The Housekeeper by Marjorie Bowen

Marjorie Bowen was a well-known writer of macabre stories in her day. The Housekeeper, in my opinion is an excellent story. Bowen injects some deeper meaning and subtlety into her stories so they are about more than scaring you. This story portrays a toxic relationship between two people in Regency England.

Thanks for providing a background on the author. I’m an expat living a long time in the US, but being English I completely understand the class aspect. Both characters in this story were quite despicable. Reminds me a bit of several of Dickens characters.

Listened to this story twice, savoring each delectable morsel. One tidbit I noticed was the mention of “goblin head scones.” I had to wonder if they were similar to “cathead biscuits” or “bastard biscuits” my grandmother used to make. Anyway, it’s an absolutely tantalizing story and I really enjoyed your comments.

Thank you for sharing this story. It is indeed special. I do understand what you said about class, even as a Canadian, because I’ve read so much British literature; for instance, I’ve read all of Agatha Christie and class is very evident in her writing as well. I remember one character specifying she would do only the light housekeeping, “never the rough,” or something to that effect. Also, in A Murder is Announced, there is a moment where the Colonel asks Philippa Haymes how the farm work is going, but in such a tone that he understood she was not “really” a farm worker. Many other British authors convey that sense of class, and how impoverished gentility is still gentility. I loved the unflinching descriptions of the utter ruin of the house, the people, their clothes, even the food, yet the characters could not stoop to actually work to earn money because of their position. Very well done and a memorable story indeed!

Thank you, excellent reading as always of a good story. Great choice. Marjorie Bowen wrote some very good short stories, novels and even very early examples of 'flash fiction' I have read. She wrote two excellent examples of 'flash fiction' ghost stories called 'A Persistent Woman' and 'The Accident' , both under 150 words but very effective. They are worth checking out. Her Gothic horror novel 'Black Magic' set in the Middle Ages is good with surprising plot twists, great atmosphere, interesting characters and even 'gender bending'. Her short ghost/horror stories are good, such as 'The Crown Plate Derby', 'The Intruder' and' The Prescription'. I intend reading more of her works as I like her style and descriptive powers.

Thanks as always Tony, it always a treat to hear your narration. I find all to often many modern narrators don't understand context or syntax, let alone pronunciation. Thanks especially for alerting me to M. Bowen's writing. She must have lead an interesting life to paint such solid characters. These are real people (even if despicable), whom anyone with an ounce of malice or a pinch of bitter disappointment can relate too. It reminds me of Emily Bronte's tense and torchoned world. Tony - slight disagreement with you in this story. By the way i think it’s wonderfully written and created, really get a sense of these two dreadful humans. However I think there’s s very clear hint he killed his wife, because he says when he first is getting suspicious to his new wife “i did it for you” and its hinted even earlier on that he thought wooing this wife would bring him the money he needs. So we have: terrible old card sharp and con-man He is desperate We know he HAD a first wife We also know he looked on her as standing in his way, as a shrew and that she was honest We also hear him say that “i did it for you” to the new wife and we can assume what he did was indeed murder Then of course we dont know the method of murder used, but it become reasonably obvious I think as he is scared by her return that he did away with her. Hope this makes sense - we may not have known he used poison but murder is i think implied obviously.
