The Strange Jet that Carried Bombs Heavier Than Its Tiny Engines

In the wake of World War 2, Italy faced the immense challenge of rebuilding its shattered economy.
Amidst this struggle and with limited funds, the Aermacchi aviation company developed the MB-326 jet trainer, a one-stop-shop for training all the Italian pilots of the late 20th century. Sleek and versatile, this low-wing, all-metal jet came with very simplified controls and avionics and featured a tandem cockpit under a bubble canopy, providing pilots with unparalleled visibility.
But the MB-326 was not just a trainer. If adjusted, it could very well compete with other jet-engined models of the era.
With the capability of carrying a few 250 or 550-pound bombs, 68-millimeter rocket launchers, and, most importantly, powerful twin 30-millimeter autocannons with 300 rounds, its firepower was nothing short of impressive for the over ten nations who acquired it.
During a dramatic showdown with Soviet-backed forces, the MB-326 proved its might by taking down not one but two Sukhoi Su-24 tactical bombers, completing its transformation from a humble trainer into a powerful striker.

Ex RAAF AvTech here, these jets were excellent. I had the pleasure of running flightline operations with the Macchi. I went for a few rides in the back seat and even was given the stick a few times. They weren't without their foibles as they got older but still managed to turn inside the F18s, which annoyed their pilots to no end.

I flew Macchis on pilot course back in 1990. They were beautiful aircraft to fly. Virtually no vices, only an inverted spin was unrecoverable. They were the fastest Italian sportscar in Australia. One of our instructors bounced an F18 at Pearce and 'shot him down'. The F18 pilot bought the beers.

Most of that footage was Australian. I worked on them at 2FTS in Western Australia. They were a very good aircraft, and yes they were solid. The PC9 that replaced them as a trainer were a lot more flimsy. The Hawke was use for combat training. I flew in one for a test flight, the best flight I ever took. The visibility from the back seat was great, except when landing, the rear seat was much the same height as the front seat. English engine in an Italian aircraft was interesting, imperial measurement on the engine, metric on the airframe. The BFCU (Barometric Flow Control Unit) had a tendancy to leak fuel, the aircraft would be lost, due to fire. Of course there was the aircraft that a student tried to push the main undercarriage through through the wing, hard landing, that never flew again.

I was at 79sqn late 90s. I remember a guy cracked a nose on one when he hit the brakes too hard on a houchin once. I went for a ride in one as well, and you're right quite nice to fly in. They did tend to use a fair amount of oil those engines.

On the morning of May 21, 1982, an Aermacchi (4-A-115) under the command of Lieutenant Guillermo Owen Crippa was sent to check if part of the British fleet was landing in the Strait of San Carlos (Islas Malvinas Argentinas). He flew towards the strait knowing that, if there was a landing, there would be a significant number of ships. He found himself facing fourteen English ships and attacked the first, the Frigate HMS Argonaut, launching a 75 mm Zuni rocket. He opened fire on the ship's infrastructure with 30 mm cannons and rockets. He tried to affect their radars, launching the Zuni and flying low over their antennas.

We had 8 ships of every aircraft type flying diamond formation, onto the Union Buildings. Where we couldn't make up an 8 ship, the Buccaneers flew with the Canberras, the VIP Squadron flew together & others made up the Museum Flight. That was over 100 aircraft in the air at one time. We currently have less than 40 serviceable aircraft in the entire SAAF.

lots of RAAF and RAN video, great, I trained on these and they were lovely to fly. Lacked some thrust in hot climate, and fuel, so all the single-engine turbojet limitations and thought processes needed. All mechanical controls, and RAN jets had the 'small tippers' tip tanks, while the RAAF trainers had larger tip tanks. I think only the L-39 compares in simple elegance of design.
