The October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas and other militant Islamist groups on Israel and the subsequent ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, marked by bloodshed, destruction, and famine, has polarized the world like no other armed conflict in recent history. Journalists covering the Israel-Hamas war are confronted with a completely new dimension of violence, misinformation, and propaganda. How can we discuss and report on Israel and the Palestinian territories without bias? To what extent are we able to portray the suffering on both sides and how do we ensure that differing voices are heard? Is this even possible when there is no free access for journalists into Gaza? Which solutions can media professionals use to unmask disinformation and manipulation?
As we discuss these issues, we will try to identify what we can learn from the current criticism of reporting to improve coverage of further conflicts in the future. Panel from the 2024 Global Media Forum in Bonn.
Speakers:
- Jaafar Abdul Karim, Moderator (Deutsche Welle)
- Barka Dutt, Founder-Editor of Mojo Story
- Nada Bashir, International correspondent for CNN
- Hazem Balousha, Journalist based in Gaza
- Shani Rozanes, Producer and analyst for DW

@@adlenechellali2419 look up the 1947 UN borders of Israel and Palestine. where the attacks took place, was not in occupied territory if it was in in Israel according to the original borders. I think that the whole situation is very comparable to Ireland, Northern Ireland and the IRA you can make a good argument that parts of Northern Ireland should be returned to the Republic of Ireland but the terrorism committed by the IRA terrorist group has completely sullied any chance for that happening anytime soon, and it makes discussion of the topic unsavoury.

Journalists trying to move the focus to what led to October 7 should perhaps mention that the so called "siege" or "occupation" of Gaza was also not the beginning of the story. Apart from that, the terror attack of October 7 is still ongoing. Hamas' rockets are targeting indiscriminately, and the hostages are still being held. Comparing death counts and the number of people suffering is a double standard too, when not counting in the huge difference between one party to a war making absolutely no efforts to avoid innocent casualties, not even claiming to do so, while the other at least claims trying their best to avoid innocent casualties while targeting combatants. Real journalism wouldn't report people's suffering without ever asking some uncomfortable questions, especially about whether those suffering are supporting the ongoing "resistance" by their regime, or whether they'd rather have them give up the hostages and lay down their weapons.

I tuned out after the nonsensical comment that 'it's not our job to determine if it's a genocide'. What arrant nonsense! It's been a textbook case of genocide from day one. Genocide scholars across the world have agreed on this. Moreover, it's curious how they conveniently ignore the report of Francesca Albanese (the Special Rapporteur for the OPT): "The Anatomy of a Genocide".

Israel has to defend their civilians and their country's future. Hamas with their constant attacks & stated goals, has finally become an existential threat for Israel. That's why they want it to be destroyed and if that requires unavoidable collateral damage to civilian lives, then so be it, they brought it on themselves. And the Hamas offensive being compared as the most deadly one post holocaust is laughable, hollow, if people fail to recognize the repeated provocation and offensive of israeli govt. against palestinians well before it and which probably started after murder of Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat.

This is a very important insight. The moment you are on one side or the other, you automatically defend your side and attack the other. Unfortunately, the German media enhance this very unhelpful group A versus group B thinking. This only enhances the conflict since group A feels unfairly neglected and group B still think its not enough and want more of the same. In the end, they lose both.

Excess of blah blah bha...and lack of: "There is no true MORAL responsibility for distortion or disproportion...Thus we may see terrorists heroized, or secret matters pertaining to the nation’s defense publicly revealed, or we may witness shameless intrusion into the privacy of well-known people according to the slogan “Everyone is entitled to know everything.” Blah blah blah. Too compassion and too much IN-competence: The press, too, of course, enjoys the widest freedom. But what use does it make of it?... What sort of responsibility does a journalist or a newspaper have to the readership or to history? If they have misled public opinion by inaccurate information or wrong conclusions, even if they have contributed to mistakes on a state level, do we know of any case of open regret voiced by the same journalist or the same newspaper? No; this would damage sales. A nation may be the worse for such a mistake, but the journalist always gets away with it. It is most likely that he will start writing the exact opposite to his previous statements with renewed aplomb. Because instant and credible information is required, it becomes necessary to resort to guesswork, rumors, and suppositions to fill in the voids, and none of them will ever be refuted; they settle into the readers’ memory. How many hasty, immature, superficial, and misleading judgments are expressed every day, confusing readers, and are then left hanging? The press can act the role of public opinion or miseducate it... (But this is a false slogan of a false era; far greater in value is the forfeited right of people not to know, not to have their divine souls stuffed with gossip, nonsense, vain talk. A person who works and leads a meaningful life has no need for this excessive and burdening flow of information.)...Hastiness and superficiality-these are the psychic diseases of the twentieth century and more than anywhere else this is manifested in the press. In-depth analysis of a problem is anathema to the press; it is contrary to its nature. The press merely picks out sensational formulas...Such as it is, however, the press has become the greatest power within the Western countries, exceeding that of the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary. Yet one would like to ask: According to what law has it been elected and to whom is it responsible? In the Communist East, a journalist is frankly appointed as a state official. But who has voted Western journalists into their positions of power, for how long a time, and with what prerogatives? There is yet another surprise for someone coming from the totalitarian East with its rigorously unified press: One discovers a common trend of preferences within the Western press as a whole (the spirit of the time), generally accepted patterns of judgment, and maybe common corporate interests, the sum effect being not competition but unification. Unrestrained freedom exists for the press, but not for the readership, because newspapers mostly transmit in a forceful and emphatic way those opinions which do not too openly contradict their own and that general trend. Without any censorship in the West, fashionable trends of thought and ideas are fastidiously separated from those that are not fashionable, and the latter, without ever being forbidden, have little chance of finding their way into periodicals or books or being heard in colleges. Your scholars are free in the legal sense, but they are hemmed in by the idols of the prevailing fad. There is no open violence, as in the East; however, a selection dictated by fashion and the need to accommodate mass standards frequently prevents the most independent-minded persons from contributing to public life and gives rise to dangerous herd instincts that block successful development. How can bias be avoided? Consider using more neutral language to describe events instead of emotionally charged terms like "terrorist attack." For example, you might say, "Members of Hamas entered a music festival held in Israel controlled territory with weapons; multiple participants died, and some were relocated to unknown locations in the Gaza Strip." It is not the media's responsibility to tell viewers which side represents terrorism or justice; viewers are capable to conduct their own research to determine which side they support.

I would have liked a more objective moderator. It's not only the right words. It's including words and background rather than omitting, downplaying and dismissing. Hamas massacred 1200, kidnapped 200 or so and says they will do it as many times as they can. In order to make sure that doesn't happen Israel has to destroy Hamas, the military infrastructure, weapons and fighters. That includes the 400+ miles, yes, miles of underground tunnels. Unless Hamas returns the hostages and surrenders. It could do that at any time to save lives. Wars are pretty awful, and now we get to see more distressing footage on our computers. John Spencer, an expert on urban warfare, says Israel is actually doing well at limiting casualties, especially since the strategy of Hamas is to put Gazans in harms way by doing things like putting fighters, weapons and command centers in schools, hospitals, mosques and homes. By fighting near civilians, diverting food, water and aid, etc. But that is often omitted. It's also not mentioned that Palestinians have rejected partition plans and 2 state solutions. They don't compromise, and then repeatedly resort to violence. There is plenty of evidence supporting the points I made. Israel has made peace with Eqypt and Jordan. It's moved people out of Sinai and Gaza. What have the Palestinians done to show they will live peacefully if Israel retreats? Where is the Palestinian peace language, gestures, and behavior? Where are the moderate leaders? Israel could do some things better, but let's not hold Israel to a standard that we don't hold any other country to.
