my friends wanted me to make this video for like almost 2 years lol enjoy losers one thing I would like to add is that I forgot to mention that Goku's battle with Frieza also served as a way to show Goku that sometimes defeating an adversary wasn't enough to cause them to change their ways or redeem them, which is why he was trying to push Gohan into finishing off Cell right away etc. I could go into more detail but that is something I wish I added.
@Star Killer IMO Almost every Naruto character represents a philosophy of their own. It can even be said that the entire series is filled with a lot of ideological and philosophical battle. To explain this I’ll choose some character with interesting philosophical ideology, let’s break this down. First, Naruto himself is an Idealist. Naruto is a do good kind of guy, and to some can be seen as naive. He doesn’t believe in “necessary evil” or “lesser of two evil”. He’s pretty similar to Captain America in this sense. When given two inevitable choice that each contains some form of evil, he will always try to avoid both instead of calculating the least evil choice. He value morals above all else, even when it seems unrealistic. One example that best explain this is when Itachi asked Naruto what would he do if he has to kill Sasuke to save the village. In this instance Naruto outright denies the question instead of answering it.
It sounds deep but it doesn't really make much sense... It's his wish but he doesn't want it? I get what he was going for, but yeah idk. The sentence is also grammatically incorrect which bothers me more than it should as the final line of the vid 😬😬 edit: WHY ARE YOU ALL REPLYING THE SAME THING THAT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT I SAID?????? **I AGREE** goku doesn't want absolute power. I AGREE he wants the challenge. I AGREE his friends are his power. I UNDERSTOOD THE VIDEO YO im just saying the sentence was bungled like he should have worded it differently cuz the way he put it is nonsensical
For real, it reminded me of a personal idea I learned of how people can strive for self-perfection and improvment and making that their personal journey because they don't have to ever fear being able to achieve it
You are one of the few people on this Earth who actually understands the themes underlying the story of Dragon Ball... I thank you for continuing to expand and make videos on subjects like this. Understanding Goku is understanding the idea of the story.
Right. This is far better than all those Goku is a bad dad, Goku is an idiot, Vegeta is a deeper character than Goku headcanon people use to carry these days in the fandom because they watched one too many abridged episodes.
This is probably the best and most accurate analysis on Goku, hell on anything DB on YT. It’s nice to see someone who actually understands the themes of the story and Goku as character. Great vid
Like I don’t want to wank Seth all of the tine but this analysis is a entirely new perspective & seems pretty concrete. I mean some of it seems a bit forced, but regardless, it’s quite the video.
craigime some of it is warranted, most of what i’ve seen is criticism about db just being about some idiot getting stronger and stronger with no strong story
"But you never fought to kill or even to win. Only to test your limits and become the strongest you could possibly be. You showed mercy to everyone even your fiercest enemies - _even me_ - as if you knew one day I would possess this tiny sliver of a soul. How can a Saiyan fight with such power and the same time be so _gentle_ ? It makes me angry just thinking about it, but perhaps it's my anger that's made me blind to the truth for so long: I see it now. I fought to push down others, *you only fight to push yourself* Hang in there, Kakarot. You are number one"
It can really work with either interpretation. On one hand, Goku's personality never really changed, just his knowledge. On the other hand, that in and of itself can be argued as character development.
The video doesn’t contradict Goku as a flat character, it’s just an in-depth analysis of Goku’s dream is to constantly get stronger but yet not being the absolute strongest since he also wants rivals and obstacles but Goku affecting the people around him is addictive to his wish as Goku got stronger because of the friends/family he’s gain in his journey and even changed characters such as Jiren whom is basically Goku’s desire to being the absolute strongest changed into someone who understands that absolute strength and growing as an individual is nothing comparable to growing stronger with the friends he’s gained up to this point and Goku’s character technically hasn’t developed since he’s exactly the same as he’s always been but it’s just his goal is very complicated and unattainable.
I wish more people used critical thinking when watching anime because they'd find that these shows are works of art and much more deep than what you see at face value.
Yeahs people’s problems these days are that want every issue shoved and explained in there face 24/7 which makes the show too serious, something db nailed was never taking itself too seriously yet still having development and progression of its themes always there if you paid attention which most people literally can’t do anymore.
As someone who used to and still somewhat like anime, one thing about anime fans is that they're too hungry for fanservice, yuri, anime women and muh flashy fight scenes. None of them know what good and subtle character writing is, and the only people who watch anime that know these things, watch other shows that aren't anime. It's sad because they're so used to the format of story telling that tell don't show, instead of show don't tell that they don't know what subtlety is.
Huh... that explains why Goku acted the way he did in the Moro arc. He fought Moro on Earth the first time because there was no choice, Moro was going to absorb everything in his greed. Goku was forced to fight alone and without help, because even if everyone else combined they would not be able to even touch Moro; that’s why Goku got frustrated, not that he was losing, but that he was the last line of defense. Even Vegeta alone wasn’t enough even with his techniques. When Merus stepped in and sacrificed his angel form to aid Goku, that was the help Goku needed, and he perfected Ultra Instinct. Goku thought that shattering Moro’s pride and ability would be enough to stop him from doing bad, but that backfired because Moro was truly evil. Moro doesn’t care about strength or training or anything like that, so when Goku questions Moro about whether or not Moro ever trained the answer disappointed him. It was also fitting that Goku never perfected Ultra Instinct without the help of Merus, and would have ultimately lost against Moro without everyone and Uub giving their energy to Goku. Goku’s character arc and DBZ in general is all about finding your place in society, and using your strength to defend those who cannot defend themselves; in return, in those moments where you have no strength, those same people can step in and save you from the brink of total annihilation. Moro stole energy and spat in the face of anyone who ever helped or supported him, and he became a monster as a result. Goku never steals energy, and only uses what is freely given to him by everyone else; in turn, Goku trains and becomes strong to be worthy of that generosity and assistance. The end result is that Goku is given the power to surpass everyone. I guess Super Goku was never dumb. What he was was free of worries of the future. Together, Earth as a whole would come together and defeat whatever problems came their way, even non-fighters like Bulma lending their expertise where fists alone would fail. A lack of worry and anxiety leads to a lack of desire and focus, which gives off the impression that they just don’t think things through. The reality, however, is very different; Goku was always confident that everyone working together would always succeed over whatever threat came their way. He went from an orphan living alone in the woods to a central figure in a community of like-minded individuals, all working together for the benefit of everyone. From a hermit to a functioning member of society. That’s actually very beautiful ☺️
@@mohaumoseki3582 Well, specifically Goku said he had never kissed Chichi on the lips. I’m not counting kisses on the cheek. Hell, that isn’t even a romance thing, family do that and women do that to other women

I love how people watch dragon ball z for the fights. But forget this is Goku’s story of self improvement and development. No one ever looks a goku’s inner journey. And this man did it first lol cheers to you brother this was a great video
yes, partly. the darker truth is that his friends give him more pronounced zenkai boosts; not that he wants to hang out with them or care about them; caring about and protecting them is a guaranteed way to empower goku in geting stronger.
What I’ve learned from seeing some criticisms of dragon ball is that some people really just don’t know how to read. I’m not acting like Toriyama is the shakesphere of manga or anything like that I’m just saying he’s a lot better than some people give him credit for
His impact to modern manga culture is the biggest in the last 50 years, but yeah many people dont understand simplicity and subtly can be key to greatness.
@@aesir1ases64 I wouldn't say THE biggest, authors like Hirihiko Araki and Kentaro Miura have similar influence, but Toriyama is still a GOAT among them regardless
@@dislikereporter2271 he's bigger than both, Dragonball is universally known even to people who don't know anime. It also gets referenced in pop culture more
@Cedric-Joe Cadet Not even just that, but anime and manga has become very pretentious, convoluted and preachy over the last couple of decades. Modern audiences are looking for things in Dragonball that just don't suit it.
@@harelldrayton2816 Naruto is the biggest offender in my opinion. Because of characters like Itachi or just jutsu's in general, people are all of a sudden expecting these convoluted techniques to be a thing in Dragonball. Today seth did something I never thought possible. He made me love dragonball even more. The series I grew up with. The reason why I jumped into anime head first in the late 90s/ early 2000s. This video is beautiful. Amazing. And brings a tear to my eye. This highlight goku as a character sooo well it shouldn't even be legal. Truly greatness right here peeps

"Jirens life is just Goku's but without the dragon balls" Like. When I heard seth...literally say word for word my argument I knew I was intelligent. Felt happy asf
Bro me too. I realized this when I rewatched super last year. If jiren had db’s, he prolly wouldn’t be the way he is. Another thing I realized is when goku needed his friends the most, they were there for him. When jiren needed his the most, they all abandoned him. Since goku leaned he can rely on them when he’s weak, he used them as a source of motivation and strength. Jiren learned that friendship and trust only leads to more pain, and his own strength was all he could really depend on to avoid pain. Both are strong and love to grow stronger but for different reasons. 2 sides of the same coin. It all ties back to the db’s. They helped bring goku and his friends together. If jiren had them, his friends would’ve never abandoned him since the balls are a symbol of hope. I be telling people db is a lot deeper than you think.
@@leultrainstinct406 Yes bro. I told my friend anyone who thinks dragon ball isnt deep needs anime to tell them blatantly what's going on because their analytical skills are shit. Believe it or not this is how I stumbled upon the idea of Jiren being an actually good or decent charater: I was playing a dbz game on Roblox, yes...and then the forms for the Jiren race were emotion, half emotion, fear and hate. And I was like this kinda makes sense when you think about it because it shows the development of Jiren. Then I thought about how if Jiren had the dragon balls to save or bring his friends back to life how would he be. And this brought up the idea of Goku on namek vs frieza and how I believe goku would shell himself away from friends if he kept losing them and could never get them back. I had some debates and it was in depth but I cannot remember everything I said but I just remember that I said Jiren is comparable to Goku of Goku had no dragon balls. To think a video game could spark the analytics in my mind
@@songoku4lac168 I thought so too but I liked him and I decided, hey. Lemme dig deep into his backstory. I put myself in his shoes and grew to understand that while the show explained or portrayed his backstory as garbage. Their intention was far different. People like to say sasuke. But while it's a little bit similar, sasukes friends and family just died. Jirens own died and quit on him. He didn't have a team to help him get stronger or evil outside forces like orochimaru etc. Jiren was alone and theres a different feeling between death and abandonment. Everyone can lose friends and family but it's about how its done that makes it different.
I can’t stress this enough the top was amazing . People were distracted behind all the great fights to pay attention to the character development and deeper meanings of it all
Thank you Goku is not a bad character. Some people don't necessarily change like Sasuke or Kaneki, Goku effects the people around and this video proves he does think a lot more about his actions then most give him credit for. He also actually thinks about the future. Goku is a good character for his type of show, people should stop looking at him in such a shallow way. Great analysis.
...the entire point of the video is that he does change. Goku is a pretty unique character where Goku has both a positive and flat character arc. Believing in a truth, but also a lie
It’s crazy how this video made me see dragon ball in an entire different light, I love dragon ball cos of nostalgia but thought the story was always mediocre but now see how amazing it is

Thank you. Finally someone actually understands. Everyone always complains about Dragon Balls basic story, but they are always too busy wanking off other anime because “They have depth.” Having an over complicated or long story doesn’t make it good. i've always believed that goku accepted his saiyan heritage after he transformed on namek. on the way there, after meeting the other saiyans, he literally had an identity crisis and didn't want to believe that he was one of them, but after the frieza saga, it almost seemed like he took pride in who and what he is

Me: no he actually doesn't, in the second episode he inspires others to take action for good and even risks his life to save his bully proving to all might that he was wrong, the show just kept it realistic since there are villains that cannot be beaten without a quirk(but quirk or not deku can inspire others to do great things and that is a great quality not everybody has, besides he has solved the problems of others like todoroki by inspiring them, becoming their hero without powers, just words). For all the flaws db has, toriyama really squeezed all of this in on a story that was planned on a monthly basis.i wonder how an entire arc would've turned out if toriyama actually planned ahead.
Nice to see im not crazy here for seeing this. Goku is a character that develops without having to be defined by a concrete character arch. He goes through several subtle ones, and the series tackles ideas as opposed to just arcs over the course of tis run. Another thing i wanna touch on is the whole "Goku believing he was the cause of all the bad on the planet". Its interesting because the entire point of the Buu arc is how he was wrong! Ultimately, the Earth was in peril due to the embodiment of Evil itself simply existing, which presents an omnipresent peril for his friends regardless of his absence. and I 1000% Agree on peoples' analysis of Jiren being shallow. its BEYOND shallow.
I don’t think that people’s analysis of Jiren is shallow so much as it is just taken from the incorrect perspective. Seth here describes why Jiren is the perfect villain for Goku because of how their juxtaposition demonstrates the latter’s growth as a character. But most people look at Jiren as an individual character, and he has a lot of failings there. He cheats in the tournament by flying in several scenes(being associated with inconsistent storytelling is never good), he doesn’t actually do much of anything and fails somewhat as a proper antagonist from a narrative standpoint as a result, doesn’t have enough development outside of his cliche backstory (Seth’s right in that it’s fitting, but it’s still barebones) to make people care about him enough for his presence to contribute meaningfully to one’s investment in whatever conflict he participates in, and there’s a whole host of other flaws. To cut a long story short, while Seth is correct in saying that Jiren is *thematically appropriate,* it takes much more than that to make a good villain or character. It just so happens that this video ONLY serves to analyze theming and so Jiren’s only real strongpoint as a character outshines his plethora of shortcomings within this context.
@@Sakaki98 Jiren isn't "cheating by flying". that doesn't make any sense. The power of flight is turned off in the World of Void. Goku's saiyan heritage is not why he got as strong as it is. Its descriptive, not perscriptive. Goku was a weak as fuck low level saiyan when he was born. Unnaturally weak for his species in fact. His origins arent what made him strong or special. His character is. You missed the entire point of Goku, let alone Jiren if this is what u are focusing on. Jiren is just a strong dude. But thats the point. There wasnt meant to be anything special about him. His juxtaposition as just being a guy just like Goku, a guy who overcame all the odds set against him through sheer will and determination, all culminating in the climax of his fight against Goku was the point. At that point it became not a battle between just 2 super species of aliens. It was a battle of philosophies between 2 people. 2 wills. Jiren is essentially WHAT Goku would be like if he didnt have the luxury of nakama power to rely on. Goku is a man that has gotten to where he is by making friends of his opposition. Jiren is a man who got there by relying only on himself. Jiren seeks absolute power so that he can stop all bad from ever happening. Goku seeks to never have that. He seeks to find challenges and improve til the end of time. Both of them seek that which lies beyond strength itself, but have differeing philosophies on what that even means. People are too focused on some kind of power level dick measuring contest over the actual narrative to the detriment of their analysis, regurgitating twitter hottakes as if they are anything of substance.
It really is crazy to me how Dragon Ball is both overrated and underrated at the same time. It has such great storytelling and really good in depth characters but 95% of its audience dont even get the main theme of the series or even understand their favorite characters like that. And it especially gets better the more you understand Journey to the West and eastern philosophy in general
I like how the Nature v Nurture thing is popping up in the Super Manga, with Goku learning about his father and maybe learning more about his true nature.
Stupid fans get mad at Goku because Gohan isn't fighting, and get mad at him when he doesn't think of his parents.... when literally half of the series doesn't ever refer to their parents lol
That is the main appeal of DBZ though. I don't know any people who started with it and got to attached to Goku as a character, much less his arc/development.
I think Goku embracing who he is in the Tournament of power after it all has led to this, really fits Goku's Ultra Instinct since it ties into Bruce Lee's Philosophy on honestly expressing oneself. I just wish they touched more on it and after Resurrection F, into the Goku Black arc and make a few arcs before the Tournament of Power.
Yessir, and it also fits with the Sun Wukong philosophy of Goku, the same way GT had the Sun Wukong LOOK of Goku with SS4. Tho, I think DBS does the Wukong thing overall much better, especially since we have Broly, which is a character that imo fits the SS4 theme more than Goku ever could (and this comes from a GT fan), especially since he’s already a step of the way there with his Ikari power.
Mine too I’ve always felt people didn’t understand goku’s character that much, which I think stems from the fact most people only watched z and not the og db and missed out on what made him the person he is today.
IRS: "Goku, you haven't filed a tax return in your entire life, we have a very powerful organisation, you're in a lot of trouble!" Goku: "Oh wow a new powerful opponent. KamehaMEHAAAAA!!"
True. It’s nothing complex and even other anime’s that have basic characters stories and themes are better written than dragonball but dragon balls basic themes stories and characters are still pretty well written.
@@enkidude9372 yeah. If i would think of an example, Superman is a much more complex and conplicated character than Goku but just because Goku is a simpler character doesnt make Superman a much better character.

As for jiren I am so surprised not many saw how important his character was. When jiren has his final stand with the characters and goku is holding back the blast you can see a star being “just out of reach” which is jiren. It’s goku now having another goal to keep pushing himself to be the best, goku now knows what he wishes to reach even after knocking him out goku even states to vegeta that jiren really was something special in a serious tone. Jiren is meant to represent what goku aims for, as goku is for jiren when jiren realises that trust which he threw away is what held him back which is what helped goku best him. Goku aims to reach the level jiren is at however once he reaches this level he realises that despite over powering jiren and having this absolute strength he cannot beat jiren, he might’ve bested him but didn’t knock him off only when he realised that with trust in frieza and 17 he was able to defeat jiren which is what jiren finally understood at the end. Jiren was angry when goku became stronger than him because his power and beliefs came into question. The ToP arc was a beautiful arc and arguably one of the best arcs written in super
dude, seth, this video is fantastic. i love, and i hate (for your sake), how careful and precise you are with your words. such a clear and humble analysis that wastes no time in explicitness --i hate it - cause i know dammed well you worded things so precisely cause you know how toxic people are to take one sentence fragment out of your context. some heat
Honestly, the last part has rung true since dragonball. When looking at the story, Journey to the west, we learn that, without being cliche, is that the true prize was the friends made along the way. Goku started to realize that the goal would never be finding absolute strength, it's about the journey of bettering himself constantly
In other words Goku realizes thats it is not one’s individual strength that can always save the day but depending on friends, rivals and what you learn from others along with your power is what helps you overcome adversity. Its the same with is normal human beings we would’ve never got to where we are without help and our own resolve. I truly appreciate videos like this because it shows what many anime fans choose to ignore that Dragon Ball does have a good story despite it being simple.
I find it frustrating that the simplicity of Dragon Ball is what turns people off. They want deep themes being shoved in their faces, which isn’t “deep” at all. The themes are there, beyond all the transformations and screaming and hair colors there’s actual _themes._ Themes that have actually gotten me through some tough times, and have given me a better outlook and perspective on life. Really all you have to do is look, and people just…don’t? People just forget that Toriyama’s one of the greatest mangakas of all time, for every time he forgets something there’s another time where he can contribute and create really impactful stories. And he does this without even planning ahead, he doesn’t know where the story goes but somehow has a deep understanding of it to just know where it should go, under a weekly deadline no less.
10/10. masterpiece. another L for the haters that are themselves like what they like because they are blinded by nostalgia pointless hate on dragon ball. dragon ball is goated. good job Seth thank for showing that it is a masterpiece.
Bro this is one of the best videos I’ve ever watched PERIOD. And this is not my first time watching it but hearing it again really makes me feel like dragon ball is a lot deeper than what people think it is. And also makes me realize that not everything has to be explained for it to make sense it seems like what people hate about goku is that he’s a very plain character with no wishes character development or resolve and doesn’t do a lot of smart things when it comes to his fights, but when u look at how Seth explains it seems like the writers intend to make goku look really stupid on a regular scale when u look at things as for what it is but when u look at it on a deeper scale u realize that goku does more thinking than people give him credit for and is not as stupid as people think. When thinking of goku in a way that his wishes is kept to himself and look at things from a different perspective I think goku as a character is a way better character then people give him credit for and is one of the best anime characters and is one of my personal favorite characters. Seth did a great job on this one 💪🏾💯
I think it has to do with each lesson learned is thru the same means. The repetition of things really takes away from any lesson of development. Also the writing is focused on power and feats and not necessarily values or philosophies. Its very easy to miss. Its why people see Dbz/s as plot less pointless fighting
@@abdulbah2176 Idk if he's regressing per say. I think he's still growing and developing, but it's stuff that he seemingly should already have a good handle on
Goku and Jiren really are mirrors of eachother when you look at it. The retrospective on Goku’s character during that arc brought tears to my eyes. I love dragon ball man
I always felt that goku just wanted to enjoy life, and then he started fighting stronger opponents and found joy in battle. But he's still just enjoying what he's doing. Like, if he never met Bulma he might never leave mount paozu and would have just continued training and living off the land.
I could listen to you talking about Goku for ages! I love Goku and Seth is my man, when it comes to anime videos. Never missed a vid, ever since I started watching you 4 years ago!
This video does a very good job explaining goku in fact this video has really opened my mind about some of the things in dragon ball about him that I simply forgot or didn’t realize in the first place maybe I should rewatch the series again to fully grasp everything that has essentially happened with him 👍
Okay, this got me thinking; so as a writer, I came to the conclusion that you can tell a lot about a story based on how it ends, considering that and the end of the Buu saga, I think the story of Dragon ball is a story about redemption but more than that, purification through death and or a chance for redemption.
