes to ps4 it's critical and I can tell you already, that your video for Renne make my friend to play on my pc first trilogy, as he was curious about it and wanted to experience it himself. Great video as always! Arios is such a well written character and I'm looking forward to seeing more of him? Can anyone tell me if he appears in CS4 or not? I'm also kind of wondering just how strong he is. Renne said in zero no kiseki that he could be as strong as Loewe. I'm wondering if he would be able to beat Aurelia in a fight. I would love to somehow see a massive tournament arc in the trails series with all the strongest characters matched up against each other. After all we still don't know just how strong Cassius and Ein are.
@TheKisekiNut
@TheKisekiNut 4 года назад
Thanks for watching mate! I think he's a great character myself, a guy who's lost hope for the State, and only believes a miracle can save it. I'll say now (SPOILER) He's not in CS4 from what I can see so far, but he will be in Hajimari. As for his strength, he is definitely up there, but Loewe has been stated as being stronger than Bo staff Cassius (in an interview by Kondo, don't know when). Loewe was the only enforcer that Arianrhod admitted could potentially surpass her, and the Steel Maiden is pretty much the strongest in the series as far as I'm concerned. Arios would definitely come below Cassius, he admits himself that he is not on the man's level.
@ceettopotat

@@TheKisekiNut wow, really? Loewe has been confirmed stronger than Cassius? I seriously did not expect that. Since he was always hyped up troughout the Liberl arc I naturally assumed he was stronger than Loewe. @@ceettopotat He's been confirmed as stronger than Bo staff Cassius, but weaker than Sword Cassius. That's why Cassius himself is a bit of an enigma in the series, as Zin has stated before that Cassius never lost his ability when transitioning to the staff, but you could argue since he's not able to use his Eight Leaves techniques, he's naturally going to be weaker with the staff. That's the issue, power scaling is very difficult in this series, and though I'd like to do a video on it someday, it'll be filled with speculation. I would need to finish CS4 at least before I consider taking it on.

My issue with Arios is that he faces no consequences for his actions. Richard was thrown in prison for the stuff he pulled in Liberl but Arios gets off clean despite him participating in child trafficking and attempted murder of a police officer...that's not even counting his involvement in the conspiracy. I kind of mentioned Ian's reason for it in this video, in that his family was killed by the proxy war between Erebonia and Calvard, the same incident which killed Lloyd's and Towa's parents. He basically became vengeful after that. I don't think Crois lost anyone, but it hurt him to see the state of Crossbell. He could see firsthand the issues it faced being the IBC president, and he wanted a way out of it. Granted he and Ian went down the wrong path, but I understand their reasoning for doing so; they simply wanted a safer Crossbell.

I was really unsatisfied with Arios's explanations and justifications at the end of the series, and how it felt like he didn't try his best to win. I still have many doubts and questions about pretty much all the villains except for Bell, but in hindsight I think I understand Arios. I think his guilt and shame was so strong at that time that he was simply unable to speak frankly with Lloyd. The way he talked to Shizuku at the time after Kea's transformation kind of showed that not only was he fine with being the villain of the situation, but he in fact wanted to lose, as if he didn't believe in the cause anymore. But I was disappointed in that he wasn't being honest with Lloyd. This made that part feel very disappointing. I wanted a better closure, and there must have been a better closure off screen, or otherwise I don't think Lloyd would have trusted Arios to get back into Kea's life.
@Relisoc
@Relisoc 4 года назад
Yeah I think he was so overcome with guilt that he wanted to completely burn the bridge, hence why he tried to falsely confess to killing guy. He knew Lloyd wouldn’t believe it though
@TheKisekiNut
@TheKisekiNut 4 года назад
He probably thought that coming clean with Lloyd right off the bat would be too much for the rookie detective to take. Arios himself is battle hardened and mentally strong, but he still struggles to hold all of these burdens. I think he believes that if he had told Lloyd earlier, it might of broke the man. So he tests him, he challenges the SSS and Lloyd especially to grow and find their own ideal. I believe that come the incident at the Mirror Castle, he had decided that Lloyd was finally ready to hear the truth. In terms of hiding Lawyer Ian's involvement in the final battle, I think it's just his guilt taking over. He firmly believed that HE was responsible for Guy's death, he didn't see anyone else at fault even with Grimwood firing the gun. You can see unlike many, Arios never loses his sense of justice, or his sense of self. He's honourable as an individual, so it pains him to partake in something like the Azure-Zero Project, and maybe he just doesn't want Shizuku to see her father stoop so low, though of course she's well aware of the situation. I feel really bad for the man, he believes that nothing can save Crossbell, and he's willing to go against his ideals to find this 'miracle', it's a tale of desperation.
@pite9
@pite9 4 года назад
@@TheKisekiNut I think Arios and Guy had different visions for dealing with evil. Arios had an unusually pessimistic outlook, thinking that the greater power always win, no matter which side is just, while Guy was the ultimate optimist, thinking that it was because the good doubted themselves too much that evil was allowed to win. Trails of Azure is kind of like a battle between those two solutions. You can either have the absolute power, which no human can oppose, and use that power for good, or you grant everybody freedom and try to instill courage so that the good can fight evil and prevail naturally. Maybe when Arios realized that it was only him and him alone that had stood in the way, preventing Lloyd from saving Kea and foiling the plan, he realized that Guy may have been right after all. By Lloyd winning it meant that Crossbell (in some ways) had to be sacrificed, but the idea is that by spreading Guy's ideals to more and more ppl, eventually they will succeed both at getting independent and getting rid of the domestic corruption.

Lawyer Ian even admits in the Azure Tree that he intends to forge a world that he 'thinks' everyone wants. And that in itself lacks empathy and forethought. It's an age old issue, does one person make the rules and forge the identity of a nation, or do we leave it to a due process which is inherently slower?
