Edgar Wallace's "The Stranger of the Night," is a well-crafted supernatural thriller first published on 15 October 1910. Follow the tale of George Thomas, a troubled man armed with a hidden knife, as he encounters a mysterious stranger who seems to understand his deepest fears and desires. This stranger, a seemingly benevolent spirit, guides George through a night of profound psychological and moral turmoil, leading to an unexpected and thought-provoking conclusion. Let Tony Walker's evocative storytelling immerse you in Wallace's world, where the boundaries between reality and the supernatural blur in this riveting tale.

"...I dunno, that tough-guy act wasn't particularly convincing..." KIDDING! 😉 I once heard it said that it takes seven complements to recover from the damage of a single criticism. I think, for me personally, the ratio 14-to-1 or even worse. For what it's worth, I really admire what you do and I'd be doing the very nearly same thing myself (although probably not doing it as well) if paying the bills didn't soak up so much of my time, energy, and creativity. Currently, my favorite genre is "occult detective," so I feel doubly lucky that you've got a ghost (and horror) podcast duelling with a detective podcast over which one gets to popularize great stories like these. Please keep doing what you're doing, Tony! You're a kind, friendly voice to all of us and an inspiration to many of us! Also, keep pursuing Shelia's crystal gongs! I know how she feels (in fact, stage fright is why I (so far) haven't recorded any vocal music) but seriously, if it sounds good and you've got decent mics, then record it! If it was calming, healing music the instant it was made, then there is a good chance it will "reverberate" through youtube (via replays, recommendations, etc.) and benefit an even greater audience. Sadly the naysayers never really had a chance to personally benefit from the creation. Their only joy of choice is schadenfreude. They are just the stony ground through which creative folks must trudge. They cannot move themselves, so their only hope is to cause a brief flash of misery to a passerby. That makes your defence the best choice -- just avoid them whenever you can, and, if they ever manage to get into your shoes, take a moment to shake them out of there, leave them in the dust, and resume your journey.

I really enjoyed this. I like the angel-like figure who saves the man. Getting the man to realize he is responsible for his own actions, and then the opportunity comes along for the man to change his life. The words wax cylinders had a visceral effect on me. Reminded me of the movie "Crimson Peak." Scary!!
@craigoliver8712

I've seen Crimson Peake a couple of times but can't recall the scene with the "wax cylinders".It is the Tom Hiddleston+ Mia Wasa???(something Polish)? oh+Jessica Chastain plays Hiddleston's sister(way too close)

@@craigoliver8712 lol! Yes! Mia Wasikowska.😁 You know Jessica Chastain was asked to play the part of Edith, but she wanted to be the villainess. Edith, (Mia) finds the wax cylinders and player hidden in a closet. When she listens it's a voice from one of the women who was a previous victims of the Sharp siblings. The woman is warning whoever may find the recording that she is dying from the poisoned tea. Edith was just taking a sip of her tea when hearing the message!

This reminds me of something I’ve been reading about lately: the “third man” syndrome, where someone feels an accompanying presence in emergencies or times of extreme distress. I like that Wallace left doubt at first about whether the man of the night was goading him into committing the crime or talking him out of it!

Found Tony just a few months ago (early 2024) at the detective stories and appear to be working backwards ... really enjoy his narration (more i think than the guest narrators). Only thing unwanted is those humble preambles to his interesting and amusing commentaries at the end. Always well done! I give small donations when I can. Hope you will too. ... and anyone who loves dogs is ok with me (well, most of 'em anyway).

I was about to listen to this story, and listened to 5 minutes of ad's then thought, No. I'd like some music first, so I listened to the Fisherman's Friends. 😮 Loved this story, it was a happy end and I like the idea of Angels walking with us. "Gabriel before me." "Raphael behind me." "Michael to my right." "Uriel on my left side." "In the circle of fire." Stay tough Tony. 🧡🧡🧡

I love the fact that you wrap up every story with an update on your life (I'm about to graduate from nursing school, so I especially loved hearing about your time spent as a nurse) and I've learned quite a lot from your literary analyses as you discuss each story in-depth (lives of the authors, comments on style, your thoughts on what makes a short ghost story successful...) Got me with that one, I was sure it would turn out HE was the ghost and had earlier drowned himself in the river. I think a few signs hinting that were deliberately planted? Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Markheim' is very similar, but more dialogue-heavy and more ambiguous about the nature of the stranger. Is the shanty you're thinking of 'The Gallant Frigate Amphitrite'? The name Valparaiso made me think of the line 'Farewell to Valparaiso, farewell for a while.'

I think that the problem is that the nay-sayers say things that we already tell ourselves, so it's more likely that we will believe them that all the people who make positive comments. I suppose that means that we must practice saying lots of good things about ourselves so that we eventually believe them.

I wonder if you could get the writers guild intervene for you even if you are not a member. Also there's an organization completely non-profit and idealistic called Writers Beware that opposes any kind of scam or unfairness against writers. They have taken action and Chief Fair outcomes in many cases. I think your problem might be in your belly but I couldn't say for sure. You should ask them.
