Shaykh Abdur-Rahman describes certain factors the seeker of the path must adopt in order to develop his or her spirituality. This will enable them to come a step closer to the ultimate goal- acquiring the ‘nafs mutma'inna’. In order to achieve this goal one must undergo mujahada (exerting oneself contrary to the desires of their nafs). The nafs, the Shaykh mentions is like a wild stallion which must be tamed and only through exertion can it be bought under control. Ways are mentioned in which one can bring it into the correct obedience. Allah mentions in the Qur'an, “Those who strive in Our cause we will certainly guide them to our path."
