Today I want to share with my friends the process of making organic fertilizer from the heads and shells of speckled shrimp at the end of May.
Spotted shrimp, also known as peony shrimp, is produced in the pure and cold waters of BC. It is the best sea shrimp. This kind of shrimp is naturally bright red, beautiful and rare. Delicious and unique spotted shrimp, the season we can eat is very short, only from May to early June each year.
The fresh spotted prawns are directly put into the steamer. After enjoying the speckled shrimp, there are a lot of shrimp shells left behind. Of course, I can't bear to throw it away. Use it as organic fertilizer by the way. Shrimp shell is a very good fertilizer. The content of phosphorus and calcium in shrimp shell is very high. These elements are essential nutrients for plants. The effect of organic fertilizer for growing vegetables and flowers is surprising.
There are many ways to make shrimp shell organic fertilizer. I like to make organic fertilizer water.
These spotted shrimp live in seawater that contains a lot of salt. Therefore, although I did not add anything when steaming the shrimp, there was still salt in the shrimp head and shell. I rinsed these shrimp shells in water for a long time, after washing them, drained the water, put them on the baking tray, and dried them in the oven. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for half an hour.
It is completely dried and the color is a little lighter. Take it out and let cool. These dried shrimp shells are crisper to the touch and lighter. But it was still very hard and tied. I put on my gloves, first broke the shrimp shells a little bit, and then used garlic pounding stones, which didn't work. Finally, I made the shrimp shells a little smaller by hand. This step is more troublesome, and it can finally be broken into a food processor. The powder that was beaten in a few minutes was crushed and poured out of the food processor. There was such a big pot. The shrimp shell, the main raw material of this organic fertilizer, is ready.
The second raw material is banana peel. The shrimp shells that have just been prepared contain a lot of phosphorus, and banana peels contain a lot of potassium. When the two are put together, there is sufficient phosphorus and potassium. Everyone knows that phosphorus and potassium are essential nutrients for plant growth.
Potassium: improve stress resistance; promote nitrogen absorption; avoid fruit drop.
Phosphorus can accelerate cell division, promote the growth of roots and above-ground parts, promote flower bud differentiation, early maturity, and improve fruit quality.
If you grow tomatoes, strawberries, eggplants, peppers and other plants, you must regularly supplement them with potassium. Potassium can enhance photosynthesis, improve plant resistance and disease resistance, and promote the absorption and utilization of nitrogen. It can make plants easier to breed fruits and avoid fruit drop.
In order to make shrimp shell fertilizer, I specially made a fruit cake and consumed some fruits such as bananas, so I got a lot of banana peels and other fruit peels. I was too lazy to chop up these banana peels and put them directly into the food processor. I found it couldn't move, so I added a bowl of water to make it better, then add water, and finally it was done. Pour into a large bowl, the color of the banana peel has become darker.
The third raw material used to make this shrimp shell fertilizer is coffee grounds. I usually drink coffee and I always collect coffee grounds to make fertilizer.
Coffee grounds are not only rich in nitrogen, but also contain many trace elements and other nutrients. Long-term use of coffee grounds can improve soil fertility and soil structure, increase the organic components in the soil, promote seed germination and seedling growth, and prevent various pathogen infections, such as fusarium wilt.
To prepare these three raw materials, we also need a very important thing, which is orange peel. I wonder if you have used all kinds of food waste to make organic fertilizer by yourself? Many organic substances may give off some flavors that you don't like during the fermentation process. Especially the shrimp shell fertilizer I am making, there will inevitably be some shrimp residues in it, and these meat proteins will give off a heavy flavor during the fermentation process. I don't want these peculiar smells to escape into the yard.
The orange peels to be processed next can easily solve the taste of organic fertilizer fermentation.
