Thank you for stating what others neglect...humidity! I was in the PI for a wedding and wore a suit and tie to the 5 hour outdoor event. It gave new meaning to chestnuts roasting. Even when I wasn't in a suit the heat and humidity were too much in combination.
Uhmmm ... How did you come up with the 4th one? A middle class working family have fridges and microwaves. Some might not have a microwave since it's better to heat it up on the stove. May I suggest that you collect data as a whole? and don't base it just by living in Metro Manila. Because it's totally different from where I live. ❤️
Another struggle would be lack of public restrooms. There is a lack of serviceable restrooms in the Philippines. Often when traveling in the province, you would see people urinate or defecate on the side of the roads.
Part 2 is a good follow up. Will retire to Bacolod or Iloilo here. On my 4 trips to Bacolod I researched and experienced the city. I found everything from fresh milk to salami. hehe The local food places are good and they have 4 large hospitals. They also have western style restaurants and stores at the malls and food stores. Thanks for the video!!
Savvy Young Persona you are doing a superb job of explaining the trails and tribulations of Filipino life! Being married to a Filipino fine fellow for over 45 years and spending a lot of those years hanging in the PI ( BGC the best!) You totally illuminate the good, the bad, the annoying...but boy oh boy is there magic, beauty, beautiful flavors, glorious skies, exceptional talent in abundance... ah yes but the traffic is horrific and can set the blood to boil...used to warn the daughters to bring something to occupy themselves when maneuvering through city streets...read a Filipino blog that said Manila was not too far from being uninhabitable due to the traffic...Big fat ugh!! Applauding you from afar!
It took me 2 hours to get from Mactan airport to my hotel in downtown Cebu. The traffic is so slow on the bridge that guys sell snacks to people in traffic. My cab driver even bought some from the vendor and offered me to try it.
I had the same problem when I was in Cebu leaving from the airport. It took at least one hour to go from Mactan Airport to the Radisson Blu Hotel. I was only there for a day and one reason I stayed there was because of a mall just across the street. Had I known that it was going to take so long to get to the hotel I would have stayed near the airport. I guess that sometimes we learn the hard way but I was still happy where I stayed even if it took a while to get there.
Been watching some of your videos as of late, but seeing part 1 and 2 of the “Struggle” videos was quite cathartic to say the least. I lived in LA for all my life and moved here a few years ago. And I must say that everything you mentioned was basically spot on. It was so nice to hear someone else spell out the very things that I have either said to myself or to others. There have certainly been moments of struggle despite living here in BGC. Though I continue to try my best to keep things in perspective, there are just things about this country that don’t align with what I’m accustomed to. And while I’m shielded from the kind of socioeconomic disparities that so many have undergone and continue to endure, the extent of my displeasure hasn’t really let up. I’m someone who thinks deeply and at length about life and there’s so much to unpack as I move through this unique experience. I hope that as time bears on, I can better acclimate. Btw your videos are great, keep it up. 👍
I love your videos dude. You're a talented guy at putting across a message clearly. Did you and your family find it difficult to get a visa or did your background help you? . You mentioned being Philipino. Good luck for the rest of 2022 .
I live in a high rise in Makati. The condo I am renting do not have a stove/range/washer/dryer. So I bought a microwave oven, rice cooker, and electric grill and I either hand wash my clothes and dry them on a clothes liner on the balcony or I take them to the local cleaner.
Nobody talks about how it gets dark around 6pm everyday in the Philippines. That's something I would have to get used to. In Canada in June and July it doesn't get dark until around 9-10pm. For most of the year it gets dark well past 6pm except during the winter months.
In the subdivision where my wife and I have a house we have lots of neighbors but after 10pm everyone is supposed to stop with the karaoke and we're not supposed to have roosters. Thank God that we don't have to put up with those problems nor do we have the loud city traffic either. I like being in the province where we are located between Nuvali and Tagaytay. There are hospitals not too far away and the same with malls as well as grocery stores. All we have to do is leave the subdivision and get on Santa Rosa Tagaytay Road and usually within 20 minutes and we can be in either place. I can't complain other than saying that it takes a little longer to get to the beach like in Batangas but it's ok as it's nice to see the scenery.
Love your videos! You're pulling the thoughts right out of my head and words out of my mouth. We share the same experiences and opinions! No disrespect to people in the Philippines but in my opinion and experiences you're on point!
I don't think a 'perfect' place exists. Each one of us has different needs and wants, so, by hearing the bad and the good from different youtubers, we can all make our own decisions of what is important for us. Thanks you for giving people, as much info as you can, 'bad or good', as you see it by your own life experience. Keep up the good work and try to give info that others may not.
Would love to see a video on the challenges of obtaining an SRRV. I have visited the offices during visits, but the information still seems a little vague and I have heard of other expats having difficulties. I am not married to a Filipino so I do not have that advantage. 🙂
Good video. I saw you had mixed the person of one's word with the Asian concept of saving face. As you know here in the states many are not people of their word either. There, its impolite to say the word no and to save face by saying those phrases you mentioned. The concept of saving face may make for a good content video to get more of a clarification on the topic to include the law over civil liable as well.
Chickens are scavengers, so they will eat garbage and dead animals. It makes sense for everyone to have them, so people have eggs for food every day, even in the big cities.
Never heard of the microwave and fridge situation. I grew up in the Philippines till I was 18 and we always had these two appliances. Very interesting.....
Tuli, another awesome video. I learned to deal with more or more of the native lifestyle. I had sort of a hybrid lifestyle. l did miss some of the things in America, such as potable water and steady electric power. I have also seem a lot of crab mentality. I have seen several workers do things their own way even when that was not the way l wanted the job done. I remember asking a worker for a nipa roof to have the holes patched. The worker took off the entire roof which cost me more than five days of his salary salary and a lot more time to repair. Well things do happen. Needless to say that is only one example.
Back in Laguna Province in 2016 my GF's family did not have a microwave or fridge either. It's expensive for them to being paying electricity for a refrigerator.
Evan.... in reference to the traffic... I find the major reason for it is due to a couple factors, depending on where you are. Cities tend to create their own traffic bc a 2-3 lane avenue can turn into 5 lanes. Even tho the lane patterns are painted on the street, ppl tend to drive in the lane AND on the painted lines, creating mass chaos. Trikes and scooters tend to NOT have any laws of the road. Trikes are slow, which causes jam ups, and scooters just buzz around like flies at a picnic. Before you know it, you're surrounded on both sides of your car with scooters...like a Mad Max movie. These ppl tend to create major clogs.
It’s funny the part about the sounds. The roosters and karaoke. I work as a banker and sometimes we have to call our back office customer service department that’s in the Philippines and I’ll hear the roosters in the background because of the pandemic and employees working from home. After sharing the experience of those calls to my boss, she said the company can offer to relocate me to work in our overseas offices in BGC. How I ended up in your channel. Lol
Great points Even; I’m a 20 year veteran and spent a lot of time in the Philippines in the early 80s; for me it’ll be a joy to retire in Philippines and get out of the rat race
I traveled to St. John US Virgin Islands for 15 yrs, (A slow, laid back chill vibe lifestyle) BUT to live on that Island would cost for 1 month what I can live in the Phils for 6 month's That's why I plan to move there & Have NO interest in a City lifestyle in the Cebu or Manila Metro area. But rather a small 1-2 bedroom house close to the Beach (within 1-2miles) with a hammock & a stereo pumping out Bob Marley & Peter Tosh
Brother, one thing I’m used to is traffic lived in DC and Atlanta where I am now with both traffic and the worse humidity during the summer months 🥵😓. Just eat the rooster 🐔 Lol! Hilarious 😂. A person may get shot for committing such a thing! 😂. Way to go Evan…you keep us laughing and informed. 🇵🇭👍🏽✌🏽
It's hard to look at the poor children out in the street begging or selling gum (chicklettes), etc and how about the skinny stray dogs just wondering around... Roosters crowing early in the morning is ok but some will crow all day long. I heard they are hungry when they are noisy. As for karaokes, pinoys love to play it loud!!
Yep...Eat the rooster 😆Perfect solution...this was another good follow up video Evan, or part 2...great straight up chat putting into context for us all thanks Cheers 🍻
Could you do a video covering bacolod city. i met a girl online from there and we are planning to meet. well i am planning to go there and would it be ok to make something about that?
Wow, dude! I was actually impressed with how you 'most correctly' laid out the factors (and showed the mindsets) westerners need to take into account when deciding to move to the various Filipino locales! Right on!👍🏼 I was turned off by your opinion you expressed in one of your videos on the subject of 'vaccines', masks and being vaccinated - or not. 👎🏼 But that only dropped your excellent rating with me from 100% down to about 97.5% to 98% 👨🏽🏫 Always say it like it is from your perspective, regardless. Your channel is cool!
Do you sure I can eat all roosters a half of a mile around me? Roosters have magic ability to reappire. 😊 I heard them even on ferry between CDO and Cebu city.
Pls help. My australian bf is coming here to visit me and he plans to take me back to Australia with him to see his country as well. . Is this possible? Will you help us with regard to procedure? Thank you for your indulgence
Agreed. BGC or Makati is the best place to be. You can download my free guide on moving to BGC if you're curious - dedicated-inventor-8723.ck.page/50a886fbc8
First time on your channel. You seem to be on the fence about Dugamente. If you had to pick a side, good or bad, city or rural, more city or more provincial, what would your picks be?
The things i hate about the place I live here in my country are lack of cleanliness, some undesciplined people, and the fcking heat. It feels like I am born at the wrong place.
A lot of expats I see here are at the mall..overweight, unhealthy looking, sitting in a coffee shop alone staring at their cell.(phone) Im sure they love the heat and the transport system. I have a few close kano friends but I find most others have grating personalities and/or seem like dodgey weirdos. I doubt they would fit into any society. That's why they come to phils where they can get a little respect cause people here equate kano to money.
The traffic problems are largely an American expat problem. They have to have their large vehicles. It could get much worse, unless the depopulation plan starts paying off.
Hi Evan, So right after I left your video I accidentally clicked on a simple life in the Philippines and there's their large $40,000 or $50,000 vehicle.
Ha Ha!! Eat the roosters.. I may or may not have gone after a rooster with a slipper at 5am in the morning. Definitely different from the US. Hay Naku!
