Haha glad I found this. I’m a year away from finishing my masters and really trying to break into the field and something like this gives me an idea of things to look for really excited!

That is the greatest compliment I could ever receive! Thank you so much. Remember feeling scared and feeling excited are the same thing from a physiological perspective - so let's say that you are excited and not scared! Keep me posted on your progression and let me know how I can be of assistance to you!

Would you please make a video regarding healthcare “politics”? I never realized how political so many aspects of healthcare are and how if you’re not in tune with that or are too blunt, you can really stunt your growth. Thank you! Excellent videos.

Michelle, that is an extremely accurate point you make. I could not agree more. Politics are probably the single most difficult things we have to deal with. And yes, if not managed well, it can definitely harm your career. Yes, I will put a video on this together.

I stumbled on your page while looking for Healthcare Administration careers. What a blessing 🙏🏽. I find psychology to be fascinating. Thank you for speaking on the stress topic. I struggle to understand if I deal with stress or anxiety. It's hard for me to tell when I'm going through it.

Hi Alejandra, thank you for the comment! I'm so pleased that you like the videos! Regarding stress and anxiety, the two can be related but are distinct concepts. At a very high level, stress is a psychological and physiological response to something defined (you know what caused it). Anxiety is typically more global and chronic in nature and characterized by excessive and persistent worrying. And yes, they can be difficult to understand, particularly when they are occurring. For example, when you are stressed, your body secretes noradrenaline and dopamine, which in part, cause your prefrontal cortex (the logical reasoning center of your brain) to lag behind the amygdala (an emotional response center). Additionally, glutamate and GABA (neurotransmitters) are affected, causing a hyperaroused state. These activities (in addition to others) can make make clear thinking a challenge. There are many techniques you can employ to work through stress or anxiety, which are beyond the scope of this high-level, brief answer! But do some searching - and I always recommend talking to a psychologist who can help to sort through stress and anxiety. I hope this helps.

Wow this is just want I was looking for. I’m a long time laboratory Technologist but I just got my bachelors in health care admin and soon Master’s. I’ve had trouble wrapping my head around what opportunities were out there for my new degree

Where have you been? Youre the mentor I've been needing... I am laboratory personnel working on my MBA, because I wish to move up. I am frightened to get stuck in a laboratory director position and never move up to COO (hopefully CEO one day). The lab director position isn't vacant (in spite of the COO and CEO "telling without telling" that they dont care for the current one). I love your "learn all the functions of the hospital" approach. Would going from a grunt medical laboratory scientist to a "clinical director" position be too big of a culture shock? I'm just not sure what I do if the pathway my own CEO suggested isnt an option at the moment.

I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! I love being considered a mentor. I had many mentors in my career too. They have been instrumental in my career and life. The more breadth of experience you can get the better. It sounds like you have a good relationship with your current CEO and COO. Those relationships are the most important thing. Networking is everything. So, my suggestion for you is to work with them on a development plan to get you to the COO and CEO level. And no, going from a "grunt" to Director is not too big of a shock. Anytime you are given the chance for growth, jump into the role and challenge yourself. It sounds like the COO and CEO will provide guidance and support to you as well.

Hi Dr. Jeff! I'm currently working at a soul sucking consulting firm and I want to transition to a Hospital Admin position by pursuing a masters. I work around 60/hrs a week and I am simply exhausted. I wanted to know if this is a demanding field in terms of energy and time. I'm tired of playing the "corporate machine game" and I just want to do something meaningful and simple. On a day to day basis would you be able to tell me what the career looks like?

I’m going to put some videos out on this soon. But briefly, as a CEO, you will work more than 60 hours a week. I work from 7 to 7 everyday and come back on weekends and holidays to make rounds with employees and patients. You are responsible for all aspects of your employees, your community, and the lives of your patients. You have full responsibility for your hospital’s finances, quality, safety, growth, employees, board, and long-term viability. It is a tremendously demanding and challenging job. You are responsible 24/7/365. So this is not a simple or easy path - This is a very demanding career with a burnout rate of 85% and higher divorce, substance use, and suicide rates than most other professions. It is also tremendously rewarding and satisfying. But it comes with a a deep time commitment, high pressure, and absolute commitment to putting the job first.
