For the algorithm: It is sad that the way how the youtube game plays out, videos like this are discouraged, since they are in a way a piece of art. And thusly they have a merit of theit own. These insights into magic are always great and serve a purpose. Magic has been around for so long that some of these cards and stories feel like actual history documentaries about ancient history… which crazy to me since this is a card game
It is indeed a card game, but what makes it feel like history is the people :) especially the pioneers in the early days of the game like Frank. I really hope you like this one!
@@CardmarketMagic I did and you are right what makes these videos great is the voices of people that care so much for this game and thank you for that. This really felt like a Rhystic Studies video, shows how great and varied you guys are as content creators.
Clicked because I thought it was Rhystic Studies just based off of the thumbnail and length. Instead, it's my other beloved MTG channel. I'm not upset in the slightest, I love these longform history videos. Would be cool if someone with schedule control let these nice passion projects fill the vast empty spaces that exist between other longform channels' uploads.
"And we all remember that episode of the French revolution" absolutely killed me...and the Queen for that matter lol A mix of good history and good humor! Always a fan of these types of videos!
Affinity has always been one of my favorite mechanics in the game if it’s artifacts you can just add the card without thinking too much about it thank you for all of the history I love how the channel has grown
I like the mechanic from a game design perspective, but the thing we often learn is this: Cost reduction mechanics are dangerous. Delve: Treasure Cruise, Dig through Time Phyrexian mana: Gitaxian Probe, Dismember Affinity (for artifacts): *watches video* I would be willing to bet that, if you counted the number of banned cards in non-rotating formats that cost zero mana and/or had a way to reduce its cost, it would have the highest number by a long shot.
@@alexkuzela9266 a lot better than some other guests they have on. Cardmarket is based in Germany and Frank is from The Netherlands. I imagine it's just that Frank is a very busy man, unlike Mengucci, the LRR crew, or the people from MTGGoldfish, his job isn't content creation, so it's probably harder to justify taking a few days off to do something like this.
I would love to see more content like this! You guys are easily my favorite MTG channel and I'm always looking forward to your next video, keep up the incredible work!
Oh wow! This video single-handedly allowed me to get my degree, fixed my car, and cured my cat of epilepsy! No other form of video could do that! The Cardmarket higher-ups would be fools not to let Carl do more of these, as this is nothing short of a miracle!
Hands down these are absolutely the best MTG videos on the internet i lived through all of this stuff and hearing everything i already knew with the reciepts to back it up makes me happy to know those time won't be forgotten.
I really appreciate these videos. Despite everyone saying, "Anything you put on the internet is there forever," there's increasingly more lost media and lost history because people just don't care enough to archive it or tell its story. So, having historical snapshots like this is valuable for those of us who are interested.
It’s fascinating to watch these as someone who started in Battle for Zendikar, I’m an engrained player with a bunch of experience, but I never went through prior major events and they’re fascinating to get an introspective of ☺️
After a line of videos with much higher tempo, silly premises and a lot of views, this feels like a return to something that feels like a passion project. These history videos with Karsten are some of the best things I've seen on youtube and I wish the algorith loved them more. Just know that you are contributing to keep an important piece of history alive for a lot of people who heavily enjoy it. Thank you!
Karl, this video is exceptional. I lived the days of the Mirrodin block when I was in uni, and I remember reading all that you have told us in the video both in magazines and internet. This was a very emotional video. I hope your bosses let you keep doing this type of stuff.
Oh I wish I had access to those magazines! It was so hard finding information about what was only 20 years ago 🤯 I'm really thrilled that you enjoyed the video :) have a wonderful day
@@CardmarketMagic I now live in the UK, but next time I go back to my parents in Spain I will try to find them if those magazines. They would be in Spanish though, they were called Urza (the first and most famous in Spain) and Serra. Just one more thing; your videos are fantastic, they have rekindled my interest in magic after 20 years of not playing. I am about to buy my first commander deck using cardmarket. That is my bit of support for you guys
this is one of the most perfect videos i've ever seen in this platform. the storytelling, the pace, the jokes and the knowledge. just amazing! i really hope Carl continues to do videos like this, i would watch them again and again just for support!
I want to really say I appreciate the team that makes these videos. The writing, direction and editing lead to a really great storytelling style that is very engaging. You guys normally put out really good content but somehow you keep upping the level. Great job.
Unfortunately, there isn't really a team making these. That is why I always have to ask for engagement when I make them. They take me months on the side of making regular videos. I really hope one day they pick up as much as our gameplay videos, which take much less time, so that I get to make more of them :) luckily I get to pick the brain of incredible people like Frank & Tobi for the videos
Hardened scales is my modern deck of choice, quite fun and similar play patterns to early affinity, and I am glad to learn about its past (indirectly).
I love these longform videos. Not only do I feel like I know more (as someone who started playing in 2022). But also, learning about little anecdotes like the ornithopter story. This long-form content is a lot more interesting and the extra effort is well-noticed. Maybe not by the algorithm, but by magic fans.
Soon we'll have "negative cost" spells: spells that adds you mana or cards in hand as an alternative casting cost. Yes, no other costs: just mana and/or cards added. 2025, I believe in you
I'm basically that guy that destroyed you and your vampire deck when you first started playing. I teach kids to play Magic after school, and whemever a kid thinks they've solved the game, I pull out my old Affinity deck (with some updates), and just rip them apart. I want everyone to know there's always a bigger fish out there so they never get too complacent or prideful.
This video about the history of affinity and artifacts is a really great video, and I'm glad Carl was able to make it thanks to his bosses seeing all of the supportive comments like this one.
As someone who doesnt play magic but loves this channel, i enjoy videos that delve into the rich history of the game. Seeing that your editor in chief is a main part of the history of this deck was a big reveal to me that made me enjoy the video all the more
Literally, the ONLY group u never imagined being in this Channel. I saw them when i was 19, and the shirt is still upstairs. Thanj you drumeo. That was AMAZING
I love your history videos, and I think they are invaluable. It's really important that you always include interviews with people who have a real attachment to the subject of the video so it never feels like a dry recap of events. Tbh, I always get a bit sentimental by the end even though I witnessed none of it and don't have a personal connection. I hope Cardmarket bosses allow you to make more of videos like this.
Carl, if you can see this, I love every deep dive video you’ve made in this vein and am eagerly waiting for the next. You do such a good job exploring every aspect while still keeping it an entertaining watch/listen. Thank you and please make more!
Comment for the algorithm, but also as appreciation for the work put into these videos by Carl and the crew. You guys make some of the highest quality mtg content.
I really love when you do documentary episodes. You put emotion and story into them that make me care about something as small as the history of affinity.
It's always nice to see longer form videos like this, especially from Carl and his enthusiasm! Hopefully more of these can be done and we can see more like it!!
I love these magic history lessons! They're always really well done and interesting. I think the firsthand knowledge Frank brings to the video is a highlight for me, and I love documentary style edits you do. Please keep making more, Carl! :D
It's so cool to look back at Magic's history and see how and why things changed and what impacts it had later on. And having someone like Frank Karsten who knows the ins and outs of seemingly every nuance is the best way to learn about it!
These videos always get me charged up! I remember being a kid with a old empty Cade Cod chip bucket with my first Magic: the Gathering cards I kept in my attic crawlspace from the Portal 2 player starter set. I started playing Magic back around the time when Mirrodin first came out and its still one of my favorite sets of all time. Good ole Disciple plays! Hearing about the old past of Magic and the stories directly from such high caliber players like Frank and with you being as passionate and energetic about the subject makes for an amazing watch!
Carl, you outdid yourself with this one - absolutely loved the way this was put together. I'm also totally with Frank: I miss modern affinity, always loved playing it while we still could!
I'm thrilled that you enjoyed it :D and modern Affinity is such a wonderful deck :) so incredibly powerful but so easy to hose out at the same time. I'm one of the people who think they could unban the artifact lands 👀
The strange history videos are some of my favourite videos that the Cardmarket team puts out. So much insight into this awesome game. Thank you so much Carl!
As a new player these videos have been an excellent history lesson of prevalent archetypes and how they shaped the game. Please keep making these videos!!
Affinity has been my favorite archetype since I get stomped by it when starting playing. I've been playing it since it have my own money to buy my cards and I try to collect all the cards that have been part of the list during its history. Great video!
As a lot of other people in the comments, im here to support Carl's mission to do story of videos or just longer videos in general. They are really good and I hope we get more of them.
The way you edit together the different interviews and weave in your own commentary is peak. Hope you can make as many of these history videos as you want!
Thank you Carl. Frank. Tobi. Cardmarket. I was never a fan of affinity, but this is a video ill encourage, a game ive loved, and content I never stop appreciating. Thanks!
I watch basically every card kingdom video that comes out. I love this format so much as a magic nerd. I started playing when original Eldraine came out so I missed out on alot of this stuff. I love learning about the history. Please do more of this!
