Typhoon Bebinca has made landfall in eastern China, hitting the Shanghai area and neighboring Zhejiang province. It brought strong winds, heavy rain, flooding and widespread destruction.
This typhoon became the most powerful tropical cyclone to reach a metropolitan area since the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
When the typhoon made landfall, wind speeds at its center were about 163 km/h (101 mph), according to China's Central Meteorological Administration. The coastal area of Pudong was the first place where the storm showed its strength.
Both Shanghai airports, Pudong and Hongqiao, cancelled all flights on the previous evening. A decision on whether to resume operations will depend on changing weather conditions. The city has also temporarily suspended all expressways and restricted ferry services to nearby islands. Residents were banned from going out onto the famous Bund, which overlooks the skyscrapers of the Pudong district.
Authorities urged residents to stay in safe shelters, and the streets of one of the most crowded cities in the world were deserted.
The country's Central Meteorological Administration declared the highest level of danger due to a tropical cyclone. The Shanghai authorities evacuated about 400,000 people from potentially dangerous areas before its arrival, and hundreds of ships were ordered to take shelter in ports from the bad weather.
Earlier, Typhoon Bebinca hit the Philippines (the Philippine name for this typhoon is Ferdie), causing widespread flooding in many parts of the country. The province of Batanes was particularly hard hit, with thousands of households without power. Hundreds of houses, infrastructure facilities and agricultural lands were damaged or completely destroyed.
