AH, Christmastime… when the nip in the air signals the coming of the season of giving. Hopefully COVID won’t be the only thing we give to each other this year, but it’s not exactly the first time that we’ve had problems this time of year. In fact, the late 60s saw more than it’s fair share of political and cultural upheaval. At the center of that was the most outspoken of the 4 Beatles, and even before he’d officially left the group, John Lennon had begun to use that most awesome of soapboxes to make his voice heard. This is the story of a Christmas song that was largely forgotten for decades before it’s re-emergence as a top ten standard. The story of John and Yoko's "Happy Xmas (War is Over!)" Next, on this Christmas special of “If Guitars Could Speak…”

You know I have grown up with so much different music somebody said to me the other day that Christmas isn't Christmas until you hear Bing Crosby's White Christmas and then I said well Christmas isn't Christmas until you hear Elvis Presley's Blue Christmas and then I thought about John Lennon whose music I grew up with and I said Christmas isn't Christmas until you hear John legend's War is Over, or as most people know it, And So This is Christmas. This is definitely the best Christmas song. 12/8/80 may have been 41 years ago but that date had stayed indelibly etched in my mind. I don't even mention you know whose name who shot him and blamed it on The catcher in the Rye this guy just wanted to become famous and he ruined so many people's lives.Then I thought about how we were all crying, wearing black arm bands going to visit Strawberry Fields. Then when John and Yoko came out with Imagine all I could think is how could such a pacifist be gunned down right in front of his home. Then I thought about Freddie Mercury auditioning for the Imagine song and I remembered he did a Christmas song but I couldn't remember what it was so I googled and found it and I said WOW these four songs are definitely going down as the best Christmas songs ever written. Thanks guitar man this was a great video. I really love music

It kind of dropped off here for a while whereas Beatle and Lennon fans knew of it as it showed up on his greatest hits compilation, but being in the rotation of “Christmas Classics,” it did take a few years off here and there for some reason. I think it’s entrenched now though.

Why didn’t you mention John stole the tune from the hollies song stewball,where’s the plagiarism police on this🤔
@DetroitStars
@DetroitStars 2 года назад
Actually, Stewball goes back to the late 1700s and is in the public domain. Besides the Hollies, many other artists recorded versions of the song. Peter, Paul and Mary, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly and The Weavers are just a few.

John Lennon should have kept his mouth shut. Sorry, love his music, not his politics. Nothing wise about his wise ass mouth.

In my opinion, anyone preaching peace, love and friendship is OK in my book. What’s the alternative? Hate and intolerance? Way too much energy expended for that 👎🏻
@jasoncdebussy
@jasoncdebussy 2 года назад
@@TheGuitarHistorian I would imagine that the overwhelming majority of the population would want peace - in all my long years on this planet I have never met anyone who promoted wars. Advocating peace doesn't prevent you from being stupid, obnoxious, argumentative, selfish, unfriendly or any number of other human traits. I'm suggesting that Lennon was all of those, by the way 😁
@TheGuitarHistorian
@TheGuitarHistorian 2 года назад
@@jasoncdebussy he was a complicated man. He beat people up, he cheated on both of his wives and he changed his story around depending on who the listener was. Not a perfect man by any stretch. I agree with that. But I also think in the last years that he understood that and actively tried to change. With… mixed success LOL
@jasoncdebussy
@jasoncdebussy 2 года назад
@@TheGuitarHistorian I would say that was fair 👍 To be honest, I try as much as I can not to delve too deeply into the lives of my musical heroes because like the rest of us "mortals" they tend to have feet of clay and are imperfect. Musically I'm a huge fan of The Beatles, as a band and individually and I hate anything tarnishing my adulation of them ☹️
