“Stop expecting us to send money home every single time. Money in Diaspora does not grow in trees, we are also struggling to make ends meet”
These are some of the words you will here in today’s conversation
Is it true, do we really take advantage of the people in Diaspora. Do they also feel superior to their families back home and where exactly do we draw the line?
Lynn Ngugi sat down with one of London’s business Mogul Lydia Tete Olet and Maridady Motors CEO Eric Ngigi for a brutally honest conversation on the truth behind life as a Kenyan in Diaspora, investing plans and how we can all have healthy interactions with each other

I think to me is not strange otherwise evn people in rural or ushaggis believes that those in cities especially Nairobi are gold dealers.. They keep on asking for money whereas live in cities especially Nairobi is not easy evn sometimes. If class advances to diaspora the more they expect. I think what we dnt know is bigger than us. People should renew their minds by thinking out of the box the comforting zone.
@janemwangi6932
@janemwangi6932 Год назад
Still it depends on how we represent ourselves when visiting home. Let's not show off by creating a certain class otherwise the more you create expectations in their minds.

I appreciate this conversation. Its not a Kenyan problem but Africa as a whole and other 3rd world countries. One question am always asked " Why is it that Africans work so hard,double and triple shifts but are always broke?" Sometimes its our own who let us down. One has to draw the line and hardened their heart if they want to make something out of their lives while abroad. Don't neglect your parents and siblings but draw healthy boundaries. Its sad when family members don't care about your wellbeing and the day you see " Hi my sister" the next thing is " Nna shida kiasi"..." Nimefungiwa nyumba"...etc There is a devil called "Credit Cards" - by the time you get to understand how they actually operate,you are deep in debt.

I have just returned back to Kenya after over 20 years abroad. I set the expectations right from the beginning. Only helped where there was a need and could afford to. When I visited tmy family and friend in Kenya, most of them were living a very good and comfortable life. I was intentional in focusing on my nuclear family and investing in Kenya. It has paid off and so glad to be back.

Funded myself to diaspora as an International student, life was expensive and difficult. Expensive tuition to pay, loans to repay,culture shock, zero social life, discrimination......Worked four jobs and still went to Uni full time, graduated top of my class. All this while, phonecalls were scarce but my phone would suddenly become busy, just as I was about to travel home. Bring me this, bring me that but when you're leaving Kenya, nobody buys you even a packet of tea bags as a travel back gift. Once when borrowed money, I genuinely said that I didn't have at the time and that's how I was shut out. Travelled home soon after, I was ignored na nikaongewa. Great eye opener, huge lesson learnt. As much as I understand the struggle people in the diaspora face with high expectations from relatives back home, I'm one of the few people who can say I do not send money back home. I do it by choice, which is maybe a surprise birthday gift once in maybe 4 years. Sometimes, never. I decided all my siblings should look after themselves the way I'm looking after myself. I made myself clear by actions, not words. My actions were never to send money to help people out of their problems because I knew it would never end. Having said that, I have no stress in that department, and I have been able to invest and buy my property here in Diaspora.

Good morning. I totally agree with Eric. Let's trust the professionals. While I was contracting my mum's house, I engaged a professional, true it is slightly expensive but the end product is phenomenal. I will recommend this young man anytime. At the moment he is running a project in Western Kenya for a diaspora client to the tune of 300million Kenya shillings and counting

I agree raising kids in the diaspora is a struggle. I was paying $10 an hour for a nanny compared to back home my relatives helped without expecting anything. My child experienced the love of a village for free. I love my Africa. Priceless! 💞💯

Yes, you can by first learning how to love yourself and to work on your low self-esteem and low sense of self-worth. If you work on these, then you will learn how to say NO. You should not waste your resources on others without considering yourself and your husband. You need to address these so that your next marriage will be successful. Above all, consider building a relationship with Jesus, Are you aware that Jesus Christ loves you very much and deeply cares about you and you need Him? Please consider inviting Jesus into your life as your Lord and personal Saviour♥️

Choose you. You have invested enough in them. Give strength and power to your own spirit. You will see how when you switch off your phone, their lives will go on without you. Tell them , "You are in recovery." And this time, ask them for money. Probably they will not offer anything, and will start avoiding you. Invest in yourself, please. When you thrive soon they will too. Love the others as you love yourself. Love yourself so you can love them.

Truth is finally out. We worship people who are in the diaspora we think they're better off we believe they're our economic saviours we see them like they are all gold coated..ngai. Life is more tough out there. Someone in Africa could be living better than someone in diaspora! Hard truth be told. There are greener pastures in Africa too. I appreciate all those in diaspora making it happen too.

Those who worship those in the diaspora are themselves not in their right minds. I think there are some in the diaspora/a select few, who go in their villages and hold themselves in a higher place than their villagers, friends, relatives. The truth is, we in the diaspora, I.e, Uganda, South Africa, Rwanda, Botswana, US, China, etc, as much as there are more opportunities out here, we are you and you’re us. We still bleed the same. We get hurt the same way. Personally,sijagongwa vile, and I have to admit that the schooling for my kids through college out here, has been a blessing more than if I would have been in Kenya, I have to appreciate. With that said, hapo kwa kutuma pesa, wacha tu. Sometimes when we come out here, given the circumstances we left back home, we tend to think that sending money, and more monies, is a way of getting them out of poverty/elevating them. We sympathize too much and not empathize and before we know it, we’re taken advantage of. I personally came to realize that it cannot be forever. I used to feel bad for everybody. My friends, family, nk. Over time, I learnt, and I drew those lines. I decided to take care of me and my immediate family! I realized that I can spread the love, more love by loving myself first, immensely!

11:40 I don’t think the people in the diaspora feel superior! Most of the people I know living the diaspora are stressed from the weight and pressure put on them to the point where they feel as though the people in their home country no longer are concerned about them beyond what they can provide. One of my co-workers was constantly depressed because of the pressure to provide! The more she gave, the more they wanted and oftentimes made her feel guilty and obligated to provide even for those outside of her family. Very sad!
