NOTHING beats the 1978 record release version, but this is still well cool and in the groove, especially as it's live. RIP Dave...wow, what a keyboard player this guy was.
One of the greatest, sounded so unique when compared to other keyboard players at the time. You must be happy with how wolves have been this season I imagine?
agreed mate sad indeed, the heart and soul of the band, with us rats for 40 odd yrs, he was unreal, weve been lucky to have seen and heard him so many times, so we must be semi positive,, the man and the band are class, S1V
A very sad day, to hear of Dave's passing. I was devastated when I heard. I loved this band. They came to a small venue outside of Toronto back in the early 80's and my mate and I went to see them. We were lucky enough to meet Dave outside of the venue. What a great guy. He chatted to us like we were his friend. My condolences to his family and his friends. RIP you great keyboardist and great human being.
I don't know if I heard he died and I 4got. I'm not kidding, I am a drug addict who also enjoys a wee drink noo and again, I surface every few years but am so sickened by the plc that I dive back under and remember.i fkng loved the band.and loved them on top of the pops.
RIP Dave Greenfield. So much talent and thanks to all the band to keep ongoing for so long. This rendition of Walk on By is absolutely spot on. You can take your autotuned trash and 'stuff it up the hole in your culture'.
What a band,Live and they never let each other down once on such a high performance tune,And what a frontman they've got.Just gotta love The Stranglers.
IN 1977 WHEN I BOUGHT RATTUS,I THOUGHT DAVE GREENFIELD WAS BRILL, NOW 35 YEARS LATER I CAN HONESTLY SAY HE IS THE BEST FANTASTIC DAYS WILL NEVER BE BETTERED
This is an absolute classic.Bert and Hal did some memorable stuff but as a cover this can never be beaten.Cant wait for the 2019 gigs close to home.Hope they dont stop touring ,along with The Lightning seeds also!
Flew over from Florida for this gig and had a drink with Dave upstairs after the show. Such a huge loss. There will never be another like him. RIP Dave.
I must say this is a very good live version of "Walk on by" sung by Baz Warne. Do Rest In Peace Dave and Jet. I do hope somewhere out of the reaches of our universe that you two band mates are having music sessions together with a few others that we here on earth sadly miss.
Such an awesome song in the hands of the stranglers love you all especially Dave Greenfield truly a gifted original musician really sad to hear the news of his passing will always listen to the the stranglers Dave is the Keith emerson and jon lord of punk and new wave he always will be missed
I remember buying this single at the time, as it was 6 minutes long the 7 inch single ran at 33. The stranglers were very talented guys , RIP Dave Greenfield.
I first heard this song late at night in August 1978 coming in on medium wave from Radio Luxembourg to West Cork, Ireland. I still remember it fading in and out and just how amazing it was, the beautiful keyboard and guitar solos, JJ's growling bass, and Hugh's pained expressive voice. What a cover version, that goes far beyond the original, which itself was a beautiful song.
The Stranglers have had a fantastic line up over the years...and with much respect and love to Messrs Black Burnell Cornwell and Warne...the passing of Mr Greenfield was very sad and he is absolutely irreplaceable. What a pair of shoes to fill. I hope someone fancies a crack at it - given the current Pandemic, I can only imagine how emotional it will be for all of us to see the band again live, especially with the loss of Dave. One day we'll be able to do it (hopefully Newcastle 2022 for me! ) but I'm fully expecting to spend the whole time in tears... (of sadness, respect, love & the joy of being able to see the band again). Best wishes all. Ps as an asides i went to Hamburg Fabrik Dec 2019 with 2 of my best mates to see the band...obviously didn't know what was coming next...im so glad we did...i haven't see the lads since...so hoping for everyone's sake we can get back to (the new) normal soon
Great stuff, Baz has done the stranglers real justice and kept the band as they always should have been , he's taken over where Hugh left off and gave the band new credetials to be back at the top of their game !
I've never been punk or ever really understood why punks bothered. After all, they were about not making an effort for any reason. But the Stranglers have been ever present in my mix tapes and car cassette playlists since the 80s when i bought Rattus Norvegicus. 'Nuff said.
Isnt it amazing how a man who sings off tone can sound so good?! I`ll send you an amazing group thats unknown as yet, and probably always will be. Sheenagh XX
The doors my fave band. My last song I listened to was light my fire and it brought me to walk on by as I think too its the light my fire for the stranglers. These are top 4 in my bands.
Sorry Martin, but there is only one cover of this Dionne Warwick classic that "nails it!" And that is the Original Stranglers version of 1978 including Original Strangler Hugh Cornwell.
Guys-the band continued. For every one fan that hates this fact, there must be a hundred that are happy because I’ve seen every line up, they were all outstanding and every gig was sold out. That’s having 30 odd hits and a string of classic lps in your gunnery as a band, and not just because of one original member that left nearly 30 years ago. Hugh is gone, get over it.
