After the cannon shot, Grandpa was always kind of embarrassed because Grandma was then taller than him. When he got his driver license renewed, he had to put down 4'9" instead of 5'6".

@@dont4143 I once read "The smallest line that you can make out, please" as "P-R-I- N-T- E-D-I-N-C-I-N-C-I-N-N-A-T-I-O-H-U-S-A,oh that's one for the economy!" She passed me on the eye exam but the next time I renewed my CDL,I got the same nurse who remembered me.... She was very specific about which lines to read from on this test.

Dirty Dan's great great grandfather was a soldier. When it came to valor there were none bolder. He left on the battlefield a ghoulish decoration. As a result of his ballistic decollation. Yet he somehow lived to be much older.

Wow Ive seen the Revenant movie but hadnt realized that the dude travelled 200 miles with a wound that was showing his ribs and then worms eating at his flesh, my word the paiiiin! oh the paiiin!, it must of been a true gigantic nightmare. Awesome once again Santee and cheers for the video.

Spiritual fitness/fortitude. The willingness to stay in the fight. That’s talked about a lot over on Active Self Protection, and I can’t see how it would have been any different in the Old West. The thing that floors me is how you get a lung shot and a gut shot, and survive only to die 10 years later from bad water in your mine! Thank you for the video, Santee. I can now say I know what a person looks like who has been scalped (and lived).

Actually doctors have used maggots to remove dead skin long before then and there has been experiments recently using maggots rather then doing surgery because maggots only eat the dead skin. I do know of cases of leeches being used to help remove excess blood from wounds which help the patients recovery.

Great episode! Dirty Dan , that was hilarious! ( wouldn't let him solo in church anymore. Hahaha ) In Jo-Ann and I's travels we love to visit museums. Seeing the medical tools ( like at the old Yuma State Prison ) from back then always sends a chill up my spine. I couldn't imagine having to be operated on back then. JT

Touring the Carnton plantation near Franklin TN which was used for a hospital by both sides during the War,,there is a display of the surgical tools used to treat the wounded after the battle. The tour guide said that,"Many doctors recognize some of the tools which are still in use for for surgery today."

This may not have anything to do with the west, but in Vermont of 1848, A man by the name of Phineas Gage had a railroad spike lodged in his head.... and survived. They were able to remove it, however it severely changed his personality. He died at the age of 36 from a seizure possibly caused by said injury.

I saw that back in my senior year of high school in one of my English classes ha ha ha... which reminds me that I saw An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge about a dozen times .. every substitute teacher showed it as class-filler back in the 70's. Hugh Glass would recover some and--none too happy about his pards abandoning him, tracked them down to Fort Atkinson (Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska ) to seek revenge. But the cowards, upon hearing of his miraculous survival and knew he wasn't too happy with them--joined the Army at Ft. Atkinson to protect themselves. When Glass arrived there, he found that his former comrades were beyond his reach, so back down the Missouri he went.

He's a video in itself. I read he was forced into piracy by Jean Lafiite and escaped. He was also abandoned again (after the bear scenario) and had to walk back hundreds of miles to civilization. This guy had bad luck...or good luck depending on how you look at it.

The part about dirty davs grandpa, they where a tougher lot back in those days. My grandma had a tractor roll over on her would have been round 1940. Her father told her to get out of bed and get to work because she was malingering! Tougher lot for sure.

Anthony Hopkins had too much fun playing Dr Kellogg. It's also a little disconcerting how ill-prepared both sides in the Civil War were in regards to medical care. But at least the physicians involved had the courtesy to share their experiences for the betterment of medical practice.

Beer was brewed locally. The grain was reused. The first run was strongest and only men were allowed to drink it. The third run was called small beer and that is what children drank. Also, life was extremely hard and the beer acted as a pain reliever at the end of a hard day.

One of my multiple X great grandfathers was shot clear through the face with an arrow by the Creek but survived to marry a Cherokee. My 3X great grandfather was lynched for stealing horses and didn't survive.

There was a Civil War soldier who survived after quite literally getting shot between the eyes. There's a photograph of him. In 1863 Jacob Miller was shot between the eyes at Chickamauga and left for dead. After regaining consciousness he had to return his left eye to it's proper place and the he set out alone on the 15 mile trip back to Chattanooga. He died in 1917 at the age of 88.

While I'm no expert I'm pretty sure that there was bare knuckle fighting back then and I'm sure it had been around a while before then, again no expert.
