if i was in a desert island situation where the only two games available to me were world of tanks and prey 2017 i'd pick tank game over boring "immersive sim" any day
I still think that Prey 2017 would've been better off having its own unique name free from the emotional baggage carried from Human Head's original entries. Reusing the "Prey" name for the 2017 game was not a smart move. Especially considering that it came out right after Prey 2's development history was revealed to the public.
I ignored Prey 2017 for a few years after release due to lack of interest based on all the drama (personally I didn't think Prey 2 looked that good and it also had very little to do with the original so it wasn't because I was mad about it getting cancelled). I eventually picked it up cheap after trying the demo* and it was a good game. They should never have used the Prey name. *So many games i've picked up that I otherwise would not have because of demos. Devs/pubs need to learn the asset demos are and need to make more.
@@executable3 HumanHead confirmed that Tommy had an important role in the cancelled Prey 2 game so it DID had a lot to with the first game. The overall environmets and rich variety of enemy designs looked promising, hope they reconsider picking up the project where it left off, they could do so much more with the current technology
Every game where you play as a bounty hunter is just cursed to fall. Just look at the hell that was Star Wars 1313. Singleplayer Bounty hunter games just aren't meant to be
@@deathisnear2424 It's true! Another example can be Hunt: Showdown, A lot of people don't know about it and it's a fantastic game! Bounty hunter games are cursed
Remember all you saw was trailers and videos of demos. That doesn't mean the game was actually good or salvageable. Look at Cyberpunk 2077. I think the decision to call the Arkane game Prey is questionable, but at least we got a great game.
It is hilarious to me that Bethesda claims to have canceled Prey 2 over quality issues, yet they put out games like Skyrim & Fallout 76 that aren't fully fixed to this day
Fully fixed is such ambiguous term, like ask yourself this is there any game that is even fully fixed? Its clear youre just being bias because you were disappointed by them in the past. Im not sure either you havent played these games currently or just have a potato pc, but they literally fixed major game breaking bugs. Theres a reason skyrim is re release like a million time which is stupid if they didnt fix the bugs, and eversince the disastrous launch of fallout 76 its at least heard the community and prolly out of guilt made the battle pass free for all. I dont care about bethesda at all, theyre just a big company who have a lot of money. I just hate people who are dishonest just because its more convenient for them.
@@guidorussoheck2100 yeah, honestly, i have the feeling that Prey 2 could have been one of those gigantic letdown in the gaming industry, and if it was released would be put aside names like Duke Nukem Forever, Alien Colonial Marines, Cyberpunk 2077 and so on. Didn’t have a lot of faith in Human Head tbh
The new PREY is one of my favorite games of all time but It really should have been named something like Neural Shock. Probably would have helped more with the sales too.
@@cuppacoffee1572 As a System Shock enjoyer I'm so glad you said "Neuroshock", I was literally about to say the same thing. Dipanjan you were so close to the perfect name! That's actually what I'm going to call the game from now on. The game had bugger all to do with the original "Prey" story anyway, it deserved its own brand. And we deserved to get to play Prey 2. I'm really sad the gaming industry seems to be so full of shitheads.
You guys don't realize that Human Head weren't some kind of R&D house or something, they just took licensed engines and made pretty good games out of the technology that existed. They aren't innovators. They were the cleanup crew on Prey, even.
Do you remember back in the day when we finally saw the trailer lol good times Side Note I remember when my older brother didn't believe me how good mass effect would be when I saw it in wal mart in the xbox magazine lol good times
I didn’t play Prey 2017 until 3 years later. What a fantastic game. If it was named something else I would have played it way sooner. Something similar to System Shock or Bioshock since it clearly a spiritual success to SS and I absolutely love those games.
Which is funny since BioShock was always billed as a System Shock successor, so has Prey 2017....but Prey 2017 is so much closer to the spirit of System Shock than what BioShock ever was. The issue I had with BioShock then and even more so now, is how incredibly mediocre it's core combat is in a game so heavily focused on being "system shock-esque" which itself never outright prioritized combat. And it's heavy reliance on linearity and lack of environmental options of getting around. Much like the titles Prey 2017 was heavily influenced by, there are just so many options available to you that is much more than just "do I go shooty shooty, bonk, or hand look cool ability?". Need to get to a high place because you want to avoid a difficult fight ahead early on? Build a ladder out of random scenery items. Want to stealth? Stealth is actually viable because enemies don't insta aggro once you get into their aggro radius. Prey in a lot of ways is closer to OG Deus Ex than it is to the other 2 titles.
@@torrb420 ah, yes, the typical response of a fanboy of X is to over-focus on the thing that came out directly after that was like it, but not good enough in the eyes of that fanboy. You are like the Morrowind fanboys and equally pathetic. The person you respond to is discussing how the naming and marketing failed the game - but you need to get your fanboyish on because they mentioned SS and BS in the same sentence. You are pathetic, and easily trolled.
Gun (released in 2005) for the PS2 and Xbox 360 also featured a Native American protagonist and he was awesome. We really do need more games with them, I feel like there aren’t many.
Prey 2 looked so good, the world looked beautiful. Holding someone has a shield and them having a conversation with you while you do is awesome. The guns also looked bad ass. Honestly looks like it would have been a classic
Never hurts to talk to a game dev friend and seeing if they can make something similar we live in an era where we are restarting games from the beginning and to hell to all the AAA studios.
Prey 2 is such a shame, they have interesting concept, gameplay, and story. Wish they'd release any version of the game, even if it was incomplete. They cancelled for petty reason when they almost completed the game. And they said the reason was *"It was not up to their standards"* then they released Fallout 76 few years later. That was a F lie
Good yes....Best shooters ever lol no......It wasn't innovative there were other games that were already doing what Prey did, they just borrowed mechanics.
I greatly enjoyed the multiplayer. Walking on walls/ceilings and portals... chaotic area shooter fun. I still boot up the old 360 every now and again for the single player
@@lutherheggs451 I think is fair to say that many more games, where inspired by Prey info and early E3 demos, than Human Head Prey "borrowed" from other games. Prey 1 portal tech, was being discussed and shown working, years before Narbacular drop or Valve Portal even existed, wall walking, was on a past 3DRealms game and seen in a different form, in the old Aliens VS Predator games and spirit walking, that imo was pretty much new, at lest to me, but I could be wrong, most games today share many many features between themselves, that imo is hard to say, this or that is unique anymore.
Heck yeah, added it to my hoard of free epic games as well. I haven't played any of them yet, just started with Nioh, but shoutout to epic for blessing us with the ability to build a huge library of awesome games for free. I've got one heck of a backlog on Epic alone! :P
@@TheArklyte I'm not certain about that, no doubt it's probably part of whatever contract they've got with epic tho. I heard awhile back epic was paying pretty good to get competitive, no idea if that's still the case.
Or a new reboot completely unrelated but keeping the killer space base and alien civilization concepts... both games blew my mind for being so different to other games made in their time.
The original Prey was fantastic -- but this pathetic immersive sim, with that ridiculous storyline about teaching empathy to amorphous walking tar blobs is extremely ridiculous.
@@rosesareredbutzerglingssti9290Prey 2017 is fantastic and that's an L opinion bud, it's right up there with System Shock and Deus Ex, the original installment was a dumpsterfire. Arkane Prey is best the IP's ever been. You're just another low IQ fortnite kiddy In fact I'd rather It wasnt named Prey because you get all these stupid comparisons and lumping when they are clearly made for different demographics, one's made to be a System Shock clone and other's a poor doom clone.
God. I want the real Prey 2 so badly still. The Prey Reboot or whatever you want to call it is pretty cool, I don't think it should have the Prey name though. Everytime a cool bounty hunter game is gonna come out, it always goes bad. Prey 2, Star Wars 1313, etc.
Prey 2017 is called so because Bethesda owned the IP and asked Arcane Studios to name it like that. I havent watched the video yet so I'm sorry if it was mentioned there already
@@Curt_Randall My theory is: 1. Old IPs need less advertising 2. Having an IP not being used is, you know, useless. I blame Bethesda (or Zenimax) for the game being called so, even though it sounds cool and even appropriate, in the end I think it would've been better off having "Shock" in its name, Psychoshock or something. Absolutely love the game btw, it's in my top 3 games of all time.
@@Curt_Randall They didn't. The project head wanted the name. Bethesda had the license for the trademark, the dude said "Hey, that's a cool name." and that's pretty much how it went. There's a video about Arkane's Prey over on the Noclip channel, that interviews the dude where it goes over why it was named Prey. Obviously I paraphrased, but the main idea was the same. Prey's just a cool name. He wasn't wrong thinking that, just wrong in calling it that after what happened with Prey 2.
As much as I wanted prey 2. Prey(2017) ended up being such a pleasant surprise and one of my favorite game of all time. I did not expect a spiritual successor to BioShock and system shock when I started playing it and honestly that comparison doesn’t even do it justice because it does it’s own thing so well.
@@torrb420 I couldn’t say for certain, cause I haven’t actually played it yet. Cant get my hands on a ps5 and I’m too broke for a decent PC right now :(
The original did better than I expected. It was fun and had a good story. It even checks the diversity box before it became nauseating corporate propaganda it is now.
Just here to defend Prey 2017 and to tell anyone who hasn’t played it yet, go out and play it. If you like Bioshock, System Shock you will like Prey 2017.
Man I wish Prey 2 was released instead of the new "Prey"! It seemed it was going to be a banger! Maybe one day we'll get a true sequel for the original game!
prey for 360 was part of my late childhood. such a creative imaginative world. i even tripped on mushrooms watching a friend play it. there are only a handful of studios that do this kind of amazing artwork. games like portal and super mario galaxy and psychonauts... i was so disapointed that the new prey had nothing to do with the original. such a shame to steal a name like that. thats like taking the name pink floyd or tupac or queen and trying to become relevant imagine if prey2 came out and tommy was still the protaganist but he had to flee from earth due to the events in the 360 game. he turns bounty/vigalante in a alienated cyberpunky type world. and since he is cherekee, he has that cyberpunky bounty with a taste of native american look to him. bam new xbox character logo name next to marcus fenix and master chief. thanks for the nostaglic videos
I find myself wondering if the name "Prey" is just cursed. Each game had their own version of development hell somehow, which would normally make sense if all 3 came from the same place, but 1 of them was completely and totally separate from the other 2.
@@Reloaded2111 Prey 2017 didn't actually flop hard. Yes, the launch was rough, due to very poor marketing from Bethesda, but the game still sold over a million copies eventually, and with its release on Game Pass with a 60 FPS boost, the game is currently in its best state and is being played by many more people now.
This still breaks my heart. Although prey 2017 was my favorite game of that year it would have been awesome to play prey2. Anyhow let's hope Microsoft brings her back with the new protagonist from 2017.
I never understood people who refuse to give Prey 2017 a chance solely because of the name. I mean yeah, I agree that it should have been named differently, but at the end of the day it's just a name. It doesn't make the game itself any worse. It's like refusing to eat French fries because you don't like France.
The game I wanted to play was *_Prey 2_*-- a sequel for one of my favorite games (Prey 2006). And I would be playing that game for now if was not for Bethesda's greed. So forgive me if I have zero interest in that stupid immersive sim and its ridiculous storyline about crazy scientists trying to teach empathy to alien blobs of tar/smoke.
There’s another reason wanna know why prey for the gods s a very hyped up shadow of the colossus love letter game name changed? Well bethesda outright threatened the devs of the game to change the name of the game because they were worried it would confuse the audience between both game s
Prey 2’s cancellation hurt quite a bit, right up there with Silent Hills and Star Wars 1313. The original Prey was one of my fav games on the 360. Spent countless hours on the campaign and multiplayer. Unfortunately, I didn’t get very far into the Prey remake. Just wasn’t the same. Made me miss Prey 2 even more.

I got the newest Prey on sale about a year or two ago on steam. At first it looked like a horror game which is probably why I didn't pay much attention to it at the time, but I think I had seen a trailer or some gameplay later on that caused me to seek it out plus it was on sale so figured why not. It turned out to be a pretty fun game and was kinda upset that they didn't seem to market it that well. And because of all that it probably didn't sell well enough for them to make a sequel to it so now we wont get one and that stinks.
Just started playing Prey 2017 and I love it. Arkane is currently working on Redfall and probably working on the Xbox Series port of Deathloop. But, I hope that the rumors of the studio working on a sequel to Prey is true and prefer that than Redfall and a Deathloop port.
The original Prey caught me by surprise, I had zero information about what it was but once I started playing it, it swallowed me whole. And what a ride it was. I really hoped for a direct sequel back then.
The worst part is that Prey 2 is like 90% done and is just now sitting on a shelf somewhere at bethesda all because of their legal bullshit for trying to bleed the company.
@@ebenezerspludge8369 I don't even think they can legally do that if they wanted (and Bethesda would be scummy enough to try it) I remember reading that they brought in Obsidian to come and finish it like they do with a bunch of other unfinished or busted RPG's but discovered the engine was owned by Human Head and since they didn't agree to get bought and Bethesda bleed them until there wasn't a company left forced them to abandon it completely.
No surprise that a greedy publisher was involved yet again in many of the downfalls mentioned here. In many ways I am grateful, as the Prey we got in 2017 was in my opinion pivotal for the future of the immersive sim genre.
Sad because no game since has done "immersive sim" as well as it did. Not Arkane's future offerings or any of the "never actually going to be released" indie on Steam.
I remember playing the first prey demo on the Xbox 360. I loved it so much and thought they nailed the mood and setting so well. I explored as much as I could of that restaurant.
I still want Prey 2 that was being helmed by the defunct Human Head studios and being published by Bethesda before being out right cancelled in the end. That game was shaping up to epic. Like Cyberpunk 2077 hyped epic without being betrayed in the end.
Both games are really awesome and need to be played by everyone. I played the first one a couple of times, and it was really innovative when it came out. Prey by arcane studios is just a masterpiece
I remember the Prey 2 "gameplay" trailer had me hyped. I really thought it was gunna be the next big game. I did really enjoy the newer Prey game, but also would've loved to try what they originally had planned for the sequel.
I really adore the original Prey from 2006, I still have a copy of it for my 360. The 2017 reboot on the other hand was such a large departure from the original 2006 version I just couldn't truly enjoy it as a "Prey" game. I ended up not finishing it as I just wasn't feeling any soul the original had. I've debated on trying it again with a fresh perspective though because so many people really like the 2017 reboot, but the only way I'm personally going to be able to accomplish that is if I treat as something other than Prey. That game really should have been titled something else, calling the 2017 version "Prey" is like calling Goldeneye Rogue Agent a "007" game which is far from the truth.
The 2017 prey should be treated as a system shock spiritual successor, try to get over your bias against it. It's a great game with an amazing setting and cool mechanics
@@nobobonobo The bias was already set when they decided to not only use a completely unrelated series but to also use the exact same name. You can like it but can't stop people from being biased.

fantastic video, prey 2006 and prey 2 concepts will always have a place in my heart, i hope both games get the sequel they deserve at one point in the future, in the mean time if anyone is interested in human heads prey and the investigation of its sequel, my channel is dedicated to just that, feel free to drop by.
I loved the original PREY. The fictious story of the Cheerokee gave it a real story that is unique until today. ZeniMax killed the follow up for no reason in my eyes.
I kind of enjoyed the first Prey when it came out on the Xbox 360 and was actually hyped for the cancelled sequel as the trailer looked amazing at the time. It's good that the game kind of survived in name and concept only and wasn't just lost forever.
Christ this reawakened a desire to play the Prey sequel. One of the first times I played so much attention to a game development cycle and updates. The original prey was so much fun and different to what had I played at point. There was so much potential.....potential we will never see again.
The original prey is one of the best games ever made. the beginning intro with don’t fear the reaper playing is iconic and sets the tone for the rest of the games out there atmosphere and weapons. It’s unfortunate this game is difficult to find. I didn’t make it very far into the new prey games. They’re just not that original. Tommy is one of the best protagonist and their character development is the best any game has done since. The art bell random radio streams as you explore the ship are also a keen atmospheric addition. Prey2006>prey2016
I absolutely love The first Prey game. I really wish Prey 2 was completed and released as back in the day, it’s visual concept and gameplay looked so refreshing, and still does when watching it again today! The first was a Superb game, worthy kill count too!
Oh yes, more videos about Prey ! The more people get interested in Prey 2017, the more chances we have to see another immersive sim. It's such an underrated genre... Still waiting for the System Shock remake I backed years ago btw...
@@zoom0451 Why? because of the boring aliens? The "complexity"? The "originalty and creativity"? Kid, Prey 2017 lacks any interesting lore and enemies and complexity, originalty and creativity are not essential to make a good game. They are just features and depending of the kind of game you are interested in playing, *_irrelevant and unimportant!_* Me? I prefer shooters over "immersive sims". In other words, Prey 2006 and Prey are, to me, far more interesting and fun than Arkane's "NoPrey".
I've always been of the view prey 2017 is more true to the original concept of prey than what we were suppose to get from prey 2 , while the prey 2 was a narrative sequel using the main character from the first game to be our literal spirit guide until we free him, it sounded like it was going to lose the appeal of a normal human who is trapped on a ship full of aliens instead making it more of a star wars "aliens exist and they're cool people"
Just finished up my second playthrough of Prey (2017) a few hours ago. I really loved Prey 2006 and was really excited for Prey 2, and I think that disappoint is what kept me from giving Prey 2017 a try. I'm glad I did. It's my favorite game. I haven't fallen in love with a game this much since i played the original deus ex.
Prey was an incredible game for Xbox 360! I just bought the new one known it’s not a continuation but more a reboot of the franchises still excited to see what they end up with!!! *cross my finger*🙌 Thank you for making another great video in your awesome collection.
Excellent video as always. Both the 2006 video game and the Arkane Studios game are great games. The world needs to learn more about Prey because the games have such an interesting history.
Don't get me wrong, I was one of those people who was absolutely blown away by the trailers, and completely devastated by the cancellation of it. To the point that I refused to play Arkane's Prey out of spite. Ironically enough though, after giving it a try, it's become one of my most beloved games. But I think that ultimately, Prey 2 wouldn't have lived up to the hype. I'm not saying that it wouldn't have been a great game, but after years of it being gone, and hearing all the stories about it, the game seems less like something real. Instead it feels much like a game many people poured their hopes and dreams into what it "could be" rather than what was feasibly possible, for any dev. Which is pretty similar to what happened with Cyberpunk 2077 (ignoring the horrible launch and countless bugs). The concept of an "open world bounty-hunter sim on a cyberpunk-esque alien world" leaves a lot to interpretation, especially with how open-ended the trailers were, and I think a lot of people projected what they envisioned onto it. Which is why nowadays it's reached almost mythical status after its cancellation. The cancellation of the game has done more for the title than the actual release could have ever done. Would I have loved Prey 2? Absolutely. Am I pissed that it never saw the light of day? You bet your ass. Do I think it would have been the greatest game of all time (as evidenced by the constant discussion about it)? Probably not. Do I wish that I'm wrong, and if the game released it would have been an incredible masterpiece that's still played to this day? Darn tootin.
Could you please do either a tragedy episode on Bethesda Softworks space faring, underachieving RPG Starfield? Or a history of Fallout episode for 2024?
Crazy how to this day High on Life has probably been the closest to what Prey 2 looked like it might be. Seeing that old footage still makes me want a version of that, and it's wild that it just went away. Future looks meh wit Redfall, even seeing it's Arkane working with ex-Human Head Studios people. Also, remembering that basically the last thing they did was The Quiet Man isn't the most faith inspiring, but here's hoping popping vamps is fun!
For me this game changed everything. Shame it ended everything. A true 3d game in more ways than (well play it). Thank you all who worked on it for a truly ground breaking experience. Not repeated as yet.
Pretty funny coincidence how both Prey (the 2006 game) & Prey (the new 2022 Predator movie) feature Native American protagonists fighting an alien threat despite being completely separate IPs
The only problem with Arcane's Prey is that it has nothing to do with the original game, and it was only named Prey so Bethesda could capitalize on their IP. It's not even a reboot, but a completely different game. We'll never know if Prey 2 would have been a good game, but it certainly looked better than the Rune 2 dumpster fire.
The world wasn't ready for PREY. I am not even a big gamer, but I played and beat PREY when it came out and felt like it was an insanely gripping, emotional and immersive experience. I usually lost interest in shooters because I can't feel connected or immersed, and typical gameplay could be monotonous but PREY was constantly surprising and exciting and I cared about the story, characters and world. It still looks great! And the loss of PREY 2 is criminal. I dunno what PREY 2017 is, but I wouldn't have called it PREY at all...
Prey 1 omg. I was disappointed they cancelled the sequel but the sequel does concern me about why it looks like Mass Effect than the horror alien game I played back in ‘07 lol
As someone who played the original back when it came out, over and over again. Me and my brother were quite looking forward to Prey 2 like most of you. The new Prey, imo, is far better.
There's 4 questions I have about the whole Prey story: 1 - How did Bethesda end up with the intellectual property 'Prey' if it was owned by 3D Realms? 2 - Why did they name the game that Arkane made 'Prey', instead of just giving it a new franchise? 3 - What is Roundhouse studios doing now? Human Head was 'remade' as a new studio at Bethesda named 'Roundhouse Studios', but there hasn't been a single word of what they're working on. Are they working on anything or have they been shut down, particularly since the Microsoft acquisition? 4 - If Bethesda as they claim didn't intentionally financially bleed out Human Head so that they could acquire the studio, why is that once Human Head was financially bled out by the contract deal with Bethesda for Prey 2, Bethesda did in fact acquire the studio? (ie. it sounds like a complete lie and that's exactly what they intended to do - the reason being seems obvious - there is a finite number of top quality game studios in the world. Bethesda was able to get them for no financial cost other than what they had paid up to that point for the Prey 2 development, which would have been significantly less money than the cost of a studio acquisition)
See noclip documentary on Arkane studios. Bethesda wanted to use the name Prey in some game and offered it to Arkane. Arkane liked it and decided to use it as it conveyed the game motives pretty well
@@PratikAnand I've seen it, but I guess I just fundamentally disagree with their use of it for the purpose of 'we own this IP so lets just use it for something'. Prey 2017 should have just been given a new franchise name because what if you wanted to make another game in the vein of System Shock - what do you call that now? Is that Prey 2? If you eventually did want to make a game more in the vein of the original Prey (mechanics-wise) then what is that called? You can't even buy the original Prey on Steam anymore - Bethesda essentially erased its' existence. Just a complete marketing stuff up all around in my opinion.
@@PratikAnand no they were forced to name it prey as confirmed form the leaked emails and the director of the game outright stating that was the real reason it was called it because bethesda was gonna lose the rights to the franchise
